Lin has seriously helped me connect to my Latino side so much that I get emotional thinking about it. I was born in Colombia and moved to the states at age 7. I’ve assimilated to American culture and I’ve forgotten where I come from and who I am. Representation matters so much. Seeing Latinos on a huge stage like this has ignited a pride in me that I had lost long ago. I don’t know how to word it, but I am so thankful and I am so proud. I hope he knows the impact he is making

It's so interesting hearing other people's stories. I was born in the States, moved to Puerto Rico when I was 5 for two years and then moved to Maryland when I was 6, and I've been here since. My parents raised me in a Puerto Rican household, and I was always proud of my culture, but I am very, very white. No matter how loud I was about my heritage, I grew up without the community, and I grew up with every person being shocked I'm Latina, and it hurt and confused me. I know where I belong and I am looking for the community every single day. I'm so happy hearing your story and how Lin has helped you ❤️ We all have our journeys that lead us back home. We find a way.

Same! My parents are from Colombia. My first language was Spanish, but once I started going to school I desperately wanted to be included, so I turned away from the culture and became very Americanized. Once I got out of high school 10 years ago, I reconnected and feel free. I am very proud to be latina!! I don't hide it, I embrace my Colombian roots 🇨🇴🇨🇴🇨🇴

I have no Latino roots that I know of but man, this film made me wish I did. Not in an "appropriate the culture" kind of way but in a "I love these people" kind of way. And for all of the above, Lin does such a wonderful job of taking archtypes and showing them through his personal lens. Most everyone has know that abuela--the woman who wasn't your grandmother in fact but certainly was in spirit. We've all had broken dreams and dreams we refuse to let go of even when they seem impossible. We all want better things for our kids. We all find ways to connect to others. If we're lucky, we have a place where we belong. And if we don't give up, we all find our island in the end. Lin takes all that common human experience and says "This is how it looks in my world." And that makes him brilliant. Human and brilliant. Can't wait to see what's next.
