Samart's roundhouse is smooth and has proper form. Beautiful to look at. And it's not even his signature kick. That honor goes to his teep - the "Thai side kick". Legendary indeed

I think Samart's roundhouse is very underrated. It also played a very important role in his tactic. He used teps to upset the opponent's balance and anger him. While the roundhouse kick and boxing were used as the last shot weapon.

What we need to teach instead of saying " oh ALWAYS bend, or ALWAYS straight.. ALWAYS angle 45 degree upwards, 45 downwards, 90 degree to the side or ALWAYS lean back" etcerera, etcerera.. there are different kicks for every situation.. if you need to get over the guard then angle downward or if you need to angle upwards to get under a guard then do it. Bend if your leg slightly if hes too close or exend fully if u need to reach farther if you need to get your head out of range then lean back or lean to the side, if hes farther away then you dont need to lean back.. if you train properly u will kick hard enough regardless.. practice every style, every angle.. not every kick will be perfect technique.. especially in the midst of a fight, but more importantly find what works for you and learn how you can adapt to use it for any situation.. iv trained with strictly muay thai where the leg is bent and also with kick boxing mix martial arts which incorporated a straight leg.. and being kicked by both i will tell you both hurt enough.. power depends on whose kicking and how good their technique is regardless of how they kick..

I've been having a problem over the last year while trying to learn the Thai Roundhouse, and I think I've kind of fixed the problem but I'm here as hope to find confirmation if what I'm now doing is correct. Everytime someone taught me to kick with "everything straight everything fully extended" I would just extend and straighten my leg as far as I could and that would put my leg into hyper extension and I couldn't turn my hip over anymore. I started bending my knee just slightly, where it almost looks straight and everything's been much better. Even my upper body feels more loose as I move. So when they say straight/Fully extended, they still don't mean hyper extended right? Like there's a point of the knee where even as it's straight it looks a little bent? Or do they really want you to straight that leg completely, as far as you possibly can, almost like you're pulling your knee cap in until your leg is straight like a pole? I'm going to keep bending my knee just slightly because it feels better, I'm just curious if I had been misunderstanding what people mean by straight this whole time. Thank you to anyone who responds and helps me out with this.

Different people have different ways of kicking. This applies even among fighters. Learn all the ways and do what feels natural for you. I was taught both (straight leg and bent leg), I prefer to keep it a bit bent and straighten it right before impact. This helps me produce the most amount of power. You'll see ton of thai fighters with similar bend on their knees. I agree that supporting leg (the leg you are standing on) should be as straight as possible for mid and high kick, but sometimes due to anatomical restriction/flexibility in the hamstring and inner thigh/mobility at that hip, you end up bending it. The main focus is ideally turning your hip and shoulder over with pivoting. Everything else will fall into place.

They dont literally mean straight to the point of hyperextension on the knee. Its more terminology so that upon landing the kick your leg is fully extended and all the power is on the impact on the shin. Even in this demo Samart has his kick chambered at the knee right until he finishes the whip motion of the leg and knee hinges to straighten upon landing.

So... If you throw a high kick you can't lead back right? And when you throw it, should your shin go in a downword angle at the impact, an upward one (45*) or completly parallels to the ground ???
@TheSubieFan
@TheSubieFan 6 жыл бұрын
For most head kicks you will have to lean you can't get the angle otherwise atleast I can't and the impact should be parallel to the ground or down just not up pretty much never kick up.
@dt077
@dt077 6 жыл бұрын
No, you will lead back for a high kick if going to the head. For roundhouse to the body, it is ok not to lean back, but to kick very high, you need to lean back to open the hips.

I've seen videos where the rear leg is still very bent on impact and I mean like a 80 - 90 degree angle and now I've seen this video telling me that it should be straight on impact. Which one should I use?

There are many variations of the Muay Thai round kick. Different variations can be used for different aims and different situations.
@87mjung
@87mjung 6 жыл бұрын
There are many different style of kicking that can all be effective if implemented well. But all the powerful thai kickers I've watched always had at least the kicking leg completely straight on impact like a baseball bat. I mean you can test it yourself, take a bat that is slight curved or bent vs a straight bat and hit a tree or ball and see which goes further.

@dt077
@dt077 6 жыл бұрын
Some schools teach this, others do not. I was taught to bend the leg when kicking at medium and short range, but to keep it straight at long range. It's more power if not bent.
