Water turtles can be really interesting pets, but many get fairly large and require more space than most people want to offer. Mud, musk, and stinkpot turtles (genus Sternotherus) might just be the perfect pet turtles for people who love turtles, but need something that stays a reasonable size.

Clint's Reptiles is excited to announce that we have taken your advice and created a Patreon account: www.patreon.com/clintsreptiles Sorry it took us so long, but we wanted to get it right and make it worth it for you. What do you think of the features we have offered? What other features would you like to see in the future? Clint's Reptiles has been a fantastic hobby for us to this point, but I'm at a point where I'm making major career decisions, and I would love to make this channel a bigger part of my life and the lives of my team. Patreon might just make that possible for us. It would open the door to new and better content in the future, and ensure that Clint's Reptiles stays around for years to come. Thank you to all of you who suggested it to us. I am humbled that you would even show an interest in supporting us as creators and educators. We love you guys. You have already been the greatest support we could ever ask for. Your comments have given us a reason to keep going since the very beginning. Who would believe how far we've come because of you? Thank you so much!

My brother has a Razorback Musk turtle and I can attest. They are the perfect pet turtle. Easy to clean up after. No real hassle when you compare them to larger and more common turtles too. Combined with being a bio active fish tank full of plants, guppies, corydotas, and pictus catfish there is hardly any mess.

I'm not sure if you corrected this somewhere, but goldfish and rosy red minnows and many other "feeder fish" are high in thiaminase, not thiamine. Thiaminase breaks down thiamine/vitamin B1 and can cause many health issues. Also, stinkpot is just another name for the eastern musk turtle (Sternotherus odoratus).

I was going to be given 2 RES hatchlings, and went on the hunt for proper care info and you and The Turtle Girl popped up. She even mentioned you for research care in one. I talked my friend into releasing them back into the creek where she rescued them from being stuck. She had only had them for a couple of weeks. And when she released them, they were so happy!!! I absolutely love your channel, and the "bloopers" at the end are hilarious! Thank you for showing those!! And thanks for all the information. I know you very quickly said which was which type of turtle, but would you mind please, telling me again? I am wanting a turtle, a small one!, and one that doesn't require an 80 gallon tank. So I'm really doing my best to research everything so we can start slowing buying every thing we need. Oh, and do they require a friend or best to only have one per tank?

Before my mud turtle I only had experience with RESs, got a mud and he scared the tobacco juice out of me when his head shot out and swung back at my hand. They swing out far! I’d keep guppies/mosquito fish, ghost shrimp, and freshwater crab. I’d pull off the males large claw and leave the small one so they can still eat stuff. My mud ate all of them!

My GF just caught a wild eastern mud turtle, At first I thought it was a three toed box turtle because mud turtles have a flanged plastron just like box turtles but they cant close their shells all the way up like a box turtle which is something I realized a few days later. Most mud turtles ive handled in the past were on the spunky and fiery side kicking and head lunging but this one is really shy but curious, hiding with just its eye's exposed and watching everyone and everything.

Hey Clint, thank you for such a great video. I have a question. Few weeks ago I saved 2 musk turtles, they are already adults but I have no idea how old they are. Any ideas how old they can be ?

Somewhere between five and fifty is probably a safe bet.

Get a large enough tank (45 gal+), a fluval canister 3-400 series, Reptomin, a turtle ramp (I have never seen mine use it though), heater. For 10 years, I have never seen my turtle use the basking light or basking spot. It's definitely the easiest pet to keep period. No bugs, no smell, no hassle.

I find stinkpots and razor bask musk turtles basking fairly often in the wild (less so the eastern muds or yellow muds). They're very shy baskers; for wild ones I tend to need to be on the opposite side of a stream, or on a bridge looking down into a body of water. And they don't really come all the way out like sliders or cooters do most of the time. They'll be on a submerged log with most of their body *just barely* underwater with maybe the top of the shell and their noses poking out.

I've been confused about a few things I commonly read in turtle care guides. I have a musk turtle, Sternotherus odoratus. I read that you should not to put small pieces of gravel in the tank because the turtle might eat it and die. This doesn't make sense to me because wild ones would obviously be surrounded by many things they could swallow. So unless a turtle has Pica I have a hard time believing this would be a common issue. Is there any truth to it? Secondly, I do provide my turtle with a UVA/UVB light, but I have read that commercial turtle foods provide the necessary calcium, vitamin D, and other nutrition that they normally could only develop/metabolize through UV exposure. Is that true? Lastly, how important is a heater? I read that Sternotherus odoratus, for example, has a native range from southern Canada down to texas. Obviously, that would mean their natural habitat includes cold water - particularly in winter. So is heated water always necessary? Any clarity would be appreciated! Thanks. :)

In my honest opinion, musk turtles are one of the more aggressive turtles especially the males though this can vary for each individual turtle. Musks and other similar species make great pets (very small size), but should be kept primarly alone because of their carnivorous and aggressive nature. You can risk it and house more than one together or mixing the tank mates up, but just make sure to have an extra tank in case things go sour.

These guys are adorable! I've always wanted a turtle or a tortoise but I never felt responsible enough to take care of them for their entire lives. Especially with some some tortoises living a hundred years or more. What are the life spans on these little guys? And are you able to cohabitate them?

Hi Clint's Reptiles my name is Victoria Peters. I know this has nothing to do with this video but didn't know if you'd see comments from older videos and really need some expert opinions. I am new to the snake world and had a question for you about ball pythons in specific. I am getting a 24x18x24 terrarium for a ball python bio active setup. Can I use the LARGE zoo med under the tank heater on the side of the terrarium as a primary heat source? I read on the directions you could mount it on the side especially with a bio active setup because the substrate is so deep and has air pockets from springtails and isopods. Could I use that alone or do you recommend I use something like a heat emitter as a secondary heat source? I would be using a herpstat2 thermostat to monitor the heat devices. And we do keep our house on the cooler side. Hope to hear from you soon thankyou for all the RAD amazing content.
