What antenna would you recommend purchasing to upgrade from the stock antenna?@@GadgetTalk4U

There's no reason why MURS couldn't be expanded to 22 channels just like FRS. Those VHF business band frequencies are virtually abandoned. And while they're at it they need to increase the power to 5 watts.

One of the things that I did was set up a Zello Link to my MU-5 in different communities for safety meetings for community watch groups . It was a lot of trial and error on the setup ….. but works pretty well …. Being that many of the communities are far apart ….. anyone in the communities that want to join in or listen in ….. wether in or out of range of the radio system …. Can join in …. Wether through Zello on their phone or by direct MURS radio . I can even join in while I’m in another country …. Crude setup …. But works .

So, I purchased this radio because it doesn’t require a license. Now, what I’m trying to figure out is I know the 1-5 channels through Murs is licences free channels, now it also shows channels 6-20 are those license free channels also? I cannot find anywhere on this.

Hi, I think I address that at about 5:15 in the video. DIY channels. Cheers.

With dual monitoring, a GMRS radio monitoring a MURS channel could talk with a MURS radio that was dual monitoring a GMRS channel.

Interesting. You might run afoul of one-way broadcast restrictions, though.
@edgarhume8184 Жыл бұрын
Well, each radio is broadcasting on it's allowed frequency, and simply listening to another frequency, as is also allowed. Unless the intent of the law is specifically to prevent communication, and had nothing to do with maintaining order and quality of the radio bands.

I do like the platform, I own a GM-15. I thought about getting a UV13 Pro as well so I could do GMRS and MURS (before ultimately settling on the AR-830 for air band). I currently own an RB27V for legal MURS. Now if we can just get a certified GMRS/MURS combo radio,preferably based on the UV10 (NOT the 10R!) or UV13 Pro platform, I'd be happy to "keep it legal."

A fellow senior citizen "coffee pal" heard about this radio and asked me some questions, like I would know or something! Anyway here are his questions... 1) Does the dual VFO allow reception of both frequencies at the same time? 2) Does the radio scan, or do you manually have to go through the programmed frequencies?
@GadgetTalk4U8 ай бұрын
Thanks for watching and commenting. The answers to your questions are yes and yes. Dual watch allows monitoring both selected frequencies and you can scan the channels or a frequency range.

One question, does it allow you to talk on ham band? But with only two watts, it would not work very far. I am a Ham Operator is why I have this question.
@GadgetTalk4U4 ай бұрын
No. FCC certified Personal Radio Service radios like MURS or GMRS are locked to the service they are certified for.

So if I have understood this correctly, if I bought this and my friends who have Baofeng UV-5r’s would be able to communicate with me on this if they input the frequency I’m on in MURS?
@GadgetTalk4U2 жыл бұрын
To operate within the regulations, each radio service, MURS, GMRS, and CB, must use FCC certified radios that only transmit on their respective channels. Even newer ham radios are restricted to ham band transmissions. Listen, yes. Transmit, no - legally.
@Bootyhunter1971 Жыл бұрын
Yes they can. As long as idiots are blasting 10000 watts on cb channel 6 and the fcc ignores it, putting the murs frequencies on a baofeng isnt going to get their attention either.

Can MURS be used as crossband repeater?

I bought the Radioddity MU-5 over a year ago. I never programmed it for any other frequencies. I had some time on my hands so I imported all of the GMRS, UHF, and VHF repeaters into the 250 channel bank on the MU-5. Wow, I noticed that in scan mode I was picking up repeaters clear as a bell from 30-40 miles away. I’m just using the small rubber duck antenna that came with the radio. I’m in central Pennsylvania, only 400 feet above sea level with plenty of hills and forested land. I never heard transmissions 2 counties away on my dedicated Ham radios. This 30 dollar MURS radio has a receiver greater than most of the other radios. I now set it up as my scanning receiver. You won’t believe the sensitivity on this inexpensive radio. Does anyone know which Radioddity amateur radio is built on this same circuit design ?

Actually, the first MURS frequency is 151.820, not 825. Followed by 151.880, 151.940,154.570 and 154.600 Mhz respectively. Great video for beginners!

Why would you choose MURS over FRS?
@GadgetTalk4U2 жыл бұрын
They are quite similar. For me there are two reasons. First, MURS radios can have detachable antennas so you can mount it on a car, roof or mast. More height likely means more range. Also, MURS is currently a very quiet band. Little chance for interference with another users, especially since GMRS covers the same channels as FRS and is growing in popularity. For some, more users is a plus, so it kind of depends on the user.

Is the antenna any good?, or.. do you recommend replacing the stock antenna??
@GadgetTalk4U2 жыл бұрын
All these little OEM rubber duck antennas are quite similar. They're OK but not great. You might be able to find a MURS antenna tuned in the 154 - 158 MHz range that is marginally better. Work with your radio to see if it meets your needs before going with a third party antenna. It may not be worth the trouble or expense.
