I was in high school and college in the 80s. It was a great time for music and concerts. No cellphones, no internet and the shows were larger than life. They were general admission too, so you were free to move up towards the stage and closer to the band if you wanted to. Great times.

@PaulWildstar8 ай бұрын
Totally correct. No cellphones, just push button cord-ensnaring wall phones and definitely no internet for the public. You had to get your info from Cream Magazine, Rolling Stone, or Hit Parader. Most of the music scene's news would be three months old by the time a magazine hit the shelves. General Admission was the standard. High-priced premium seating hadn't arrived yet. KISW had Rising Star shows back then at $3 a ticket. Great times, indeed.

Technology ruined the the ability for average people to afford a concert unless they want to sit on a lawn a football field away from the stage and watch it on a big tv. lol It truly sucks. Heavy Metal kicked ass in the first half of the '80s(1980-84)... HEAVY & LOUD!!!!... because of Van Halen's 'Jump' marked the decline of that era of heavy metal... making it watered down...Van Halen being the first metal band to use synthesizers... keyboards... REALLY!?!... What about UFO...Thin Lizzy...Deep Purple...Uriah Heep... other bands for their day categorized as metal Styx...Night Ranger...Foreigner... Queen... Blue Oyster Cult used keyboards and/or synthesizers...Geoff Nichols contributed to Black Sabbath...no thanks to Van Halen from 1985 onward "heavy metal" became wimpy...but bands like Anthrax, Metallica, Megadeth, & Slayer ushered in a new era of metal...they are what Deep Purple, Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, & Uriah Heep were a decade earlier...hard rock, heavy rock, heavy metal, glam, punk...I liked it all...as the '80s passed along MTV metal was becoming a parody of itself...til Nirvana/grunge crushed it.

80s hair metal died because, by 1990, everyone was bored to fucking tears of it. It's that fucking simple. That and most of those bands were two dimensional parodies of themselves. Bands like Soundgarden and Alice in Chains were doing something that rocked way harder and seemed to have something interesting to say. They didn't come across like brain-dead fuckwits either, which set them apart from the likes of Faster Pussycat et al. Personally, I was glad to see the back of the spandex and hairspray crew. They sucked.

That kinda shit (especially hidden cameras recording your every fart, nosepick and jerk-off session) reached their absolute *pinnacle* in the '80s. People were just less aware of it. I'm 43 years old and pretty much every aspect of my life was recorded on camera, and I was just a little Canadian attempting to mind his own business and live his own little life. Fucked if every single tiny little thing I ever saw, smelled, or shit out wasn't recorded. What do you think it's like for anyone in their 40s or even 50s living in, say, Los Angeles CA? Rock had 40 years of dominance between 1956 and 1996. It isn't coming back. At least, if it does, it will sound very different from 80s rock. That being said, the intensity, rawness, and rebelliousness of metal and punk bands in the 80s and early 90s would need to be present for rock to have any chance of a comeback. You cant have whiny upper middle class emo kids bitching about first world problems or lame ass 40 year old nu metal musicians desperately trying to look and sound like rappers. Rock bands will need to be innovative and original and raw in the same way they were before the late 90s. Pay no mind to the flailing fucktard below me.

Pretty strange watching this from the 90's and honestly rock and metal still hasn't really come back from the 80's hey day. Really sucks when the weather gets nice and your out and about and all you hear from the cars is rap or country. I'm still a rock and metal guy so I blare it whenever I get a chance, just doesn't feel like it did when you were 17 and cruising.

Glam was never as bad, as the critics said it was. Grunge was never as good, as the critics said it was. They were just different. That's all. How are later grunge groups like Nickleback, Limp Bizkit or Creed demonstratively better art than Poison or Warrant? They're all about equal. Then, if you go back to early glam like Bowie, T Rex, the New York Dolls, Aerosmith and Van Halen, the critics and the audiences loved them just as much as critics and audiences loved Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, Beck and Alice in Chains. Innovators have enduring love.
@namedeplume20224 жыл бұрын
Nickelback, Limp Bizkit, and Creed are all Grunge? I don't think so. While Nickelback gets bad press, partially because Photograph is just sad, they put out good music. Warrant also put out good music. Nirvana, Alice in Chains, and Pearl Jam were all hit and miss on their albums. They put out good tunes and filler like everybody else.

Nickelback, Creed, and Limp Bizkit are NOT grunge. Limp Bizkit is Nu Metal, Nickelback and Creed are soft alternative rock (and that's putting it nicely)

I saw Wasp I think opening for either Iron Maiden or Ozzy, just saw Iron M. again b/c my friend won 2 tickets to concert in San Antonio, and I also saw Judas Priest not too long ago. Man, brings back memories plus they guys are still jamming at thier age, its fucking great. Keep those videos coming.

A lot of these musicians deserved what was coming to them and some did not. But what Lita Ford gets wrong, is that the 90s didn't forget 80s bands.they just forgot her mediocre rise to fame. Ozzy had no problem staying relevant. Metallica, Megadeth we're not taken down in the 90s. Iron maiden, Judas Priest... They never lost their relevancy.

Shyann1 lmao, then how about you explore the thriving underground scenes for a change instead of whining and complaining about how rock/metal as a whole is "dead" like a typical hair band zombie. Seriously, rock/metal is still alive and kicking and has never come close to dying; it's just not mainstream anymore, but back in the underground where it belongs. There's still a crap ton of kickass bands out there today; you just gotta dig through all that mainstream BS to find the real deal

I truly loved the 90s. Its was the birth of American Death Metal. It was a glorious time. I did go through the 80s bands like Kix, Cinderella, and Bullet Boys. That was about it. When grunge hit I was like "WTF is this???". Not a fan. I mean I guess I liked Alice and Chains. But that's it. I was as neck deep into Cannibal Corpse, Deicide, and Suffocation. OOOOOOOh such glorious times. I miss it very much.

@@ericv7720 We're you a Sinister fan?? I saw Sinister, Cynic, and Cannibal Corpse live at the Masquerade in Atlanta on Jan 3 1996 and drove right back down from Knoxville Tennessee the following weekend to see Goatwhore and Vader(Peter was EPIC) there,....then, I drove back down the very NEEEEXT weekend and saw Morbid Angel. Then,....the next year my whole band got to see Behemoth from backstage (pure insanity). The best 2 years of my life in terms of bucket list shows. Two bands I never got to see on my bucket list though,....were Death and Deicide. But, in 97,....my band was in the first actual "death metal" band to come out of Tennessee signed. The band Inner Self was second. Then eventually White Chapel much later. Now, even though it was on an Indy label, they still toured our asses off for 6 months and our lead singer literally abandoned us a rest stop just outside of Milwaukee. We were about to play the Milwaukee Metal Fest. We we're to share the 3rd stage with Origin and Chimera. Dwell Records was our label. They were a subsidiary label to Metal Blade. Back when labels used them to scout talent. We were pretty nasty live. Never got to do an album,....but Dwell did however paid us $1300 to do 3 completion CD's. Covers songs for Pantera, Death, and Sepultura. Our band was called Terminal Plan, and those tracks are on KZbin. Terrible production but we got the point across. Lol.

Without a doubt! Think about all the stuff one would hear on the radio back in the 80's. MOST of the music emanated from singer songwriters/musicians. It stayed like that for a little bit into the early to mid 90's, but then music on the radio got really simplistic and what is popular on the radio isn't even remotely close to that era. I love metal, but I also liked what was happening from a Top 40 perspective for the most part back in the 80's.

Thats because it was better ,music now days is unoriginal shit even metal today while i still like todays metal its not as good as it was in the 80s and early 90s stuff today is all about bpm and the music part is lost and all the bands all sound the same. Pop music has been ruined by american idol and autotune ,rap and country were never good and rock is practically gone.

It's not a problem with rock and roll . A problem with America. This music did vanish from the planet, just from America. We have a lot of problems. I certainly never stopped loving the music. I wore shorts and a t-shirt to every concert I ever went to no matter what. Orchestra, rock, blues, jazz. Just be yourself. That said, rock and roll is entertainment. It's got a visual and an audio component to it. Fashion is as much a part of rock and roll as the music is

@mbwfreedom Pyromania was "an okay album at best"? I disagree. It was not as good as High N Dry, but it certainly was a good album, as was Hysteria that followed. While it is obvious that losing Steve Clark brought changes to their music afterward, Def Leppard continues to put out good albums. They are no longer a heavy riff metal band, but bands tend to change over time.
