Hey Luke long time no see! Long comment incoming.😂 Fantastic review as always mate, the original animated classic is probably my favourite Disney animation film and even though the remake is a blindingly obvious cash grab I still enjoyed it. So i'm tentatively looking forward to seeing this at the weekend. The CGI animals look a lot more expressive and at least its an original story this time around and not an adaptation of the straight to DVD movies they did. I wish Barry Jenkins had a couple more projects under his belt before he tackled this huge blockbuster as he tells original stories in this increasingly IP dominant film landscape and this is his first film in 6 years. I can't speak on the Lin-Manuel Miranda music yet but he was sorely missed in Moana 2 as maybe only one or two songs were memorable comapred to the first film. Barlow & Bear did their best on that film though. As for the question at the end, I couldn't really think of any examples prior to this year off the top of my head but a strange one for me was Lee Isaac Chung directing Twisters. When i saw that announcement I thought it was a bit strange mainly due to the fact that Chung is known for smaller more personal stories and I had a feeling that they might have got a director with a bit more nous directing blockbusters due to the built in fanbase from the first. Boy was I wrong though I loved that film! 😂 Another upcoming example I can think of is Greta Gerwig directing Narnia for Netflix. Gerwig is mainly known for telling stories that put women at the centre and focus on feminist/liberal themes and now she's taken on the task of remaking whats known to be a very conservative story focusing on traditional values. Hell, Aslan is literally Jesus 😂 Seems very strange to me but she always makes fantastic movies so i'm willing to give the project the benefit of the doubt! Keep up the hard work man and have a great New Year.
