Muhammad Ali was the complete boxer - intelligent, skillful, and very fast. He changed the entire picture of boxing from slugging matches to a scientific art. He was fascinating to watch in the ring. He danced, jabbed with the speed of lightning, and couldn't help being a clown at times. We are extremely lucky to have lived during his times. Not only did he live by example as a boxer, but also as a superb human being. Thanks Ali.

There were others before Ali that did scientific boxing. However he had tools they didn't. Mainly a long reach that he mastered. He also had the speed of much lighter weight boxers along with very good stamina. However it would have been interesting to see him fight Rockey Marciano. His stamina was unmatched. Every punch he threw was a potential ko. And even in 15 rounds he never slowed down or quit throwing ko. punches.

By 1977 Ali had already fought a long professional career in boxing. Muhammad Ali began his pro boxing career in 1960 in his first pro fight, by the end of 1963 he was 19 and 0. After beating 24-year-old George Foreman in 1974 I have no idea in the World what the hell Muhammad Ali is doing fighting at 35 years old in the heavyweight division after more than 17 years since his debut as a pro boxer. Ali should have retired in 1974. Ali regained the World Championship title beating Foremen by KO in the 8th round in Zaire Africa. Ali was then 45 and 2. Ali would win his next 10 fights going to 55 and 2 after beating Ernie Shavers. This should have been the end for Ali at 55 and 2. Shavers went the full 15 rounds with Ali in 1977. Ali won the fight and definitely should have retired after beating Shaver's leaving him with a 55 and 2 record in 1977. 1977 definitely should have been the end of boxing for Ali. Unfortunately for the now aging Ali it was not the end thus leaving his final fights after 1977 a mere shadow of his former youthful stamina, quickness and ability. Larry Holmes and Trevor Berbick would humble Ali as after 1977 Ali by that time those fights occurred Ali was pushing up near 40 years old. The heavyweight division is a different thing than Floyd Mayweather fight weight. When Ernie Shavers punched you in your face, your family relatives felt the thud impact too!!!
@TruthLivesNow
@TruthLivesNow 2 жыл бұрын
Joe is totally correct in his analysis. Muhammad Ali, certainly should have retired after this bout in 1977, never going against Ernie Shavers. After the Ernie Shavers fight Fred Pacheco, Ali's longtime Doctor, after examining reports showing "Ali's Kidneys were falling apart," quit when nobody was listening to him. Alfredo Evangelista was only 23 years old in this fight, he went on to have a record of 78 fights 61 wins 41 Knockouts 13 Losses 4 Draws. He had enough hits in this fight where anyone looking could see Muhammad Ali should have been finished. Just to compare fighters: Muhammad Ali 61 Fights 56 Wins 37 Knockouts 5 Losses George Foreman 81 Fights 76 Wins 68 Knockouts 5 Losses Earnie Shavers 89 Fights 74 Wins 68 Knockouts 14 Losses 1 Draw Muhammad Ali was only 32 years old when he fought George Foreman. He took a lot of hits from strong heavyweights, and was great when Ali was younger. To me, when I compare records of Muhammad Ali with other Heavyweight Champions before him and after him, Muhammad Ali is the most over rated Boxer in my lifetime. I mean, Larry Holmes, Under rated compared to Ali, 75 Fights 69 Wins 44 Knockouts 6 Losses, at 31 years old, Muhammad Ali at almost 39 years old, clobbered Muhammad Ali in 1980. Very sad!

He should’ve finished after the Thrilla in Manilla. He needed to win the rubber match with Frazier. I know that fight hurt them both, but it needed to happen. It’s a shame the way the two them finished up, two absolute legends, warriors, reduced to shells of themselves. It’s great to see Big George still has all his faculties, despite the punishment he took in his comeback campaign.

Muhammad Ali knew his talent and he was so passionate about it that he risked his life for boxing just like Mike Tyson would say it and to be the greatest boxing of all time. I mean I don’t think anyone can ever take all those punches like he did. Man was focused. Takes me back to the Legend Michael Jackson he would tour and perform for 2 hours for many many concerts. These Legends really loved their work and would die for it. Are you willing to die for something you are passionate about and deliver to your fans ???

"For God so loved the world, that he sent his only begotten son, Jesus, that whoever believes on him shall not perish but have everlasting life. "For God did not send his son to condemn the world but to save it' John 3 : 16,17. These words are words that can lead us to God and everlasting life in Heaven. "For all have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God" Romans 3 : 23 Jesus died on the cross , he died, bearing all of our sins, so that we may come to God the father , free of sin and when we die on earth, go to be with God and Jesus in heaven, forever. The alternative is to continue living a life away from the relationship of Jesus and after death, suffering eternal separation in Hell. Come to Jesus. "All that the father giveth me,shall come to me, and him that cometh to me I will in no wise cast out" John 6 : 37 Come to Jesus I beg of you.

@@lazysob2328 Tom, he could throw a punch but the punch didn't have much power. He slapped at the opponent. Of course I wouldn't want to get slapped with it, but power in the hook like, Marciano, Tyson, Tom Morrison, Shavers, Dempsey could lay a guy out. Then people with a jab like Sonny Liston, or Forman, could knock out anyone. Ali won many fights on points by staying away. The Listen fights were very questionable. Sonny appeared to not be in the game. Just didn't look right. Ali thought he hadn't even hit him in the second bout when Liston went down. And the ref stopped the fight. Ali the best ever, depends, he's probably the best defensive not get hit guy and win on points. But as far as brutal punching toe to toe I would rate Dempsey, Marciano, Tyson, Morrison, above.

The way Ali fought had some limitations as he got older and it shows in his 70s fights. Ali was extremely hard to hit in his prime, because of his incredibly, speed, reflexes and dazzling foot speed. As a result he never had to learn to slip punches in the classic way boxers do like Roberto, Duran, Wilfred Benitz, etc. Instead he would move his head backwards to avoid punches, which is a no no in boxing. In this way Ali was very unorthodox but still very effective, as he could get away with it because of his sheer talent. Thus his defensive skills at close range were never particularly good. He relied on covering up, and tying up his opponents. So when he was forced to fight at close range, in his later years, because his legs tired, and as his reflexes, slowed , he was vulnerable to getting hit. You even see it as early as the first Frazier fight. Ali was very hard to beat as long as he could keep moving constantly and staying out of range, but this style of fighting, gets much harder once, a fighter has aged a bit, and if he is not in perfect shape. Both these things affected Ali, as time went on. Increasingly he had trouble getting in shape, and would cut corners, in training, and this would affect his ability to dance, for 15 rounds in the classic Ali, style.
@MegaMkmiller
@MegaMkmiller Жыл бұрын
Yep. Ali's style of fighting is a young man's game. Like San Francisco Giants great Tim Lincecum. Just too difficult as you get older. So Ali wisely spent more time on the big bag to bring up his punching power. Before the Foreman fight he was doing that and sit ups at a 45 degree angle. In 1974 he would have taken out this bum in 4 maybe 5 rounds. Earlier than that, I doubt if the other guy would even want to fight him!

The Honourable Muhammad Ali, A boxer who's like, never will be seen again, he was capable of ending his matches, maybe in the first rounds, but he kept playing with the various boxer's, showing them respect and not wanting to belittle them, he often continued playing along for many rounds, until he felt that the viewing public had got their money's worth, and that the opponent had also felt respected and also comfortable to continue their boxing career's. It's my thought, that all of those lucky enough to have boxed him or had witnessed him with their own eye's and listened to him walk the walk, and talk the talk, must now feel very privileged to have seen a once in a lifetime legend, and must also feel special and maybe even legend's themselves for having seen him or lucky enough to have heard him talk, pearl's of wisdom! Our loss upon losing a legend and our privilege to have witnessed him ourselves, by seeing him close up on TV! Ali wasn't forced to continue fighting. His need to be in the spotlight overrode plain common sense. His health SHOULD have been a priority but when he was told by his personal physician Ferdie Pacheco that he needed to quit Ali fired the man. And YES boxing did in fact cause his condition. He took excessive punishment in many bouts after manilla which directly coincides with his rapid deterioration from the athlete he was in 1974 to the shell of himself he became by the time he fought Spinks. Also he took deliberate punishment in sparring to his body to as he ignorantly felt would " toughen" his organs. This was confirmed by members of his camp. Very foolish strategy. Once the organs deteriorate there's no turning back especially if you're putting them through routine Physical trauma. He took insane punishment in Manilla which aged him. He took punishment from Norton in Yankee Stadium. Took some hits from Lyle THEN Shavers. Then he took a battering from Spinks in their first bout. Add to this his tendency to let himself go in between fights and his personal vices and the poundings in sparring which should not be something an aging fighter engages in at thar point.

Ali looked tired and haggard. You could see the lack of hand speed and punching power. I honestly believe that at this point in Ali’s life he was beginning to exhibit signs of Parkinson’s. By the time he fought Larry Holmes in 1980, Ali was in full onset Parkinson’s, which was why Ali looked so terrible in the ring. Any fight expert will tell you that Ali never should have been in the ring, and for his corner to let him get beat so badly was truly pathetic and disgraceful.

That was 2 and 3 years after Ali beat Foreman and Frazier, I had the greatest admiration for Ali and Frazier but, I think Joe only had 2 more professional fights after he fought Ali in Manilla, yet Ali fought many more yrs and xs! AND he was dancing around in this fight and vs Dunne like the Ali of old!!🙂and when u consider Ali said .'Joe n me went to Manilla as champions, but, we both came back as old men!'☹ and Frazier spent over 5 weeks in intensive care after Manilla, and 4 weeks in intensive care after him and Ali's 1st fight of the century in NY!! AND!! I'm not taking 1 THING away from either man!! Because they both had lion hearts!! AND became the best of friends, in later yrs!! I remember Ali holding Joe's hand in a beautiful photo a few yrs before Joe Died!!☹Joe had a walking stick, and Ali was shaking and his Alzheimer's was realllly starting to get the best of him, hence it was a very bitter sweet photo!

I think Ali should have retired After defeating Frazer. The injury he took in his last battles, especially the one against Holmes, somehow played a major role in his death, according to Hollywood Autopsy doctors. He should have retired sooner.

@@armandovarela5830, this isn't heroic, it is tragic and it was a terrible choice. Using touching quotes won't change anything. The fact remains that He had nothing to prove after beating Joe Frazer and George Foreman. He should have retired once his health started to be affected by Parkinson. He could have lived longer and spent more time with his family.
