George Foreman defends the Heavyweight Championship of the World for the third time against former Champion, Muhammad Ali. Ali at 32, had been given little change against the fearsome puncher who had knocked out both Frazier and Norton, whom both had beaten ali in the past, in 2 rounds. The fight took place in Kinshasa, Zaïre (todays Congo), and was put together by promotor Don King. This is considered by many as the most significent fight of Muhammad Alis career. The fight was called Fight of the Year for 1974.

Well, Ali said he will drop Foreman in 8 and he did it. Foreman is still all praise for Ali saying that Ali could have punched him when he was falling but did not. Ali never hurt anyone more than he should and in several occasion signalled to referees to stop a fight so he does not have to keep beating anyone. Ali was a sportsman, not a slugger. We may not see another heavyweight like him for ages to come.

It happened that way because Ali was so fast and infinitely smarter than Foreman in the ring. Watch it again and notice the frequent hand jostling segments. Foreman's trick was to push his opponent's guard hands down. Then unleash a power punch or a flurry while the man was defenseless. A dirty trick if you ask me. The hand jostling in this fight was Ali spoiling Foreman's trick. And often, as Foreman attempted to push Ali's hands down, the GOAT would quickly smack him. Nobody else had the speed to do that. Foreman, being the ring "genius", he was...didn't adapt. He kept trying his old dirty tricks on Ali as Ali constantly pushed Foreman's hands away and smacked him. Time and time again. Again, no other fighter was smart enough and fast enough to pull off what Ali did.

The only fight in Ali's career that I would have bet the house that he had NO chance to win. I was wrong. Foreman (for you youngsters who don't remember) was the 70's version of Mike Tyson. NO ONE lasted more than a couple of rounds with the Monster, George Foreman. He was a terrifying man in the ring who had destroyed everyone that Ali had lost to. Besides the Tyson-Douglas and Clay-Liston fights, this was an upset of epic proportions. God Bless you Muhammad, you will be loved and missed.

They finally found Ali in a back alley, performing magic tricks for a bunch of little African kids. I mean, he’s arguably the most famous person in the world, and in his finest moment, he wanders off to hang with local kids. He was one in a billion. There will never be another. It upsets me that I never got to meet him, or hug him. But I’m so happy to have lived when he lived.

I was in the UK when this fight took place. I had grown up watching Ali, from when he first fought Henry Cooper ( as Clay then). He became my absolute hero, and revolutionised what a heavy weight boxer could be. When Ali fought Fireman I genuinely feared for him. Because of the time difference I woke in the morning fearfully listening to the news on the BBC expecting to hear that Ali had been destroyed. The sheer joy I felt when the result was broadcast, was mixed with amazement. I am now over 70, but this victory still stands out as the greatest sporting victory in my life. I still watch it, and still get goosebumps with a smile on my face.

In the 1996 documentary "Muhammad Ali: When we were Kings," journalist, Norman Mailer, says that Ali landed eight punches in a flash immediately prior to the knockout, could have landed the ninth one too as Foreman was going down towards the canvas, but didn't, because Ali didn't want to spoil the artistry and science of the knockout with a "clumsy unaesthetic ninth punch," which according to Norman Mailer, would have made it look like Ali didn't have a masterplan from start to finish, that Ali's knockout of Foreman was nothing more than "a lucky break," nothing more than "a fluke," nothing more than "a clumsy stroke of luck," rather than the knockout having been the climax, the grand finale, of a victory that Ali had charted skillfully, methodically and meticulously, from start to finish. According to Norman Mailer, Ali wanted history to remember that he, Ali, knew what he was doing all along in that iconic fight, from start to finish, and I side with Norman Mailer's take. In the same 1996 documentary "Muhammad Ali: When we were Kings," Norman Mailer says that a few moments after the start of round one, Ali threw what is called a "right hand lead punch" at George Foreman, which is considered an insult, because "right hand lead punches" leave the boxer throwing them exposed to an instant counter-punch, possibly an instant knockout counter-punch, so what Ali partly implied by throwing a "right hand lead" at Foreman in the opening moments of the fight, was that Foreman was "a slow clumsy unskillful boxer," who could not even take advantage of an opportunity presented by a "right hand lead" being thrown at him. Foreman does actually look insulted by Ali throwing a "right hand lead" at him in the opening moments of the fight, and it was clearly part of Ali's plan to disorientate Foreman, mentally and psychologically, let alone physically. In the 2009 documentary "Facing Ali," George Foreman says that if it were him in Ali's shoes, he would have thrown that ninth punch, that "killer punch" as George Foreman puts it, just to make certain of a knockout. Because of his victory, I learn that a miracle could happen, and he taught me that "Never give up, and continue making efforts to the last ditch." Later, George Foreman regained the Championship at the age of 45. Great George also did a miracle. Ali and Foreman are my greatest heroes.

@@MrEjidorie Foreman was a young & inexperienced boxer with a horrible Trainer- Dick Sadler who never adjusted George's fighting strategy after he was beginning to get tired and playing into Ali's trap on the ropes. Even Ali's trainer Angelo Dundee, said that he would've had Foreman positioning himself in the center of the ring and refusing to go to the ropes. Would George have won with a better trainer and an unbiased Ref, probably not, but the fight would've been much closer and exciting. This was a boring fight and Ali's fights against Norton were boring as well. His best fights were against Frazier.

The fight was magnificent, but what will never be repeated was just how big it was. Boxing used to huge in the early 70's and this match was just about the biggest thing going on in the world. That and the fact that a lot of people really believed that Foreman was going to kill Ali or at least seriously hurt him. After the match, there was a sense the crescendo of the sport had passed. As it turns out, it had.

Ok, Ok, I know... anyways, came here to review this fight because I just watched the movie "Ali" and wanted to compare the real fight to the movie. What I don't understand (and I know nothing about boxing) is: (1) Why Foreman's corner didn't direct him to back up, make Ali get off the ropes and come to center ring. To me, looked like Ali was "resting" on the ropes, just waiting for Foreman to fatigue. (2) Ali kept hanging on Foreman's neck, pulling him down, furthering Foreman's fatigue. Shouldn't that have been a foul? IMO, Ali won by strategy and "outsmarting" Foreman, and GF's team should have figured that out and directed him how to handle it. Ali was a great fighter, I know that, but I liked his sense of humor and his attitude. He was also GREAT at marketing himself. He was an intelligent man. However, George Foreman just seems like the nicest man, the kind of man you would invite to your family barbeque (using the GF Grill of course!).

I originally watched this fight live on tv, I was 14, I'd seen Foreman absolutely destroy both Frazier and Norton. Even as a huge Ali fan I just couldn't see him beating Foreman, just about every sports writer had Foreman winning by early knockout. I was elated that he won, but felt guilty about doubting him. Watching the fight now, I can see that it was a relatively easy win for Ali, he won practically every round, George is almost dead on his feet after round 3, and obviously we now know that Ali had probably the strongest chin in heavyweight boxing. It all looks so simple now, but at the time everyone thought Ali's tactics were wrong, until he proved he was right.

Ali was 32 and George was 24, Ali not in his prime then, they made him loose weight for endurance. These fights could go long. Strategy and training from Ali was always the best. Let the person tire, don’t waste energy on body shots like Foreman and Frazier did and then later go for the head and he would cut you or knock you down. Ali’s punches are so incredibly fast. Ali's strategy: - Go on the offensive. Foreman was used to pursuing opponents, cutting off the ring, and he was very good at it. So Ali didn't dance. Going after Foreman confused and aggravated him. - Provoke Foreman into throwing his heaviest punches to tire him out. This was incredibly dangerous, Foreman could knock anybody out with either hand. But Ali needed Foreman to get tired, fast. Ali relied on his almost-superhuman "punch radar" to dodge and absorb most of Foreman's power. - Taunt Foreman to keep him from thinking twice about how tired he was getting. Lean back on the ropes to preserve energy, and to make Foreman think he was just one more hard punch away from a knock-out. - Continually land punches on Foreman's jaw. That, combined with exhaustion, set him up for a knock-out. - Wait for Foreman to be so tired and angry that he dropped his hands and stopped defending, and capitalize on those openings.
