Well… Someone did do “In the Heights” before Lin. That musical was “RENT.” “In the Heights” uses RENT as a springboard. Both musicals are centered around a major holiday. Both have a character named Benny, who yearns for upward advancement, among other things. Both have a main character who isn’t directly part of the action (Mark vs Usnavi). Both have a character who keeps the community or family together (Angel vs Abuela Claudia). Both are meant to be for generation “now.” In Jonathan’s time, “RENT” was for the MTV generation. “In the Heights” is for us now.

Hard to say. He knows more about writing musicals now, so it might happen faster. But between the many other things he has been able to do now because he's famous, and the [waves hands around at the world right now] and the projects he's been doing to make the world less bad, it might take longer.

Something I don't see people talking about enough is: Lin plays Usnavi, who can't talk to girls and kind of represents him... and he likes Vanessa. AND LIN'S WIFE'S NAME IS VANESSA. AND THEY KNEW EACH OTHER WHEN THEY WERE YOUNG. LIKE, DUDE, HE REALLY WENT AND DID A BROADWAY SHOW WHERE HIS CHARACTER ENDED UP WITH A VANESSA. Imagine when they met up later.... what she must've thought, I've always wanted to know.
@victoriat79613 жыл бұрын
according to him it wasn’t on purpose (he said in a tweet that Vanessa from the musical was “born” in 1999 and him and ‘real’ Vanessa only started dating in 2005) but i saw an interview where he said they knew eachother in high school and that he was too shy to talk to her or something, so i wonder if it was subconscious (that he named the female lead Vanessa). but that’s just my theory lol it might just be a crazy coincidence.

This is one of the best and greatest things and one of the reasons why I love musicals (and other forms of art/media) so much. I never got a chance to grow up in Washington Heights, NY, but through this, it provides a glimpse into that life - something that I otherwise would not have been able to experience. re: "I can't believe no one else has done this yet" The most famous words said by people who end up becoming incredibly successful.

I wouldn't say that. Those of us who grew up in the 1980s were inundated with Andrew Lloyd Webber themes as they were the big ticket shows. Prior to that it was Westside Story. ALW brought Rock into theatre starting in the 1970s. There weren't many original musicals in the 1990s other than RENT. LMM isn't throwing shade, he's just saying it was an intimidating task and ambition to be in.
