George Foreman vs Muhammad Ali
-
George Foreman defends the Heavyweight Championship of the World for the third time against former Champion, Muhammad Ali. Ali at 32, had been given little change against the fearsome puncher who had knocked out both Frazier and Norton, whom both had beaten ali in the past, in 2 rounds. The fight took place in Kinshasa, Zaïre (todays Congo), and was put together by promotor Don King. This is considered by many as the most significent fight of Muhammad Alis career. The fight was called Fight of the Year for 1974.
-
Their records at the time
George Foreman: 40-0
Muhammad Ali: 44-2

@DaQuan Yeah, Cus D'amato instruct him to imagine punching through the opponent. He was rather small for the other heavyweight boxers, he'd to be more agressive to compensate.

@PEDRELVIS you’re correct for sure but when he did and it was there, things got nasty. He once said he was trying to punch his opponents nose up into his brain. This would’ve been just that opportunity

@O rlly Bish? If you dont beat the 10 count, its considered a knockout genius. Btw, the NUMBER 1 time that a boxer is ripe to be knocked out is when they are exhausted. As for beating the count, he BARELY did and had the ref not stopped it there, Foreman would have been knocked out in the next round. The ref saved Foreman from getting smashed up the next round. He did his job, and protected an exhausted fighter from getting hurt.

I originally watched this fight live on tv, I was 14, I'd seen Foreman absolutely destroy both Frazier and Norton. Even as a huge Ali fan I just couldn't see him beating Foreman, just about every sports writer had Foreman winning by early knockout. I was elated that he won, but felt guilty about doubting him. Watching the fight now, I can see that it was a relatively easy win for Ali, he won practically every round, George is almost dead on his feet after round 3, and obviously we now know that Ali had probably the strongest chin in heavyweight boxing. It all looks so simple now, but at the time everyone thought Ali's tactics were wrong, until he proved he was right.

@Clapton IsGod Funny. Good job I stopped that punch with my face. Seriously though if you watch carefully Ali hit George more times in the fight as he received. If the fight had ended after seven rounds Ali would have been ahead on points.

@Ahmed For sure. Foreman may have even been a quarter or a half an inch taller but tales of the tape were virtually the same. What really surprised me many years after was that Foreman had 25 inch thighs whereas Ali's measured 26.

I was around at the time also and like you had thought that Foreman would win. However when I saw the photos in the newspaper the next day announcing that Ali had won it struck me that Ali was as big as Foreman and that I shouldn't have predicted on the basis of the Frazier Foreman fight given Frazier's lack of stature.

Ali avoided the deep waters in middle of ring, also forced Foreman to attack with his shoulders squared up. In doing so he was left vulnerable to Ali’s straight punches, also Foreman prefers to throw hooks, power punches from base. Ali was able to save his legs by rope a dope technique and exposed Foreman’s wide shots. Foreman took some chunks out of his side but Ali was a master at anticipating and absorbing blows. Ali laid the trap and continued to bait the trap by talking smack in his ear. Ali greatly improved his chances by being the overwhelming favourite fighter back in the motherland. If you don’t think that helped him ya don’t kno jack shit about fighting. The grappling on inside also wore down Foreman, left arm behind head, right arm grabbing Foreman’s left elbow or pinning his forearm. The devil is in the details. The physical strength of Ali at this weight is freakish. At times was manhandling forearm when foreman off balance with overshooting shots.also freakish is his ability to take pain.able to absorb wicked body shots to his flanks. Like a shaolin monk he had his iron shirt on. If you’ve never seen When we were Kings” it’s a must watch. To really understand the fight u gotta watch the doc. The crowd willed it

I was a Japanese senior high school student at that time, and none of my classmates including me believed Ali`s victory. Because of his victory, I learn that a miracle could happen, and he taught me that "Never give up, and continue making efforts to the last ditch." Later, George Foreman regained the Championship at the age of 45. Great George also did a miracle. Ali and Foreman are my greatest heroes.

My father was a very peaceful person but, legend tells he was a pretty good fighter. Legend says he single punched a lot of big guys or fought to the end, never loosing. He surely was a hard man, working hard to put food on the table. He never told me a word about his fights. I respect him so much for that. 30 years later my dad has got Alzheimer too. He call me little boy. He's so peaceful still and in pretty good shape, we keep throwing some hands, every time we do so He hug me like a friend at the end. That's the best feeling in the world.

One of the greatest performances in boxing history. In boxing, styles make all the difference. Ali showed here that he was the best ADAPTER to any style that ever lived. George Foreman was physically superior here and on paper, should have crushed Ali and would have been a tougher matchup for most other boxers. But Ali overcame all of that simply by adapting and outsmarting. He literally had no physical advantages over Foreman here, and Foreman had destroyed everything in his path to this point.

I was in the UK when this fight took place. I had grown up watching Ali, from when he first fought Henry Cooper ( as Clay then). He became my absolute hero, and revolutionised what a heavy weight boxer could be. When Ali fought Fireman I genuinely feared for him. Because of the time difference I woke in the morning fearfully listening to the news on the BBC expecting to hear that Ali had been destroyed. The sheer joy I felt when the result was broadcast, was mixed with amazement. I am now over 70, but this victory still stands out as the greatest sporting victory in my life. I still watch it, and still get goosebumps with a smile on my face.

George’s record was incredible: 40-0 with 37 knockouts, and he was on top of his game! This was an enormous challenge for Muhammad Ali as he was already way past his physical prime. He beat him mentally more than anything, Ali was a true scholar of boxing. As Cus D’amato said: “Boxing is 75% mental and emotional”. Which ironically is why Tyson cannot be mentioned in the same breath as Ali.

It was a beautiful right hand that Ali finished the fight with but for me Foreman was more exhausted than knocked out. I think he could have beaten the count of 10. Notice when it reaches the count of 10 he simply walks away. He knew he was beaten in every way and had nothing left in his tank. He accepted his loss. Great fight.

People today have absolutely no idea how great George Forman was ,he obliterated every boxer he came up against and Ali was given no chance in this fight and there was calls for the fight to be binned for the sake of Ali’s health . This was his greatest triumph and cemented him as the greatest heavy weight boxer of all time .

More the fight itself, it was the atmosphere of the place, the passion of the people is what stood out for me. The whole place was in pandemonium when the fight ended. We don't see this kind of passion anymore in boxing. This was the golden age of boxing .

Ali's strategy relied on avoiding foreman's lethal face punches. Interestingly Foreman always pushes opponents who are close back, but this time he had no choice but to close in.
Eric West

His strategy to me looked like he pulled the other boxers head down the entire match so they can't see well and tire them self out trying to hit him and once George was tired enough he punched back.Even in his matches with Joe he was pulling his head down behind the neck entire fight.

Alis ability to take punishment was amazing, but he had a great knack for offsetting the power of blows because he got away with so much holding and hand jostling. That and his ability to turn at just the right time, helped him not to take full brunt of blows.

@Neoz he does it on purpose. Ali’s style is to watch the opponents style, and to adapt to the opponent. He has to open right away because Ali usually wastes some of the first rounds just by watching and studying the opponent. He needs time and usually at round 3 he starts fighting.

I can see Ali is very confident with his endurance In almost every fight, Ali likes to hit his enemy straight away, so that makes him very open, maybe he does it on purpose so he can find gaps from his opponent or have his own strategy.

George was just going through the motions and his body was falling all over the place. Powerless punches and actions of a drunken man. This shows that powerful body is just not enough, you need stamina and a thinking mind to overcome an opponent.

I like how we saw a more aggressive side of Ali here. He took the fight to Foreman from the opening bell. No-one else could have got away with that. Classic speech from Ali afterwards, too; "I told you! All you critics who've been slagging me off! I told you, all you people who were saying I'm too old. I told you. He's got no power, he swings like a sissy." 😀 He also apparently said ito his cornermen after the first round; "George Foreman don't scare me. He don't hit hard." Surely Ali was joking. There'll never be another like him again.
