Sean, the part regarding the head movement absolutely rocks! Every time I go to gym with my colleagues - and 100% of them are boxers - they go: "YOUR HEAD MOVEMENT SUCKS!!! IT SHOULD FLY AROUND THE GYM LIKE A FLIPPIN MISSILE ON COCAINE!" I'm so fed up with their bullshit so I feel like kicking the shit outta their tiny little thighs next time we spar. Big thanks for finally explaining the difference between head movement in boxing and muay thai! Cheers from Ukraine!

Have them watch a head kick knock out compilation video. You will see a lot of head kicks come in from extreme head movements left or right. That exaggerated bob and weave in boxing will get you kicked or kneed in the face in MT. I had some boxing experience before MT and had to break that habit . A nice 25% power head kick on a slip or bob leaves a lasting impression when sparing .
@StarskyUA4 жыл бұрын
@@scottrichardson1014 yes, I agree! Boxing was my first martial art before MT and I experienced the same situation later in a MT sparring. Slamming your own head into someone's shin changes quite a lot, that's for sure!

I’ve been Kickboxing for about 4 years, and am a brown belt in K1 (yes, we grade!) and this still a super helpful video! We forget the importance of shadow boxing, and the importance of doing it correctly. Reality is, this is as close to sparring as you’re gonna get and is better than a heavy bag for working many techniques....so thanks for great reminders. I’d say number 4 is the most important. If you stand still you get hit. Simples. Anyone can move, so do it!

7 and 8 really hit home for me. Only about 2 months in and all the more seasoned students are always telling me to relax and breathe. I totally understand it logically but emotionally I'm like "You're trying to punch me in the face, it's hard to relax!" That and so much doesn't feel natural yet, so I feel like I have to focus so hard mentally that it's easy to tense up and not breathe right.

Excellent video Sean. Agreed with all of your points to varying degrees. However, I'd like to offer you some respectful thoughts: 1. On kick follow through. . There's no such thing as muscle memory - it's a misnomer. "You are simply building pathways between neurons so that particular actions come more readily when needed. Therefore, when you talk about kicking fully through and returning, kicking to 180, or kicking 360 you have to distinguish are you talking about drilling the TACTICAL mindset, or the physical motion? Kicking all the way through 360 is a way of training your body to maximise power and momentum. There's NO version of that, even to just 90 degrees that is TACTICALLY sound. You work on the assumption that in a fight the opponent's body will provide an obstacle that your leg will rebound off. If you are training your TACTICAL mindset, you should either neever go through; or return as quickly as possible, in which case, going to 180 is safer than going 360 and going 90 is safer than 180, and just using your leg and not turning fully at all is safer still. 2. On tensing. Agree with everything you said about not wasting your energy tensing, but I would say that you missed BY FAR the most important reason not to tense - speed. Your muscles work in pairs, each pulling in opposite directions - agonistic and antogonist. With a straight punch for instance, your bicep serves to pull your arm back, whilst your tricep sends it out. If you are tense, it's like trying to drive a car with the front and back wheels turning in opposite directions. You must first relax the bicep before the tricep can do its thing. 3. On breathing noise. This is a classic example of received wisdom that started as a training drill but can be counter productive if misunderstood. For starters, to make the noise, many people will open their mouths, which makes them more vulnerable to a broken jaw "muscle memory" remember - what you practice in training is what you do in a fight. Secondly, I believe that the most important reason to exhale during attack, is because it tenses your diaphragm making you less vulnerable to counterattack. So, exhale yes, but but noisily no, and with your mouth ajar, defintly no. Great to see you living your best life out there man. Really enjoyed your video. Reminded me of many vital points. One of the greatest challenges my beginners have is the pressure to use variety in their techniques. The most valuable one of your tips for me, was to mix in defensive techniques. Great advice. Stay safe.

The style that you practice doesn’t determine the power of the kicks. The person who practice the style is the one who determines the power of the kick. Awesome video, good job!

It's more of a technical application. Muay Thai kicks are usually more blunt impact and powerful from a functional standpoint. Other chambered kicks are more hidden or quicker but not as powerful.
@federicogonzalez80334 жыл бұрын
It definitely matters though. TKD or karate kicks don't put as much body into the kicks, which means two things, 1; faster kicks, and 2: more powerful kicks. There are situations where you prefer one nd others where you prefer the other, and the person who practices them definitely has huge effect on the power and speed of the kick, but the technique of the kick also determines power and speed.

I practice certain combos and use them in real situations and I guarantee they were more effective because I drilled it 10000 times like a robot until it became second nature. Drilling technique over and over again is arguably the most important aspect of my training

especially point 9 is really important. even if you feel like your shadowboxing becomes more basic when you vizualize, its still way more effective than to just flail your arms around in a 17 punch combo into shoeshine. of course those shadowboxing rounds where you throw volume into shoeshines are useful aswell, but its only good for building speed.

Love your videos Sean! Been following your videos. I love how technical you are. Are there any videos where you coach on changing levels and cutting angles?

A trick I learned is to imagine fighting yourself when you shadowbox. Start by picturing someone that looks and fights just like you then start thinking of ways of beating yourself. Then, when you get good at that, start changing up your shadowpartner to keep the experience feeling new. Make it taller, shorter, wider, thinner, try making it different each time you shadodwbox, you can even try changing it while your fighting. Soon you'll come up with so many different new tricks that you'll have something to use for any occasion! Good luck and Muay Thai!

Depends on what your kicking and the type of kick.sometimes you want a fast kick Like a jab.sometime you want power kick like a hook.so it's good to know both and be more versatile.
