grigsolve right on! Ali and Joe were actually were quite close during this phase before Ali got his license back to box. In his Autobiography Ali explains in detail how he and Joe agreed to appear hostile at each other in public to generate interest and create a strong gate for their epic battle. It wasn't until a year later in the months leading to their 1971 fight, that Ali began to call Joe ignorant and Uncle Tom which really got under Frazier's skin and their hostility turned more real.

It's not subtle and it's douche baggy. Ali is genuinely pissed here, I think
@karlhughes122410 жыл бұрын
Yeah I agree..Ali usually trash talked and fooled around publicly with fighters when he was promoting an upcoming bout ..here he is low key that as you rightly say means he's a bit annoyed..there's a lot of tension there, but Frazier is the aggressor, and Ali is just realistic..it could easily have got nasty with the host agitating for the viewers, but thankfully Ali was quite calm...Ali was an opportunist; he played up to the cameras when it suited him..

@@som1980 - Agreed! Shame they couldn't be 'friends' but the politics of the time meant that Ali was thinking about freedoms, the state of world affairs, religion, politics, peace, human and civil rights, so he was also representing Frazier in that sense whereas Frazier overall, seemed to represent the system by publicly criticizing Ali for not joining the army etc., and even though Frazier lobbied for a return of Ali's licence, lent him a modest sum and gave him a ride from Philly to NY or vice-versa etc; that was not totally altruistic and he still refused to call Ali by his name from 64 onward, even though he was aware of how Ali hated that and before his exile had terrorized Patterson and Terrell for that same reason. Frazier was resentful, not Ali. Ali's jibes were cruel but they were both engaged in a war of words during their careers - Ali's are just more memorable due to its content and articulation plus Ali transcending sport. It was because of the profile Ali brought back to the HW division after beating Liston and defending several times with all the hoopla of predictions, a new style and all of his charisma - plus his comeback - that Joe earned the big purses when stepping in during his exile but Joe never seemed to publicly acknowledge that or Ali's greatness though Ali eventually did so about Frazier. Understandable why they could not get along.
@lwmson5 жыл бұрын
@@afsanaparvez6112 Your problem is that you were brainwashed by that stupid HBO documentary that came out 10 years ago -"Thrila in Manila." But that shit was nothing but pure propaganda. Ali didn't back stab Joe in any way. This film clip took place in 1969 while Ali was still in exile, long before he engaged in any pre-fight hype. It was Joe who was the one going on the offensive here. But when Ali calls him a "Tom" for dissing him by calling him "Clay," Joe would whine about it for the rest of his life. To say that Ali had black people turn on Joe, including Bryant Gumbel, is total bullshit. Although there were blacks at the time, like Bryant, who resented Joe for calling Ali "Clay," and thought Joe was a Tom for doing this, black people had minds of their own and didn't need Ali to tell them what to think To imply such would be an insult to the intelligence of black people.

No insult Frazier gave to Ali was worse than the stuff Ali said about him. Frazier helped Ali financially when the boxing organizations stripped him of his right to make a living. @rudimwongozi21692 жыл бұрын
@@richardbranton7396 it went on for years. Ali was immature and his ego was up. If Frazier was used or "weaponized" as you say against Ali it wasn't Joe's fault. So the uncle tom stuff was below the belt. Especially when Ali knew (and the public didn't) that Frazier had helped Ali financially. So the calling him a gorilla and stuff was below the belt and wrong. Frazier was wrong for calling Ali "Clay" but on the other hand Joe knew stuff about Ali that the public didn't know. He didn't think Ali was actually living up to everything he was representing to our people in public. I'm Muslim and was on Ali's side and against Frazier at the time. I didn't know everything then that I know about that situation now. I have come to the conclusions I have come to over these many years. Ali was a hero but no saint. And not above reproach. There's enough blame to go for both of them. Ali is still the greatest and I'm glad he prevailed in the trilogy winning two out of the three contests. But my opinion of Frazier has evolved over the years. Joe Frazier was a great champion and a hell of a man.

Rip Winkle If you wanna know the full story, look up the book Ghosts of Manila by Mark Kram Jr. Basically Ali went on a radio and started talking smack about Joe Frazier unprovoked. This confused Joe as he thought they were friends and Ali tried to explain that this was all to hype up the fight and Ali’s all just business. Joe wasn’t about hyping fights by doing these kind of things, so he took it personal. Ali continued his verbal on insults, so Frazier responded by this what you see in the video. That’s how their bitter rivalry started. I love both these men, ignorant fools gotta stop shitting on one or the other without knowing what really happened. Both men made some mistakes. A lot of people don't realize what was really going on between Frazier and Ali in this interview. Muhammad Ali had time on his hands and was constantly looking for ways to keep his name in the news. He toured college campuses, and even appeared in a Broadway play. He was already building the hype for what he knew was eventually going to be The Fight of the Century. Two different undefeated, Heavyweight Champion of the Worlds fighting to settle the matter once and for all who's the real champ. That had never happened in all of boxing history. The two main boxing organizations at the time were the New York Athletic Commission, and the WBA. Joe was the NYAC Champ, and Jimmy Ellis was the WBA Champ. Ali was expecting them to unify the belts. Then Ali will have his license back and fight the winner to prove once and for all who's the undisputed Heavyweight Champion of the World. Or, if things don't go as planned, and he loses his Supreme Court appeal, he goes to jail as a draft dodger. Jimmy Ellis was actually a fighter in Ali's camp trained by Angelo Dundee, the same guy that trained Ali. In a fight to unify the belts, most people expected Joe Frazier to To beat Ellis. As part of his psychological war against Joe Frazier & in anticipation of them fighting in about a year, Muhammad Ali moved to the Overbrook section of Philadelphia. Joe had lived in Philadelphia since he was 16, and had a gym in North Philadelphia. When Muhammad Ali moved to West Philadelphia, obviously it made the local news. Everybody in town was aware that Muhammad Ali was now living in Overbrook, not far from where both Wilt Chamberlain, and Will Smith used to live. Once he moved to Philadelphia, Muhammad Ali began stalking Joe Frazier around town, especially anytime he knew Joe was going to be making a public appearance. He taunted and insulted Joe at every opportunity. He was rallying everyone in Joe Frazier's hometown to turn against Joe. At one point, he stalked Joe Frazier down to Fairmont Park where Joe was working out and began taunting him there. Joe got so pissed off that they were going to fight for real. But because they would get arrested for public fighting, Joe challenged Ali to show up at his gym about an hour later. Ali not only showed up, but he roamed through the streets of North Philadelphia shouting out to everyone that would hear that the fight is about to go down. Businesses started closing up and word spread throughout all of North Philadelphia that an Ali / Frazier fight is about to happen for real!!! Eventually a crowd of over 10,000 people showed up, and flooded the area. It became a major thing, and police came toshut the whole thing down. It was all over the news that night, so everybody in Philadelphia heard about it. There's photos of Ali taunting Joe at his own gym that you can find online taken just before police ordered everybody to disperse. Police thought it was Ali drawing up publicity for a fight, and Ali was trying to be careful not to get arrested because he was still trying to get his boxing license back. Ali then announced to the crowd that they were going to take the fight back to the park, because the police chased him out of the neighborhood. When Joe didn't show up at the park, Ali announced to everybody that Joe was chickenshit, and too afraid to show up. He also made everybody believe that Joe had something to do with the police showing up because he was too afraid to fight. That's the way Joe is, he works for the enemy. Ali continued the taunts of Joe being an Uncle Tom Negro who works for the white man, too afraid to fight the real champion for the title at every opportunity while he was living in Philadelphia. That's why Joe Frazier keeps calling him Clay. He refused to use the name Muhammad Ali, because he wasn't a righteous man. Joe said that just because he changed his name to Muhammad ali, and says he's a minister, that don't make him one. Frasier said a real man don't talk, a real man do. Joe Frazier helped Muhammad Ali out by giving him money, testifying before Congress on his behalf and even petitioned the President of the United States to help get Ali's boxing license back. He felt betrayed when Muhammad Ali started calling him names, so he refused to call him by his new Muslim name and insisted by calling him by his slave name of Cassius Clay. Joe said that he is not a righteous man, so I refuse to treat him like one. And when we do get in the rain, I'm going to kill him. Now if you go back and watch the interview on the Mike Douglas show, you can see the references to all of this in Joe's conversation. He talks about Ali trying to run him out of his own hometown, and how Joe was ready to fight him right then and there at the gym. The Mike Douglas show was filmed in Philadelphia. When Joe got word that Ali was going to be on the show he went downtown to make sure he was on TV challenging Ali to kick his ass right to his face so that everyone in Philadelphia would see it. The producers of the Mike Douglas show likely had no idea Joe was going to show up until he actually showed up. That's why it starts out as a surprise, because they had no idea that Joe was going to come to the show, but since he already lived in at a gym in North Philly it was only a 20 minute cab ride. Muhammad Ali knew Joe Frazier was on edge. He had gone after Ali with the tire iron a short time before this interview at another time when Ali was stalking him, and taunting him in his hometown. That's why Muhammad Ali is so stressed out when Joe Frazier comes out, and he's very careful to be respectful in all of his language because he knew that Joe Frazier was liable to come after him right then and there on the TV show. He not only thought it might happen, he was practically expecting it to happen and was quite a bit nervous. You can see Joe is pissed off from beginning to end, and making it clear to everybody in Philly that was watching the show that he is not afraid of Muhammad Ali and he'll kick his f****** ass right here on the TV show if he pops off at me. Ali knew it as well, that's why he was very careful with his words throughout the whole interview. He knew that Frazier was a powder keg about to explode. To ali, it was all a game. He's got his promotion hat on 24/7 and is always just building hype for the fight. That and trying to screw up his opponent's head. To Ali it's all business, nothing personal. To Joe it's all personal, and I don't give a s*** about business I just want to kick your ass. A short time after this, Ali moved from West Philadelphia to across the river in Cherry Hill New Jersey. His tax situation was better there, and he was now less than 90 minutes from New York City, in case he needed to go there for business. He would go back and forth in a mobile home that he purchased, and return to his home in New Jersey at night. Because he was still living just 15 minutes outside the Philadelphia city limits, he could still stalk Joe, especially at some of the appearances Joe made in the area as a singer with his group Joe Frazier and the Knockouts. Ali would show up and then heckle Joe from the audience until they kicked him out. So there was a lot going on before Joe Frazier unexpectedly showed up at this appearance on the Mike Douglas show. Ali was nervous as hell throughout this interview cuz he didn't know what was going to happen, not just during the show but as soon as the show was done filming as well. Ali wasn't ready for this. He expected to be appearing by himself, and likely had an entire agenda on how he wanted to use the appearance on a nationally televised talk show filmed in Philadelphia to his advantage. Joe was super focused on using the appearance to make sure that this is what everybody's going to be talking about in North Philly tomorrow. Not Joe Frazier being afraid to fight Muhammad Ali in the incident between the two of them that was in the papers and local TV news just days earlier.

Also, the reason that Muhammad Ali was nervous about Joe Frazier suddenly appearing at this television appearance on the Mike Douglas show filmed in Philadelphia was that it occurred just a short time after they had a big public display outside of Joe Frazier's gym in North Philadelphia. I mean come on dude, it's there right in front of your eyes. I think he was rattled by some of the things Ali had been saying out in public about who the real champ was and all that, but that was Ali.
