@@ericculver115 I just bought a few level 5 tools for my first drywall job, and I'm still making a lot of profit, and its for a friend giving him a good deal. I could buy this and still break even, and have it for future jobs. Im a big believer in investing in the right tools.

For me doing just general repairs in my one rental I have And I do some stuff for my dad Would love to buy these tools but Not in my price budget. I guess if I was younger me being 56 now I would do more work for people but I'm to old. I have friends always wanting me to body work and drywall flooring. But with bad knees and other problems I can't do it anymore. My brother asked me to help shingle his garage i told him I can't do that any more.

I’ve used a bunch of different brands (not Level 5), and there honestly isn’t much difference in quality between the brands. They’re all aluminum boxes with a steel blade and small rubber wheels. The blade needs to be changed over time. The most important investment is your pump, and you need to learn to mix the mud to proper consistency. It must be pretty wet. In Canada, CGC Machine Mud is the best.

If this was used to fill the gaps between drywall sheets after batten strips are removed, would the mud sink in as it drys? Would it need a second coat?

The tools I ran a lot when younger were the Ames tools. My dad always rented them. I've run a few other brands but not enough to know them well, but as you can see here, I have the Level 5 box and handle, and I think it works great. I would certainly buy a full set of them if I was doing production work. Hope that helps some. If you do decide to buy, I hope you'll consider coming to this comment, or video, and use my link. I earn a measly 3% but it truly helps and adds up, and doesn't cost you any more. Thanks either way. Guy Here's the link to the Level 5 tools on Amazon- amzn.to/3eUdjQB

Is this tool useable to skim coat over heavily painted popcorn ceilings? The popcorn is stuck on there pretty tight. Also, can it be used for skim coating popcorn in general that isnt painted? I’m a retired masonry contractor and have lots of trowel experience in concrete, terrazzo, and plaster. But at my age, attacking all the ceilings in the house we’re selling will be a chore. So I’m considering if this unit can help. The other alternative is to hire a good contractor,.. but if I can do it with this unit, I’d be game. Thanks for all your work! I really enjoy your videos and how well you explain everything. 👍🏼

I’ve done all the walls in the house,including the texture... but I know ceilings are a challenge. I know I could skim coat it by hand, but my back and neck wouldnt be happy after a couple of days-lol. I’m not in a hurry either, so if I did it by hand I could stage it out. But if this machine can help... it would be worth the cost.
@ThatKiltedGuyDIY
@ThatKiltedGuyDIY 4 жыл бұрын
I wouldn't try it. The reason is if you pick up one piece of popcorn, you'll get a deep scratch in it, probably like a dry chunk of plaster when smoothing out, but the blade on this will just drag that piece and not bury it, leaving terrible scratches. Now imagine a dozen chunks of popcorn getting in the box.... Another option is to roll the mud on with an 18" roller, or 9", using as thick of a mud as you can, and then smooth it out with the skimming blade in this video- kzbin.info/www/bejne/r6O8pHp7fr2Cf8k I'm doing that in a video on a job I'm on now, but it will be a few weeks before I release it, and I'm going over old stomp texture and my repairs, so it doesn't have to be as thick. Problem with this method is it might take 2 coats.
@Rikkcas
@Rikkcas 4 жыл бұрын
That Kilted Guy DIY Home Improvement -thanks! I kinda of had a hunch that would happen with the blade. The heavy nap roller is probably doable. I’ve done that on walls already and it came out well. It will just go on thicker to cover. Is all purpose mud or topping compound better? I used all purpose on the walls, slightly thinned out. But I understand the ‘stick to the ceiling’/thickness part. 2 coats is doable too. I dont mind if it takes me longer. Everything will get well covered with plastic film or builders paper, so any splatter shouldn’t be an issue. I’ll be finishing up with Crown moulding all thru the house after the ceilings. The rest of the house is pretty custom, with lots of details I fabricated/cast myself. I should have had someone take the popcorn out 20 years ago... my bad. The disposal cost was pretty expensive. I just painted over them because they have asbestos. 🤦🏽‍♂️ We’re moving to our mountain property and selling this house next year, so I have lots of time. I’ll look at that video. I really appreciate your advice! I have other work I’m doing here first, so the ceiling may be later on. That other video might be out by then. At 71, I still take the slow and steady pace-haha. 👊🏼

Regular All Purpose is to thin. Topping doesn’t have much glue and might not stick well. I’d go with USG Plus 3, and add a tablespoon of wood glue per box.

There's got to be a cheaper generic version of that. Does anyone know of one?
@ThatKiltedGuyDIY
@ThatKiltedGuyDIY 3 жыл бұрын
I'm betting you won't find one much cheaper, but I'm curious if anyone knows of one. These are expensive but with the time they save, they are truly worth it if you get good and used them fairly often. Now you can pick them up used for less, but you may have to tune them, replace parts etc. Mine is used, but it was in great shape when I bought it.

Look up 'Platinum' brand on Amazon. I bought a 10" mud box and used it with a level 5 handle I already had. Cheaper. Faster. Worked ok for me. Big upgrade since I've always done it by hand. So, I have nothing to compare it to.
