I started Muay Thai as a Taekwondo practitioner, and a switch kick in Muay Thai is a lot difficult. I used to switch sliding my legs wider and it becomes even difficult to throw roundhouse kick Muay Thai style, any Taekwondo practitioners do that a lot. This video really gives me insight on how to do it correctly, it's perfectly well explained. Thanks coach!
@plexq
@plexq 3 жыл бұрын
This was super super helpful. I was getting some coaching today, and I realized several things from this video. I'm struggling with power because I'm switching feet okay, but leaving my left shoulder forward, and then it's all weird when I try to generate power, because my shoulder is already forward. Oh, and why is it forward, because my stance was too bladed, which, means when I switch, my whole upper body has to rotate way too much to do it effectively and quickly. Correct the over-bladed stance, pull the left shoulder back when I rotate, and kick like I'm in southpaw as you point out, and hey presto. Kick that has some power finally. Great stuff!

But you Sean are such a helpful person, I know it's coming from the right place and there will be genuine value adding content. You are such a great coach on video, I can only imagine how much more a person could benefit from training sessions in person. I appreciate your vision and your tutelage. Two things I learned early on about switch kicks.: 1. Switch your feet subtly. Don't do a big leg movement bc that's a big tell. 2. Throw the kick as soon as you switch your feet. Catch that rebound. My most common mistake was going too wide. Solved that problem. Now I am working on ensuring my shoulder is in the right place.

As a novice having switched from Bill Wallace style to Muay Thai style, this is incredibly useful. A game changer. In my first week this week, whilst training on the pads, my partner said 'move your feet!' whilst going through a punch and lead roundhouse drill. i had no idea what she was talking about ha ha. I've now studied it all weekend and taken it to the heavy bag in my garden. Just jab and switch kick. I thought i would NEVER feel good kicking with my weaker left side. Now...its actually coming together. When you drill stuff like this over and over...well, it doesn't matter that i'm 50 in december and came to martial arts very very late lol. It's sooo enjoyable

Great instruction! You're a teacher as much as you are an instructor and that is rare, at least in my opinion. My girlfriend and I just spent a month in Pattaya at the Fairtex camp. It was surprising to me how much better and different the thai round kick is in the place of it's origin. It made me realize that most thai guys here in the states are good, but nothing close to what we experienced at the camp. I think its american lifestyle and ego to be honest. We can't wait to go back. Hopefully 2 months next time so we can visit other camps.

A good exercise that I found in the book "The Art of Eight Limbs, The Science of Nine" is The Learning Pole, an exercise to work on body flow and twist for kicking. "Take a broomstick and place it over your shoulders keeping a tight grip of the ends. Start whilst in your guard stance twisting your body so you end up with the rear end of the pole pointing at the bag then reset yourself and go again building more speed each time, you should get to a point where your rear leg will start to drag around and lift off the floor, only then should you let your leg kick, let all of the twisting force be transferred down through the hips into the leg." Thanks for another great video 🙏🏻

Tips from me: ----------- You can disguise your stance switch for the switch kick by circling to your left (from orthodox stance; if you are in southpaw you must circle right). To the opponent it looks like you are circling out to reset, but you can momentarily switch stances "undetected" to throw the switch kick as they pivot to face you. They might step across with their lead foot, and you kick just as they set it down. Or they might drag their rear foot forward, and you kick before they put weight on the rear foot again. Important here is that circling the other way doesn't work to set up a switch kick. Your stance switch is telegraphed when circling in this direction. However you can just openly switch stances (to/from southpaw), circle the other way, and then disguise a second stance switch to throw a kick -- it ends up being a switch kick by definition only, as you will be back in your original stance throwing with your dominant leg. ----------- You can disguise your stance switch with a 1-2 that you know will cause the opponent to move backward. When you throw the right cross and see that you have connected or caused the target to retreat, switch stances and immediately throw the kick if there is an opening for it. The opponent can mistake your stance switch for you aggressively closing distance, so they won't see the kick coming until it is halfway there (or if you are lucky; not at all). ----------- Learn to fight well in both stances. Be able to kick hard with either leg without losing balance. I would argue that the first thing you should learn as a beginner is that you have four appendages to use as weapons, not three. From day one of training, you should be building up muscle memory and stamina/strength to fight with BOTH legs. (This will help your check kicks as well.) You can't throw a good switch kick if you can't fight in both stances. ----------- Know your range by heart. If you have to set up to kick, you'll almost never land a good one. Targets move around. You have to just fire off the kick the moment you see the opening; there is no time to delay. Know you range, and be fast. If your technique is good, the power will be there. Just be fast.

Great teaching man, always impressed by your cardio and the fact you can show the moves AND keep talking the whole time. I practice the noble art as an amateur, and want to learn how to kick. Never done it, feels pretty awkward, specially when shadow boxing, cause you don't know what to do with the leg after the rotation. Being left on one leg even for a second feels wrong. But I use your videos to learn Muay Thai basics, and my balance improves every day. That stance is still a pure mystery for me, my subconcious refuses to let me stay on my back leg, it's hard when you drilled so much to keep a regular boxing stance and low head movement. But having the other leg ready to go at any time and in any direction looks very dissuasive. Confined or not confined, you can learn stuff if you have the right teaching. Just discovered your channel and let me tell you, there is nothing else like it on the subject. Greatings from France !

Its really advisable to watch different channels when you want to learn something properly. I followed Shane Fazen's switch kick tutorial and fell short because he did not really explain properly what Sean Fagan explained at 02:46. Because in Shane's video although he said to switch your lead foot not too far back but he did not explain the leg directions to where you should be switching. Or if you do your lead hip and lead shoulder does go slightly back, in his video he barely moved both points when he kicked and it was awesome to look but when I followed it I kept wondering why my switch kick lacked that umph because my lead hip was at the same place all the time even when switching. I did follow his rear roundhouse kick tutorial and it did a lot of wonders for me. Both instructors are awesome and its hard to believe this is free content.

Awesome as usual. What about guarding the face with hand as opposed to driving hand down while kicking?

Huge fan brody. Your vids are much appreciated by myself and many others. Thank you for taking the time to make them. Been training for a month now, a couple trainers have told me my progression is quicker than most, the down side, i started late 37 now but in better shape than most 20 yr olds lol. I was a bodybuilder before so im naturally bulky lol. Suggestions on fighting weight? I walk around usually at 225, but i am 195 now.

I noticed when you were kicking you hit with the bag with majority of the foot, does it matter if I'm hitting with the foot or shin/

When I throw low kick and roundhouse I'm always afraid of injuring my ankle, this never happened to me, but a friend had an injury because of that. Which is the part of the shin that makes contact with the opponent, I think is the middle! but what if you are in long range? You kick with the instep or with the low part of the shin? What about the anderson silva broken shin?

I know what you meant..i asking the same question years ago before turning pro..my answer is kicking using your foot..the hard part, btw not recommend using shin cos i saw tons of vid on insta youtube etc, broke their shins when the opponent checks..

Don’t you want to raise up the left arm to load it at the same time as you do that first foot switch?

What do you think of Ernesto Hoost his defense bak in the day. I feel like people now forgot how he checked kicks (not pulling away but lifing his leg so oponent would hit his knee bone and immediatly kick back)

When u switch stances, do you still keep your right foot angled? Or do you face them towards your opponent before executing the kick?
@seanfagan
@seanfagan 4 жыл бұрын
There is no right or wrong way, whatever feels better for you. I typically have it slightly angled
