Great to see! Nice looking aircraft. Still terrifying that certain vortex ring conditions can be entered that are non recoverable. But then, helicopters have been flying for many decades and mostky avoid this too. Tilt rotors certainly seem to have a big role to play in developing different technologies and offering alternatives to conventional airframes and helicopters. I can see a flying doctor service in certain remote parts of the world, perhaps utilising the high speed in and out to the scene, but able to land in restricted areas as with a much slower helicopter. What an amazing world we can make it if we try hard!

Awesome to see! But, the biggest risk that remains with this design is asymmetrical vortex ring state. Many a V22 met its demise through this. Not an aerodynamically solvable problem. Early warning systems probably has the best chance to mitigate this.

Probably the easiest solution would be flight computer programming. Basically the same sort of self preservation that an Airbus would do should the need arise. How exactly to do that? Well, I'll admit, not my area of expertise but it seems like the easiest way to counter it.

As a former AW employee this always seemed to be an Italian vanity project, taken over after Bell pulled out - so, so complex mechanically, super-expensive to build, maintain and fly and only a minimal load-carrying capability; in fact, a solution looking for a problem!

One prototype has crashed. Killing two people. They reduced the vertical tail area causing instability at high speeds. It dutch rolled so much the props hit and shreaded the wing. Warning signs showed up on a previous flight but no fix was implimented. The version shown in this video obviously has the reduced vertical tail area as well. It also has no rudder so no redundancy there. I love VTOL aircraft but I ain't getting in this one.

@@MUCSpotter In my thought, most of the tilted rotors designs more suitable to the civilian use than the military especially "no no" in combat role. Due to the cost of development, the civilian section can't afford the tilted rotor on its own. That huge budget naturally only allocated by the government to the militaries and that the reason the civilian tilted rotor couldn' t go ahead of the military one that it piggybacking. For example, why wasn't the modern fixed engine pods design like in V280 be developed and applied to the AW609 first?
@johnpearson492 Жыл бұрын
It's very close to type certification. This being a new type of aircraft in the FAA view, they have had to work extensively to create a new tilt rotor class of aircraft. The new class takes inspiration from parts 23, 27 and 29 portions of the certification code.

Although probably no safer than a helicopter in vertical lift scenarios when something malfunctions, if there’s a mishap during horizontal flight, this is a much more survivable aircraft. It can glide somewhat or even fly to relative safety depending on the situation. Helicopters, on the other hand, have been a death trap for so many poor souls, even right up to now. I feel like I read about another helicopter crash every few months. If anything goes wrong in a helicopter, it’s falling like a spinning brick while the pilots fight in vain to put it into the theoretical autorotation they were promised in flight school. Multirotor craft are the future…at least until we’re allowed to know about antigravity tech. 🕵️♂️
