MUGGLES in the Leaky Cauldron..? - Harry Potter Theory

Welcome to Harry Potter Theory. Today we're discussing the LEAKY CAULDRON - a famous wizarding pub and inn that serves as a gateway between the muggle and magical worlds. More specifically, we’re going to be discussing WHETHER OR NOT Muggles can enter this magical pub, as there seems to be conflicting information floating around.
Now, provided that the famous wizarding pub is a GATEWAY between both worlds, it should go without saying that it has TWO entrances- one in Diagon Alley, and another on the Muggle street of Charing Cross Road in London’s West End.
However, it’s also worth noting that the Leaky Cauldron (built in the early 1500s) existed long before Charing Cross Road had ever even been conceived- existing far in advance of the Muggle street. In fact, the Leaky Cauldron was created TWO CENTURIES before the imposition of the International Statute of Secrecy- which meant that it had always been VISIBLE to Muggle eyes.
“While the pub was, from the first, a place for witches and wizards to congregate - whether Londoners or out-of-towners up for the day to shop for the latest magical ingredients or devices - Muggles were not turned away or made to feel unwelcome, even though some of the conversations, not to mention pets, caused many an unwary drinker to leave without finishing his mead.”
It’s now hard to imagine that a fully-fledged wizarding pub / HUB could be allowed to exist with direct access from a Muggle street- but those were different times. It’s even HARDER to imagine if we consider that the persecution of witches / wizards was widespread in Britain only a few centuries earlier.
But in the present day- what’s the deal with the Leaky Cauldron? If it exists on a muggle street, how could it NOT be accessible?

Another good idea is what would've happened if Harry and Ron waited for Mr. and Mrs. Weasley to return from platform 9 3/4. Would they have taken the boys directly to school or made contact to see if Dobby was still interfering? Who would've picked up the stranded wizards and would Molly approve of using the car?

@@laurendobinson5930 Thank you. This idea always bothered me because if everyone had all their stuff packed the night before, then there would've been time to spare. Also, I would've given Molly a Howler for not letting all the kids go first because the portal was sealed right as Harry tried to go through. If Harry went earlier the issue would be noticed and more Weasleys would've been in trouble.

I always figured Muggles couldn't see the pub unless they were with another magical person. After all, Muggle-Born magicians weren't going to go to a strange place without proper supervision. It's possible that for a random Muggle, stumbling upon a magical pub was overwhelming, but for the parents of magical children, they had some tolerance for the unusual.

If my quick math is correct (or nearly so), there were about 300 students at Hogwarts (Harry's class had 5 in his dorm room (so 10 (5 boys, 5 girls) x 4 houses x 7 years). Out of the students mentioned only 3-4 were muggle born. And we know that informing the student and parents was the job of a professor (McGonagall for Hermione, Dumbledore for Tom Riddle, and Hagrid for Harry). Those students and parents would have been taken to Diagon Alley by that professor (the one exception was, of course Tom Riddle) to exchange money and purchase the required school supplies and then told how to get on the train.

I presume relatives of wizards and witches might be allowed to enter the Leaky Cauldron. Assuming that's how Hermione's parents were able to get into Diagon Alley as I doubt the Granger house is hooked up to the floo network.

Question and a video idea from HBP: I'm curious. While Dumbledore and Harry were in the cave retrieving the locket horcrux, why didn't they just ladle out the potion from the basin and tip it on the cave floor or into the nearby lake? Dumbledore concluded that he had to drink the potion because it couldn't be touched with the hands or banished or transfigured. But why could he not simply ladle out the liquid with the conjured goblet and just tip it out instead of having to drink it? Is this a plot hole?

It would be too easy to empty the cup and some of the liquid would've disturbed the dangerous water below. Drinking the liquid ensures the person who isn't the drinker suffers even more because they have to keep up with the task until the locket could be retrieved. Dumbledore recovered quickly after the ordeal was over, but Harry was scarred once again by Voldemort.

It was stated by Dumbledore when examining the cup that he had to drink the contents in order to retrieve the locket, just the same as when entering the cave he says that a blood offering was required for entry!

I wonder what would happen if a Muggel just came into the leaky cauldron and ask random wizards for a specific potion or other magical item like from zonkos or something? Would they just be bewitched with a memory charm or would they actually get what they want? I can see Mr Weasley exchanging something magical against some "Muggel Artifacts". Another thing i was actually always wondering is: couldn't muggels technically work with magical creatures or make potions?

I vaguely remember that muggles do see some sort of sign for the Leaky Cauldron, but the sign appears different or shows a different business. Can anyone substantiate or disprove this please? I probably saw this in a movie so it wouldn't necessarily be canon.

It was from the first movie. The sign was blank when Hagris and Harry were walking up to the tavern but changed to show itself when they arrived to enter.

the question I was hoping to get answered is... do parents of muggleborns can enter the leaky cauldron to go to gringots? because it's evident on first book that muggles can't see the leaky cauldron. well, the video was interesting either way.

Parents of muggle born witches/wizards are informed that their child has been offered a place to Hogwarts by a personal visit by one of the professors of the school. They will come to their home, explain the wizarding world to them and what Hogwarts does. If they are happy with this and agree to let their child attend Hogwarts, then a magical spell is placed on them which lifts the veil from the eyes of the muggle parents. The veil is only lifted a bit, to show the muggle parents what they need to see, such as The Leaky Cauldron and Diagon Alley. However they wouldn't be able to see other magical places, such as the Ministry of Magic or Hogwarts, as these locations are not needed by the muggle parents. Only locations needed by them are revealed to them.

@@johnking5174 source? to me it sounds a bit "I messed up so I'm going to fart an excuse" but if there's reliable source for that information then it would answer my doubt. by the way, does that means the muggle parents can't go to the ministry of magic or st mungo? magical parents can visit hogwarts (we see lucius at hogwarts a few times) but muggle parents can't? as I said, it sounds as an "I messed up..."

@@WilliamWizer What do you mean source? This is simply my supposition. It's not real. You do realise the world of Harry Potter is make believe. if JK Rowling didn't write down every aspect of life, then the reader can fill in the gaps themselves.

@@WilliamWizer Muggle parents are rarely if ever seen in the ministry of magic or at Hogwarts. Just read the books. Hermione's parents rarely ever met with the professors. It was not needed, as they would send letters to them, or visit them in person. Magical parents most likely studied at Hogwarts themselves, so know it very well.

Random thought/question: Is it possible for 2 muggles to have a squib baby? I mean muggles can have wizarding babys, so i feel like there could be a chance for them to have a less magical baby aswell. But I never realy found evidance for that theory, so i would like to hear outher opinions or mabey someone know more about this? :D

​ @Ember and friend’s animations yeah your right :D so it wouldnt be an actual squib, but what i meant was: is it possible to have a muggle child, that is able to witness magic in a way a squib would (also seeing Hogwarts or Dementors for example)? like it would be partly magic, but not magical enough to perform any sorts of wizadry

So how did yhe Grangers enter the pub? Or other muggle parets who needed to take theor kid to Gringots and then shopping in Diagon Alley? If only wizards could see how did muggles like the Grangers find it? Was it only Hermione who could see it amd they just followed her int the pub?

pub are a very different type of bushiness, i live is Ga usa we have a restun here call waffle house it only closes when the weather is very bad. they will sever anyone even when it was not so cool to do so. im think a pub as a different energy. and what a great way to find the muggle born who the book missed
