What makes this a Passover song? Good question - we sing it at our Seder, so it MUST be a Passover song.
Who wrote the song? Good question, not sure - but Theodore Bikel made it famous.
Chag Sameach from Rabbi T & Rebbetzin Lea!
Yiddish lyrics:
Mu asapru mu adabru oyskho oyskho, yamdadadida
Ver ken zogn, ver ken redn, vos di eyns batayt
Eyner iz Got (גאָט), un Got iz eyner, un vayter keyner. Hey!
… vos di tsvey batayt?
Tsvey zeynen di liches (לוחות), un eyner iz dokh Got, un Got is eyner, un vayter keyner. Hey!
… vos di dray batayt?
Dray zeynen di oves (אבות)… Hey!
… vos di fir batayt?
Fir zeynen di imes (אמהות)… Hey!
… vos di finef bayayt?
Finf zenen di chamushim (חומשים)… Hey!
… vos di zeks batayt?
Zeks zenen di mishnayes (משניות)… Hey!
… vos di zibn batayt?
Zibn zenen di vochenteyg (וואָכנטייג)… Hey!
So what can I say, what can I tell you?
Who can say, who can tell what One means…
One is God, and God is One and there is no other - Hey!
… the meaning of Two?
Two are the Tablets of the Law…
… the meaning of Three?
Three are our Patriarchs…
… the meaning of Four?
Four are the Matriarchs…
… the meaning of Five?
Five are the five books of Chumash…
… the meaning of Six?
Six are the six books of Mishna…
… the meaning of Seven?
Seven are the weekdays,
Six are the six books of Mishna,
Five are the five books of Chumash,
Four are the Matriarchs,
Three are our Patriarchs,
Two are the Tablets of the Law,
One is God, and God is One, and there is no other - Hey!

o, very cool Logan. what came together to make this the first Seder year? you're almost guaranteed to hear the melody we snuck in at 1:13, which is the more popular Hebrew version of this less popular Yiddish one.

Hi Lea, my name is Jorge Frankon, from Buenos Aires, Argentina. I am very glad to "discover" you and Rabbi today, as I love the way you sing, dance and play. Maybe you can help me. I have in my mind a song that was sung in my family, may be in Iom Kippur, Rosh Hashana or Pesach. It was in Yiddish, surely brought by my grandparents from Poland, and I would love to have the lyrics for my children. Is there any way to send the music to you to see if you know this song? It would be great for the heritage I want to leave to my family. Thank you!

Who knows why it's a Pesakh song? You answered your own question by interspersing verses from "Ekhad mi yodea?" --long a beloved post-prandial seder tish-song. Why? Same reason the afikomen and the fir kashes are kid-centric: to keep children and the inner child in all of us all included and engaged. Now more than ever (turn off your device: Lift your voice and sing it twice!)

Wonderful! I've sung this song every year for 70 years. Glad to see you carrying on our traditions. I think before Bikel I heard it by Moishe Oysher. Since "mu asapru, mu adabru" is Aramaic (What shall I tell, what shall I say...), I assume it's very old. The next line puzzles me, and I'm hoping you can help. I think "oyskhu" is Yiddish pronunciation of Aramaic for "to you" (and "What shall I say to you?" works). But is "yumtarariya [the way I remember it] or "yumtarhiya" [yours] is a mystery. Is it just nonsense syllables? I saw one source that spelled it יום־טובֿ (yom-tov, okay) followed by ׳אַריִע but what is 'ariye or 'ariya --a contraction? for what?? The mark between the veys and the alef is an apostrophe, not a yud.
@LeaKalisch
@LeaKalisch 2 жыл бұрын
Hi there! You are very astute! Yes, Oysher has a version too, but we modeled ours after Bikel's. I think oyscho osycho yamdadidda is just musical gibberish. I too have seen it written in different ways, but that's what I think it's meant to be.
@OtisFan1

@@LeaKalisch Glad to be playing this again. I'm sending it out to my Yiddish Club. You really did capture Bikel's arrangement right down to the guitar, but with your own inventiveness to intersperse the Hebrew from the hagode. Keep up your great work. a freylekhn, zisn peysekh.
