Those you just remove. Nothing is different or exposed when removed. My fronts are off but I don't need any other pieces put back to secure trim. The rear needs that kit to secure the bumper cover and wheel liner.

Thank you. I love your mindset and I was going to do the same. These were used and gifted to me. On the cutting note I did that to a friend's car 2 weeks ago. Removed them cut them with a variety of tools. It was time consuming to get it to look good plus it isn't super easy to cut through. Doable but it is a toss up of time vs money in my opinion for this one. You got to spend one of them.

How does it save the rear end of the vehicle?

When climbing down off of rocks or dropping in to a crevas the mud flap can catch and rip the rear bumper loose. It attaches to the bumper with screws and rivets on the 4runner. Other cars it may not matter.
