In this short film, Emily Hannam discusses a pair of mid-seventeenth century paintings by the Mughal court artists Bichitr and Ramdas from the most famous South Asian manuscript in the Royal Collection, the Padshahnama (‘Book of Emperors’). Bichitr and Ramdas worked for the Mughal emperor Shah-Jahan (r.1628-58). By decoding the symbolism of the paintings, Emily explains how Shah-Jahan commissioned his artists to create paintings that celebrated the glory of his reign and dynasty. Through close visual analysis, she explores the materials, techniques and compositional frameworks that Bichitr and Ramdas employed to make manifest Shah Jahan’s imperial ideal of the Mughal state.

Wonderful, brief yet illuminating presentation on one Mughal miniature. Nice gift if you are a king ... especially a non-Mughal one.

I wonder why it's there! Probably The Badshahnama was looted by the British as their habit. because they have no glorious past to remember.

It's pronounced 'Muslim' and not 'MuZlim', just as it's 'Christian' rather than 'Chriztian'. Padhshahnama doesnt mean 'Book of Emperors'. It means 'Chronicle of the Emperor'. Perhaps the Royal Collection may want to get an expert who knows what they're talking about for these videos rather than someone whose got the right connections?

@@amnanshafol no. In Persian it is padhshahnameh. Over time in India the word was changed because people found it hard to pronounce. Just like some people can't say "sabzi" so they say "sabji". Or instead of "javid" they say "zavid" etc
