Using WD-40 as a fish attractant was first discovered by winter steelhead fishermen who used WD-40 to keep their reels from freezing. The WD-40 got onto their hands and transfered on to the baits they were using. Catch rates went up. It takes very little WD-40 on a bait to stimulate a fish to bite. Walleye fishermen on Lake Erie had success with it, too. As far as pollution goes you 2 stroke outboard puts far more oil into the water.

It works depending on your area. Up here in Virginia lots of people use it on the James river for flatheads. They spray a little bit inside of a dead chub then hook it through the gut cavity. My cousin and 3 of his friends were using wd-40 in the same place and in 2 other spots and they came away with 17 fish total in one day

50 years ago, an old timer told me to wash my hands anytime I gassed up the boat or lantern, and I found out by touching the bait after touching petroleum, it stops the fish from biting. I sprayed my rusty baits with WD-40 once and it effectively stopped any hits, I dipped them in bait scent the rest of the trip, and fishing picked up, I hung all my baits in the dishwasher when I got home (much to my wife's dismay), and sprayed my reels off with starting fluid then applied a light coat of fish attractant. Oil and water don't mix, especially fishing water.

This was made to discourage the use of pollutants? How ridiculous! Any petroleum product in any quantity in any body of water is a negative. I am a keen fisherman with a healthy respect for the environment without being an enviro-freak. The waters and fish stocks are not promised for tomorrow. Even in my short life ( I am 51) I have seen good fishing grounds fished out, by amateur anglers with no respect for the environment. Far better to use natural baits and respect bag limits so we can go fishing tomorrow.

antonio betancourt There is no fish oil in WD 40 Here are the ingredients.51% Stoddard solvent (In 1953 this was the predominant cleaning fluid used by dry cleaners.) 25% liquefied petroleum gas (presumably as a propellant; carbon dioxide is now used instead to reduce WD-40's considerable flammability) 15+% mineral oil (light lubricating oil) 10-% inert ingredients

Take a can of liver flavored dog food. Dent in the sides so you can tie a rope around it with no worries of it coming off. Take the old style can openers (triangle shape on the end) and poke a few SMALL holes around the top of the can. Toss it out and go home. Come back 2 days later and pull in the rope with the can and cast liver out on a hook to the same area the can was in. You will nail catfish and bullhead all evening long.

Well my friend lastdollarfilms back in the 80's we were just kids and didn't know any better like we do today. Yes, it's toxic just like the shelf food that's probably sitting in your cabinets that you fix almost every night for dinner or the diet cola that you drink. Don't most of the river's that flow here in the United States flood out because of the run off coming from most roads...just think about all the motor oil, anti-freeze etc that pollute the rivers as well? I really don't think a little bit of a water based formula would do much harm as run off rain would. Think about it my friend and have damn fine day! ;)
@ronpearlmann775510 жыл бұрын
lastdollarfilms I guess you aren't aware of the fact, or don't want admit, that for decades, 2-stroke outboard engines leaked ton's of oil and gasoline through their exhaust systems, into rivers and lakes, with no apparent danger to the waters, or the people who ate fish from them... Do you really believe that a quick spritz of W.D 40 on a thumbnail-sized sponge is going to cause more damage, or are you just spewing some of that wild, exaggerated environmentalist propaganda?
@lastdollarfilms10 жыл бұрын
The fish swims in a lake at a distance from a gas/oil leaking engine and by the time it gets to them its diluted. Feeding the crap to the fish is a little different so yeah there is a difference.

lastdollarfilms According to every biological study I've read, the only way that the flesh of a fish is likely to be contaminated, is through long term immersion or ingestion; even so, most fish who come from heavily polluted waters, are adjudged to be safe to consume in limited quantities, which is determined on a parts-per-million basis... I have never used this product for this particular application, but would have absolutely no qualms about do so, or consuming a fish caught with it...

I'm glad you dispelled the stupid myth people have my friend. Frankly, I think it is unconscionable anyone would intentionally throw something toxic into the water just to catch fish when there are so many safe, natural methods to do so effectively. Even if WD40 works I don't like the idea of people using the product in the water simply because if enough people do so the water will be polluted because there are a lot of people out there in the world and a lot of them fish regularly. Once the water is polluted the fish will be toxic and the people who eat these fish could get cancer and other diseases, which in effect destroys the very thing that sustains them and enriches their lives in so many ways.

I can see why there are downvotes, but the little bit of wd40 he uses would never be enough to harm almost anything at all... The water would instantly dilute it to basically non-existence..

I think WD-40 is much less of a problem than the Billions of pieces of plastic trash and aluminum cans.

Illegal as hell here in AZ. You seriously don't want to get caught with that in your tackle box here.
@Jackle619 жыл бұрын
This could have been done in five minutes. We don't need to see how to cut a piece of sponge. Keyword,,,, editing. If you saturate the sponge you are using a whole lot more WD than if you just spray a bait. Maybe too much is bad. You should have set some control yoyo's with baits you would normally use. Maybe they just weren't biting.

Ever try Ivory Soap bars? My grandpa swore by it. They were poor offspring of pioneers in Illinois. They actually cut pieces off and baited hooks on trot lines and bush poles. My brother also used it as the sole attractant in long hoop traps on the Wabash River.

Outrageous FishOutOfWater just because it can catch a fish doesn’t mean it “attracts them” any better than anything else. Whole point of the video is stating that there are better methods that don’t hurt the environment.

FYI...It carries the scent of the "bait" further, thus increasing the area the bait oil/scent which may or may not increase overall chances of production...(mineral oil, olive oil, etc would do the same, decades ago wd40 was dirt cheap, hence widely used.) That's why NOW there is spray bait stuff on the market.
@Askeyb20115 жыл бұрын
Heard here in Oregon it is illegal to spray your lures or bait with WD-40. I have used WD-40 to clean my Steelhead plugs after using Gel Scent. The gel is hard to get off but WD-40 cleans it right off. I would clean my plugs after we took out and whip them with a cloth and put them back in the box. We were hooking Steelhead, when they were there, just about every day. I have since stopped using WD-40 when told it is considered polluting. I use the original Lemon Joy to wash all my tackle even my rod, reel and line on the reel to remove any bad smells that could of gotten on them.
