One thing you forgot to mention: the design for the autocannon is specifically set up to work with two people. The bolt is on the outside of the weapon, away from where helldivers are trained to hold it but towards where the second person is. In order for a lone helldiver to pull the charging handle they have to reach around the weapon. Additionally, the shells don’t eject out the side like every other gun in the game. They eject out the back so as to not hit the loader.
@Outpost38CАй бұрын
It is for this reason that I’ve asked my friends over voice to pull the bolt on my ac if they’re also using one. It’s WAY easier to reload when you don’t have to pull the bolt yourself, and it’s way faster for them to do it too. It’s a shame that you have to be holding the backpack if you want to assist with reloads, you can’t just run up and help if someone’s struggling with their recoilless.
@VergilonastackoflawnchairsАй бұрын
Even though most bolt action rifles have the bolt on the right side, the autocannon's looks like it was designed for a right hand grip ergonomically speaking, so the diver could just palm up pull back the thing 'without' thinking and for ease/minor comfort
@Taolan8472Ай бұрын
Eh, that argument would hold more water if *nearly every single gun* didn't have their charging handle on the right-hand side of the gun.
@anteshellАй бұрын
@@Taolan8472 I guess you've never seen guns in real life. Unless they're ambidextrous, they almost always have the charging handle on the right. But the reason for it is entirely different than with the autocannon. With small arms, it is so you can keep the gun trained on the target with the left hand supporting it while doing one handed reload with your right hand. While this game's animations don't reflect that, the guns itself are based on that reality. However, with autocannons, that is not the case. That is not designed to be one man operable. It is very specifically designed for teamed operation and that is why the charging handle is also on the right. TLDR; The argument is still water tight and you only managed to puncture your brains.

Even the Expendable AT has one, where your character reaches for the back cover to make sure it's there, and additionally doesn't do that again if you re-check while not having fired it yet. I'm only a bit sad that they don't have first-person versions of doing that, as you need to aim to be in first person.

There was an old total conversion mod for UT99 that, while having blocky graphics compared to today's games, had all this and more. It was a tactical style game that was ahead of it's time in terms of milsim stuff. Also CoD4 had a lot of this too as well as the ArmA series and it's previous games. Also, I believe the safe arming distance for 40mm is something like 10 meters for low velocity rounds.
@GugureSuxАй бұрын
The sad thing is, we already had some of this stuff 20 years ago. Max Payne was praised for its moving slides and both empty mags and casings staying on the ground. Killing Floor and Red Orchestra, both mid-00s UT2k4 mods originally, had crazy amount of detail on the weapons and their animations, including those launcher grenades with a minimum safe distance. Crysis did that and the "+1 in the chamber" reloads. The sum of parts in HD2 is impressive, but both looks and tech-wise it's barely on par with some 10yo titles. It plays and looks like MGS5 for the most part, a 2015 game, yet requires ten times stronger hardware to run smooth.

I think about good example of a non military game with crazy attention to detail is Killing Floor 2. The developers also made the Rising Storm series, so all of the weapons have fantastic reload animations, but the real surprise is when "zed time" (slow motion) triggers. It immediately become apparent that the only way they could have created the firing animations is by watching slow motion footage of the guns actually firing. Not only do loose parts jiggle, but parts you assume to be solid flex under the recoil forces. Metal turns into rubber in slow motion, just as it should. It's incredible.

Not only are the weapons and playable characters so satisfyingly realistic, but the enemies. The destructible environments, the bugs, the bots. They all have individual parts and methods of deconstructing them. Bugs are weaker in the joints, even armored ones. The heads are vulnerable, but god help you if a Brood Commander goes berserk without their head because, newsflash, some bugs can live without a head for a pretty long while. You can destroy the arms of the Hulks. You can destroy parts of the Factory Strider and destroy the treads of the Shredder Tanks. Headshots give a satisfying fiery fizzle. Shooting with explosive or heavy impact weapons stun the enemy appropriately. I can't tell you how satisfying it is to hit an enemy and see them flinch, and how utterly terrifying it is when they don't. The way ships crash when you destroy them. The way bugs and bots fly when they are blown up. I can forgive the glitches and everything, because they're funny. But I can really appreciate the moving parts that function as intended. That's how you make a good ass game.

You can actually see your ship send in stratagems and ordnance. The fact that the SEAF artillery fires rounds in the order you put them in, things have weak spots and armor (so you're not just hitting a general hit box), and your character's stamina is affected by incline and even the substance you're walking on (note going through water and sand) - one could say they tried to pack in as much "realism" as they could in such a cinematic, balls-to-the-wall game. ngl, the tracer effect is kinda neat, but in good measure is pointless because you kinda will never actually see it, and if you do, you're probably paying more attention to the tracer than what you're trying to shoot at.

@code_renard Nah, some people will pick up on subtle things, even subconsciously. I always had a "feeling" I was almost out of ammo when playing, even without checking my hud. Sure I might be bragging right now, but I can honestly say I noticed those things when playing.
@elizabethhicks41812 ай бұрын
Once you get used to the cadence of certain fast firing guns, it’s actually very easy to note the tracers and reload when you see them start going out. If you react to them, usually by the time you’ve reacted, you’re on full empty without having to pull the trigger on an empty chamber. Even if you don’t perfectly empty the mag and leave two or three on the ground, you get that extra bullet in the chamber from reloading a partially empty mag
@LuigiVasku25 күн бұрын
So many little details in this game show how much care the developers put into it. Many players won't ever notice those details but they did it anyway!
@thegrimcritic54942 ай бұрын
Oh wow I thought I was seeing things whenever I noticed my bullets turning red as the mag went down to empty. You’re telling me that’s INTENDED?! Holy crap. It’s nice to see the devs actually put the effort into making the weapons act like the real thing rather than just in some random way like how the rounds cycle being fed into the barrel for firing etc most games don’t go as deep as this shows or how the ammo on the shotgun is visible decreasing after each shot etc it’s a small but nice touch imo

On one hand I'm very impressed. On the other, I hope this massive detailing work is not a primary priority of theirs when making weapons. Most of the people seeing this wouldn't even know these details were a thing if it weren't for videos like this. Even more people will stop caring about the details a short while after noticing them and the "Wow!"-factor has worn off.
@TheAbyssalStorm2 ай бұрын
The thing is, even if the “wow” factor wears off, if they put in less details it would make their quality less consistent, and trust me, people will notice.
@thebygoneking2 ай бұрын
Quality like this shows throughout the entirety of any game with this type of commitment. Left 4 Dead is another franchise where you can really feel that the small details elevated the game as a whole--and it becomes way more evident with games like Back 4 Blood absolutely sinking in a dumpster because of the lack of detail. Even if they don't notice this specifically, this kind of attention to detail is precipitated throughout the entire project.
@chuck7024Ай бұрын
Yeah, the "wow" factor for most guns is gone after you use them once. They always have their focus in the wrong place. Glaring bugs that have been there since day one, along with 90% of the weapon and support weapon pool being terrible. To add to that they released this expansion early and not only is it buggy as hell with every enemy phasing through walls, but it's very clearly unfinished and we were lied to about the maps.
@speckkatzeАй бұрын
@@chuck7024you do realize that different people at a game studio do different things, right? Anything shown in this video that doesnt affect gameplay was the work of an animator, who wouldnt be responsible for fixing bugs that aren’t specifically an animation going wrong.
