I don't think I've specifically seen this way of housing double dao. Very cool bit of kit, and i like that the profile of both blades is essentially the same; still a pair even if dissimilar.

@@dlatrexswords this set up is quite rare. When one first popped up years ago, eBay had a surge of fakes (no surprise there). But that quickly stopped, perhaps due to the difficulty constructing them.

That's very cool. The last sword I saw with a "trick" like this was the onibasu, a short sword in the scabbard of a full length katana, to allow for deceptively fast drawing. Clever what people can do with instruments of death :3

I've been collecting American made blades for years and during my travel in Shanxi Province of China, I had the pleasure to play with some ancient Chinese swords(Qing Dynasty) They were so well balanced and for sure Chinese swords are so under appreciated compare to Japanese blades. Thanks for the great video Scott!

American blades are also quite interesting. I like the early Revolutionary to War of 1812 period Eagle Head Sabers.

I'd not have believed it had you not shown it so convincingly. What a neat dao set. Is the mouth of the primary blade off set much at all when you look at the 'full' scabbard? It looked very convincing when you brought it out initially.
@mugenGRTC5 ай бұрын
Quite tricky eh?
@josuesepulveda68505 ай бұрын
The hidden blade in the scabbard made that sword very bad**ss,that weapon would be great in a street fight,taking an oponent by surprise with the second hidend blade.

I get the feeling it surprised a few people.

0:26 - I was thinking, it was probably used with a shield 🙂 Carried in locations where space is an issue, i can see that. The same thing happened in Europe, with the short 'dress' sword. on a side note, are there any Chinese examples of real swords made for children? This happened a lot around the world (in richer families). Great video. And a very cool sword with 'hidden' feature ;)
@wrentuathadedanann62095 ай бұрын
I wonder if they used the scabbard in a fight. Perhaps that’s how it was damaged?

Similar in length and weight, but no, not just a Chinese wakisashi. Duandao are carried when a full length sword isn’t called for. They are not a companion weapon, not part of set of one long one short saber.

Why a short sword? Another reason is piracy. If you're on a rolling heaving ship a big huge sword is more of a liability. This is why the cutlass exists.
