When I worked for CSX MoW in the mid 90s, NS MoW was the gold standard. Everywhere their lines crossed ours (this was in central VA), my guys would marvel at how beautiful their RoW looked and ask me why ours couldn’t look like theirs … no mud, pumping, weeds, tree limbs, fouled ditches, etc. Their ballast shoulders looked like they had been profiled with a laser. What a difference 25 years makes. How the mighty have fallen.
@PrenticeBoy1688 Жыл бұрын
Ironically, I live about 30mi from East Palestine, but the now-seldom used NS line about 10mi to my east is really, really well maintained. The NS line nearest my home just had a trestle replaced, although that line gets a little more squirrelly farther west due to flooding a few years ago. CSX sees a lot heavier traffic and their line might not look as well manicured, but it's probably kept in good functional condition.

As for washouts, that was the cause of a Canadian Pacific train derailment that happened in Rockwood, ME just a few days ago. All three locomotives on the head end of the train derailed along with several lumber cars behind them. The locomotives caught fire and the train crew made it out safely. One of the locomotives from the images I saw was CP #7005, but I don't know the numbers of the other two locomotives at the head end of the train. It has been said that the track washout was caused by the spring thaw, causing water to build up. The train crew was reported as saying that they saw the washout as they were approaching it, but there was nothing they could do to avoid it.

I suppose they'll wait until things dry out before the clean-up. I wonder what they would do if it's a swampy area that doesn't dry out. It must be much more challenging. On a related note, there was a derailment in a mountainous area (the Rockies?) several weeks ago where a derailment occurred with a "cliff" on one side and a creek below the grade on the other. Also, it was reported that a few cars were derailed in the nearby tunnel. I have no idea how something like that could be cleaned up. Does anyone know how it would be done?
@danielcobbins8861 Жыл бұрын
As for derailments inside tunnels, the cars and locos have to be dragged out by cranes, or some other means, possibly locomotives.

The good part is that the NTSB won't have to investigate this. Anyone familiar with current railroad operating practices, will know what the cause was. So if there's any RR executives looking at this video, then you better pay attention and fast. The world is watching and half of those that are watching, already know what the problem is.
