What a god. You know, my Dad is one of the greatest people I ever met. I don't just say that cos it's my DAD, I say it as if he had not have been, but I'd have been lucky enough to meet him as a man. All my friends, all my friends Dads, all our neighbours - all of them said the same thing. My Dad was one of the greatest men they ever knew. Why do I say this? Because one of the few men my Dad ever laid praise on, even though my Dad had no real interest in boxing or sports, was Ali. He told me lots of times over the years - Ali was one of the greatest men who ever walked the Earth. I reckon they will both be having some good friendly conversations in Heaven as I write this.

Over fifty years after he burst upon the scene as a gold-medal winner at the 1960 Olympics, in Rome, Muhammad Ali remains a magical figure, known and loved throughout the world. As a boxer, Muhammad brought unprecedented speed and grace to his sport, while his charm and wit changed forever what the public expected a champion to be. His accomplishments in the ring were the stuff of legend. But there was always far more to Muhammad than what took place in a boxing ring. Muhammad’s life and career played out as much on the front pages of national and international newspapers as on the inside sports pages. His early embrace of the Nation of Islam and his insistence on being called Muhammad Ali instead of his “slave name,” Cassius Clay, heralded a new era in black pride. His refusal to be inducted into the United States Army anticipated the growing antiwar movement of the 1960’s. Traveling across continents, he hand-delivered food and medical supplies to such needy sites as the Harapan Kita Hospital for Children in Jakarta, Indonesia; the street children of Morocco; and Sister Beltran’s orphanage for Liberian refugees on the Ivory Coast, to name just a few. At home, he visited countless numbers of soup kitchens and hospitals. He helped such organizations as the Chicago-based adoption agency, The Cradle; the Make-A-Wish-Foundation; the Special Olympics’ organization Best Buddies; Herbert E. Birch Services, an organization that runs a school for handicapped children and young adults and a summer camp for children infected with AIDS; and “Fight Night” which generates funds for the Muhammad Ali Parkinson Research Center at Barrow Neurological Institute, in Phoenix, Arizona. At the State Capitol in Michigan, he advocated new laws protecting children. In schools across America, he taught children the virtues of tolerance and understanding through his book HEALING. Muhammad perhaps raised more money for American charities than any other living person. Muhammad was the recipient of countless awards. In addition to being honored by Amnesty International with their “Lifetime Achievement Award,” the Secretary-General of the United Nations bestowed him with a citation as “United Nations Messenger of Peace.” He was also named the “International Ambassador of Jubilee 2000,” a global organization dedicated to relieving debt in developing nations. Former President Jimmy Carter has called Muhammad “Mr. International Friendship” and, in 2005, Muhammad was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom.

This was when Muhammed Ali was with the Nation of Islam, which taught the things he is talking about now, when he found the actual true religion of Islam that isn't dogmatic like NOI he changed his philosophy accordingly. Elijah is not a prophet and NOI is nothing to do with the actual religion of Islam, it was more of a cult that formed to fight the white supremacy. Which is understandable as to why he talks about separatism, etc etc.

But he did witness atrocities that fueled his anger. I think he did make a mistake in taking it so far; that more violence and intolerance would/doesn't help anything. But he did recognize this error and converted in '75 to actual Islamic faith and denounced racism of any kind. Don't give up on The Greatest, he's just human too.

In or outta the real mean-Ring. Ya'll time Greatest BIG Ali's SIX CORE PRINCIPLES & MOTIVATIONS. Confidence: Belief in oneself, one’s abilities, and one’s future. Conviction: Belief that gives one the courage to stand behind that belief, despite pressure to do otherwise. Dedication: Devoting all of one’s energy, effort, and abilities to a certain task. Giving: To present voluntarily without expecting something in return. Respect: Esteem for, or a sense of the worth or excellence of, oneself and others. Spirituality: A sense of awe, reverence, and inner peace inspired by a connection to all of creation and/or that which is greater than oneself.

@@devonricketts2417 Too many hard fights for Ali resulted in Pugilistica Dementia. He also did'nt have the common sense to avoid head punches when he was doing all that "rope-a-dope" bullsh*t. Very sad in the end!

@Cassie Thornburg Oh but it is. I suggest you look up what Ali's doctor Ferdie Pacheco had to say on the subject. The late, great author and boxing aficianado Budd Schulberg also had some interesting things to say regarding Ali's "illness". No one is doubting that he had Parkinsons, but they accept that it manifested through Ali taking far too many blows to the head. He was diagnosed as having Pugilistica Dementia (yes, it's a real medical term) before his Parkinsons was made public knowledge. The problem with Ali's fans is that they cannot accept that this happened to the self-proclaimed Greatest. It's a very sad story all round!

@Cassie Thornburg Tell me "what you truly know" then Cassie, I will listen......but I hope it is not going to be some wild conspiracy theory, that contradicts all of the available medical evidence.

Well that seems to be that. Ali was poisoned though.......by the fists of the likes of Frazier, Foreman, Norton, Holmes, Shavers and the rest. He comes across very badly here, so the poison was definitely working!

Muhammad Ali was the undefeated heavyweight champion of the world in 1967. He was highly acclaimed, earning money and fame in his profession of pugilism, until he was called to join the Vietnam draft. Ali didn't believe in the Vietnam War, and on April 28, 1967, he protested by refusing to step forward when his name was called, resulting in his arrest. The New York State Athletic Commission, the most influential boxing commission at the time, decided to revoke Ali's boxing license before he was even convicted. The other spineless commissions followed suit. During the three years he wasn't allowed to box, Ali had to go on speaking engagements at various colleges to make enough money to put food on the table and pay his bills. By the time Ali was reinstated in 1970, three of his best years as a professional were gone. Ali was closer to 30 than 25, leaving the world to only wonder what those three years could have produced. To make a comparison, Sugar Ray Leonard faced and defeated the likes of Roberto Duran and Tommy Hearns between the ages of 25 and 28. Roy Jones, Jr. gave James Toney his first loss and defeated the legendary Mike McCallum during the same time period of his career.

@truth2masses I was talking about the religion of Islam, not people. Muslims that do that are not really following the teachings of Muhammed (PBUH). Islam is against racism.
