Zbigniew Pietrzykowski had knocked out arguably the greatest amateur boxer ever in Lazlo Papp, was at his physical peak at 25 years of age, was a brilliant southpaw stylist/technician who at the time had over 200 bouts under him and had won and competed in the top tournaments around the world yet it is a testament to the GREATNESS of Muhammad Ali that he was able defeat this brilliant fighter whilst he was ONLY 18 years old, when he had still not developed his man strength and was still growing and the fact that he had far less experience than his southpaw opponent, simply amazes me. Mr. Ali was already a master boxer at 18 years old he was fighting and extremely heavy-handed fighter that could end a fight with one punch. Mr Ali was slipping punches with ease so well that unless you've watched a lot of fights you think the guy just missed. Slipping punches is one of the most difficult techniques to learn and he seems to have mastered it at an early age he truly was a great champion inside and outside the ring.

He said it but it did not happen. He used the story for mileage about racism. He was in raucous living conditions many coming and going it was lost or stolen or accidently thrown out. All friends and relatives testfied as such and said "at no time did he say to any of us at the time or over the years that he threw it into the river. also had that been the case the medal quite easily could have found by divers even if it was sunk in silt with metal detectors or many methods

Awesome fight. Really cool that this was uploaded for people to watch. Never thought I would ever get to see Ali's gold medal match in the Rome Olympics. Both fighters were REALLY good. You don't see amateur boxers in the Olympics like this, any more. The only boxer I've seen, who was up there with these two, in the Olympics, was the super heavyweight gold medalist in 1992, Roberto Balado, a Cuban dude. That dude was GOOD. Course he died in a car crash 2-3 years after he won gold. Ali was this promising fighter back then. If you see a polished amateur, it's not always a good sign. That's why you could kinda imagine what Ali mighta thought of his performance in this final fight. Some of those rights were really really weak. You win the gold, you take off the 'amateur' training wheels, you're a new man AND a new boxer. Knowing what we know of Ali now, as the 'Greatest' boxer of all time, it didn't even look like he had any extra pressure on him against Pietrzykowski. But he probably did.

First two rounds could have gone either way, I split them. Third round dominated by Ali and as someone said if it goes to a 4th Ali probably would have stopped him.

I think Pietrzykowski won the first two rounds. Made Ali missing and counter accurately. Not sure what the announcer was watching. Ali clearly improved later in his career to the highest level, but here he's outboxed and often schooled by the more experienced fighter.

Commentator was watching some other fight I guess. Ziggy was awesome. It was close and he got some terrific punches in.

Was thinking the same thing. Was I watching a different fight? 1st rd. was easily Ziggy's I thought. 2nd was close and could have gone either way but maybe the second half Ali pulled it out. 3rd rd.

Gdyby Pietrzykowski zachowal ten sam poziom do konca,mialby wieksza szanse na mniej ciezkich ciosow Ali’ego,gdyz mialby wieksza rezerwe kondycji do conajmniej blokowania ciosow Ali’ego.Jednak trener Pietrzykows-kiego popchnal go w II-giej przerwie do zwiekszonego ataku i to byl koniec Pietrzykowskiego. W III rundzie na samym poczatku przeforsowal,zaczal naciskac z atakami,a tym samym slabnac,wowczas Ali bedac wyzszym i majac dluzsze rece zadal pare panchow i ogluszyl/obezwladnil Pietrzykowskiego. Polak odslonil sie,zaczal przyjmowac bez kontroli Ali’ego uderzenia,zaczal walczyc chaotycznie i to byl koniec naszego zawodnika. Powinien lepiej poznac przeciwnika,a Pietrzykowski powinien wiecej oslaniac sie,bez przesadnej ofensywy.

Ali never fought such an evasive fighter after this victory. On the contrary, Ali himself was always the one who managed to keep a distance to his opponents. Ali was a counterpuncher by nature. He never had to chase his opponents, instead he just had to wait till they got tired and outboxed before he started to seriously fight back.
@pawelwojcik201110 жыл бұрын
Czyli przekręty w boksie nie są niczym nowym. Zbigniew Pietrzykowski wygrał to złoto, a komentator ogląda raczej jakąś inną walkę. R.I.P.

Amazing fight, with all the respect to Ali for his future accomplishments and his age at the time of this fight, I think Ziggy won first two rounds, and the commentator’s comments were one sided favoring his countryman. I think Ziggy should have won the Gold medal, but it wasn’t meant to be. Both of the fighters established friendship to the end of their lives, respecting each others ability to fight in the ring without the bad shows we see in today’s boxing shows. One of the best fighters, RIP Ali & Ziggy.

I agree, but Ali won the third round big.
@mikerutkowski56694 жыл бұрын
Wes Inman -I agree, the last minute of the 3rd round, Ali dazed Ziggy. He won 5:0 from judges. But perhaps I’m comparing the way they scoring olympics now, total number of punches landed, it might have looked differently. Nevertheless, the 3rd round was the “preview” of the Great Ali as the undisputed King of the Ring. 😀
@raytaaffe65884 ай бұрын
I absolutely agree with your scoring. Although Ali looked great, most of his punches missed,and most of Ziggy's landed. However, maybe the strange decision by the judges did the world a great favour by allowing Ali to progress the GOAT boxer and a wonderful and entertaining person.
