Im a Liverpool fan, and I have a lot of respect for Uniteds hardcore element, they are some of the best fans in the country. Without doubt united and Liverpool are the 2 biggest supported teams, and our fans could drive a protest forward. Lets get standing sections introduced and get our atmospheres back! Respect from LFC ... Northerners should stick together despite our differences.

Borussia Dortmund have a section in there stadium called the 'yellow wall' where every fans are dressed in the teams colour, non stop singing/chanting, massive flags and banners, flares, synchronized jumping etc. All this creates a unique and monstrous atmosphere in the stadium which shows how much the club means to them. If the Stretford End was like this MUFC would have the loudest and most passionate fans not only in Europe but in the world but right now, Old Trafford is just a library.

It doesn't take a lot to get an atmosphere going, all you need is like 10-20 guys to start chanting, and keep them going for 90 minutes, gradually more people will get involved, then you can bring flags and drums etc, instead of waiting for someone else to do it, go and do it yourselves, you don't need the club's permission to sing, just do it..

Thats not strictly true though. If you stick 20 guys into an area that is not vocal it doesn't change the mentality of the people surrounding the 20. Your lads took almost a decade before they were accepted by the club and some of the fans. Plus you had a mass of space that allowed likeminded fans to relocate to join the vocal fans. Clubs like United, and even my club, Norwich, cannot achieve this when all the seats around the vocal support are already taken. In fact, i'd even go as far as saying that the Holmesdale's growth within the stand is stunted now, i bet there are plenty of people in other stands that want to be involved, but can't because the area around the HF has been allocated to people who have sat there for decades and do not want to move. Unreserved seating/safestanding areas is the only way that this country will ever recapture the atmospheres of days gone by.

Celtic reintroduced this last season and it's been amazing... obviously Celtic is not the first club you'd think about during discussions on lack of atmosphere, but it can get a bit dull during smaller SPFL fixtures like Kilmarnock etc... There's 3000 safe standing capacity (Rail Seating) and it's been a huge success. There were some complaints in the beginning as people that had season tickets in this area when it was a seated area were uplifted.

Been to a few games this season in both scoreboard and Stretford end, actually got a good atmosphere going in the scoreboard, stood up the whole time, singing etc. And have been in good atmospheres in Stretford end right side. However, recently sat Stretford top tier for the first time in a league game against Bournemouth, the area I was in was just filled with grumpy season ticket holders, the bloke next to me turned up 5 minutes late, left 15 minutes early, didn't sing any songs, and was angled away from the pitch in order to chat to the other grumpy season ticket holders, absolute dead wood. Made me feel like I couldn't sing, even though it was only Bournemouth, I can't help but feeling people like this should make way for younger lads and go and sit in one of the quieter seated stands, Stretford end should all be made standing, less families and more young people, less grumpy old season ticket holders just there to chat

Standing was safe in 1989 and it would have been safer without fences. I started going to matches at Old Trafford in the 1964/65 and stood on the Stretford End most weeks (with the odd mover over to the Scoreboard or the Paddock). I saw a few pitch invasions but there were rare and only one when a game was in progress (City, '74). Hillsborough was caused by police incompetence and the fact that the fans were fenced in and had no way out. They had those fences up at Hillsborough in 1977 when we played Leeds there and it was claustrophobic to say the least. Hillsborough could have happened to any set of fans.

I think the problem is the exclusivity of getting a season ticket, I tried to get one but failed for a couple of years and now its not possible due to other commitments, they need to make a system of getting young kids to all get season tickets together for a cheaper price, somewhere like the Stretford End tier 1 or next to the singing section so, as Pete said, they can "aspire" to get in the singing section or into Stretty tier 2 and they can move together. This way the supporters can have a sense of belonging where they sit instead of just being with a load of strangers. Also the club need to listen to organisations such as MUST more as, at the end of the day, they are the voice of the people so the club need to recognise these groups and work with them to make improvements to the Old Trafford layout and ticketing system as a whole.

At Elland Rd we have achieved a singing end in the South Stand ( which is the opposite of the traditional singing Gelderd End ) but it look several years of problems with the Stewards ,Police ,Club and safety officers opposing it culminating in a ban on ticket sales in the end after a major altercation with fans Police and Stewards . Its now been unofficially accepted that its a standing and singing end and the tensions have gone. Its avoided by families and older people and the younger lads now buy their season tickets for that end . Our problem now lies away from home as we have away season ticket holders who are mainly alcoholic over 55s who stand there with their hangovers already kicking in from a 4 hr pre match drinking session with their arms crossed and unless there is huge allocation the singing types cant get a ticket . Your comment about Acoustics at OT is very relevant . At ER the South stand roof slopes down towards the pitch while the Gelderd End one slopes upwards so the sound is less channeled in the latter . Also 2 tier stands with the top one overlapping the bottom one makes it very hard to coordinate the singing between the top and bottom section who can't see each other. Thats why Spurs deliberately designed their new ground with a proper big one tier end .

I was going to write a long comment because this is a subject that hits home hard with me but I've said it all before on various You Tube videos and it all boils to one fact - football is NOTHING without atmosphere. All seater stadia certainly started the ball rolling but modern society and the people it has spawned mean we'll never get the glory days of the 70's and 80's back whether people are sat down or not.

2 reasons as to why I didn't renew my season ticket this season: 1) It was really expensive to maintain 2) most importantly, I sat in South Stand block 121 towards Stretford End and it was dead. Money aside, I did not come to sit on my seat quietly and watch my team. I came to stand up, cheer the lads on whenever I could and start singing in accordance with the songs emanating from the Stretford End, but no one else near me stood up or sung or shouted anything. I felt like an outcast...

Slightly different situation at the London stadium, it’s not that the hard core local lads are being replaced by tourists (no tourist would wanna come and see our shite team), but it’s the stadium itself. Corporate soulless bowl completely unfit for football but it keeps the money rolling in. Nothing us fans can do I’m afraid, the game has moved on and we can complain all we like, but we are mere customers to the business that is (it was) once our beloved football team

Away fans are the best way to rate fans these days and West Ham are up there even if they sing the same generic crap when they come to Old Trafford.

Well done on the documentary. I absolutely agree with what is said here. It isn't just an Old Trafford problem, it's a modern football problem in England. From our side at MUSC UAE, we always had a "terrace" culture. We have a standing area for lads which want to just stand, have a pint & sing their lungs out. Therefore, matchday culture is taught by us. It was a gradual process but MUSC UAE is probably the loudest supporters club in the MENA Region.

Old trafford is a huge ground, the sound just doesn't stay in the ground. The acoustics have to be changed. In the stadiums at borussia dortmund, real madrid and barcelona, the stands are so near to the pitch and the stadium is so enclosed, the sound just doesn't leave the stadium.

Not only do we need a singing section and that to be a standing section, but we also need the Club to help out. Like when they gave Champ19ns scarves to every fan and the whole stadium was lit up with scarves....I am sure the Club could play a part because even with a singing section, the rest of the stadium will be sitting there. At least give them something to wave and intimidate the opposing team when coming out with a sea of red.... Just a thought...

No top ground creates an atmosphere anything like reminiscent of yesteryear. Just another sad fact of today's football. All-seater stadia detract from atmosphere but just as likely to do so is the 'new football fan'. Fans who follow a team because they're successful and no nothing of its history or fan culture and consequently contribute nothing, other than to their respective clubs' store tills. In my day fans rallied the team to play good football. Sadly now it has to be good football in order to get arses off seats.

+79dougb And there lies the problem. Both Euro nights. Compare them to the dismal, non-existent atmosphere at PL games where players can easily be heard over crowd 'noise'. All grounds have suffered with the inception of all seater stadia. On top of this, grounds are infested with people who follow success. Some wearing a Leicester top today, would most likely have donned a United, City or Chelsea top over the last few years. The game can do without supporters like this who contribute nothing, other than money, to it.

We need an Ultras group..It's worked great for Celtic and Rangers ..I know it's not traditionally our culture but it's the best way forward and hopefully standing section along the lower Stretty for 18 to 40 year olds..And get the posh seats out of the Stretford end FFS.. It disappeared mate under a barrage of tourists and out of towners just turning up for a day out and to spend money in the souvenir shop, Liverpool is no different, both teams are victims of there own success, last time I was at Anfield was like being at any tourist attraction in London and eventually the local lads become fed up with it and the constant struggle to get tickets eventually leads them away from it, so you end up with more day trippers than locals who don’t know most of the songs and probably don’t know what the songs represent

Me and my Mum and Dad are "day trippers" and we leave every game we go to with hardly any voice left. We need to promote the chants. Have people handing out lyrics, drums, horns and chanting outside the ground i went to Man utd vs Liverpool in the league cup and that was by far the best ive been in at trafford for a cup game in years, we just need to teach these "day trippers" and the familys and the asian executives and all that about the singing cus they do support the club and bring the club the money we need to continue forward. We should move singing sections to each corner of the ground and refrain from swearing in main chants so all feel ok to join in as i know my mum and dad dont approve of it when lots of children around. Great video but it's totally wrong to blame the poor atmosphere on day trippers. Only a tiny percentage of people at a game have bought a ticket on the day or are not season ticket holders. The main problem is with all seater standing, increased pricing, and tbh some terrible songs! The bloke who writes them should be sacked!!!
