I don't care what anyone says, Ali was at his best during the 60's as far as his quickness and the SHARPNESS and accuracy of his jabs, while he was still pretty good in the 70's he had lost a lot of that by then.

The crowd was extremely "pro-Jones" lol... I think its mainly because this was the era of Clay/Ali's career that he fashioned himself the wrestling heel in the vain of Gorgeous George -- it was actually marketing genius, you don't usually draw a crowd like this for a non-championship fight

True. Plus Jones is a hometown guy, from NYC where this took place.

Similar to Sugar Ray Leonard against Dickie Eklund in Massachusetts... Sugar Ray won easily and the decision was roundly booed lol @@BoxingGOATEdits

Doug Jones was a mistake by Alis camp. Stylistically Jones cracked the code to how to beat Ali and this was borne out by A bigger and harder punching Ken Norton later on. Ali had the style of a very rich amateur that thrived because of his natural physical advantages in terms of speed, athleticism and reflex’s. Most of the heavyweight fighters in this era were traditional flatfooted orthodox boxers. Ali could NEVER Defend against a good top tier jab and when you took away or neutralized HIS jab, the weapon which his entire offense was predicated on, he made a lot of mistakes going on the attack. Jones deflected and slipped a lot of Alis jabs here. He put very good defense on Ali and was able to counter punch effectively throughout the bout thanks to Ali consistently dropping his left to his side after he threw it. Ali had mediocre fundamentals especially when it came to defense, primarily relying on his quickness and head movement to carry him through danger. His hands were almost always out of proper position when he went on the offensive and he left his body wide open for counters when he snapped his head back to avoid a shot upstairs. His hands were always down by his sides and he threw uppercuts from the waist which is a no no especially against a top tier counter puncher. It leaves you open for a left hook. Jones had the quickness to match Ali here, something Ali’s other outmatched opponents just did not have. This fight exposed Muhammad to a certain degree in so far as he lacked proper fundamentals, something Ken Norton with the tutelage of Eddie Futch , would expose to a very good deal in all 3 of their bouts. Norton arguably won all 3 bouts. Or at least two of them with one being a draw.

Bad comparison to Norton whom Ali fought almost 10 years later and when he was in decline. Bad mistake by Ali was the first Norton fight when he didn't train properly and took Norton too lightly. If Ali had done the work and won that one Norton would have been an also ran. Ali lost the first and clearly won the second IMHO. The third is the most controversial one and it's hard to say who won that one.

I respectfully disagree. This is about styles and the fundamental flaws In Ali’s game. He had a style that was predicated off of his athleticism, reflexes and ability to maintain distance. He had very poor fundamentals and his STYLE was as I said before more like a very rich amateur style. He relied primarily on his reflexes because the era he came up in was poor in terms of quality opponents who could keep up with him from a speed and agility standpoint. These were b level flatfooted standard fighters who while fundamentally sound in some cases, were not athletic or quick enough to compete with him. Cleveland Williams was a well documented shell of himself, Sonny Liston was already old and inactive to an extent, George Chuvalo was a crude VERY predictable flatfooted face first brawler, Zora Folley was on the other side of his career, Archie Moore was an ancient dinosaur , Floyd Patterson though quick and could match Ali in hand speed, was just too small basically a cruiserweight and coming off of brutal ko losses to Liston, and Ernie Terrell was nothing more than a crude flatfooted big man who while tall and rangy, did not have the skills that a man of his physical capability SHOULD have had. The ONLY fighter that had the tools 🧰 to compete with Muhammad and punch holes in his flawed style was Jones. Jones like Norton understood that TIMING beats SPEED when utilized correctly and that a sound defense and taking away Muhammad’s jab takes away his rhythm and his ability to dictate the ring real estate. Ali was not old when he faced Norton. He was not in decline. He was only 28/29 years old. Yes he had been out of the ring for three years but by the time he faced Norton he had several fights under his belt, was back in fighting trim and regularly fighting. If he didn’t train for Norton properly the 1st time that’s ALIs fault not Kenny. The second time he trained HARD and still caught hell with Norton because Kenny has adjusted to his speed by the midway point of the fight and had again taken away his jab and was able to match him in quickness and anticipate when Ali was going to go on offensive. Ali always dropped his left when he threw it and his right guard was almost never protecting his face. Everytime he threw that left, Kenny anticipated it and caught it in the mitt of his glove all the while shooting his own left simultaneously which had a direct and unimpeded route straight into Ali’s unprotected face. Totally threw Ali off and once he couldn’t get that jab going Muhammad was forced to engage and as the aggressor he was not nearly as effective as he was being the one who was pursued. He made too many mistakes and the leaks in his defense were exposed. This has nothing to do with declining or age but EVERYTHING to do with Muhammad not correcting bad habits and arrogantly relying on his flawed style. instead he ignored taking the advice from Archie Moore a superb technician, on how to defend properly and not waste energy and how to throw without being open for counters. He only succeeded in his first part of his career because the competition was not high quality. Flatfooted old school journeyman who had no business being in the ring with him. Not his fault that he was gifted with outstanding reflexes, coordination, speed and timing that was leagues above the old guard. But with Jones you had the exception and got to see a precursor to HOW to unravel his style and Ken Norton who was just as tall, had the ability, athleticism and jab to compete, took it to a whole other level. Ali would have had problems with Kenny at any stage of his career because he couldn’t figure out how to deal with a counter puncher and he never corrected the mistakes and bad habits he had throughout his entire career. And the man HIMSELF is on record stating he could never really beat or solve Ken Norton. And Angelo Dundee ALWAYS got outcoached by Eddie Futch who was the strategic master mind behind Norton.

@@C.STRIKER-yo7zg Sorry. I can't agree with your analysis. Everyone agrees that post suspension Ali was slower and less mobile than pre-suspension. He was 31 when he fought Norton first time. He would've easily beaten Norton in the 60s. You're right it was Ali's fault in the first fight but Norton fought the second fight with much more confidence because he had beaten Ali. His style certainly caused Ali problems but a 1960s Ali would have had no difficulty with him.

Good points being made, but I would say while Ali's style was unorthodox, he totally made up for it with speed and a supernatural improvising ability. Also he was undeveloped against Jones, they fought a second time and Ali completely dominated (exhibition w head gear but Jones got flurried all night). It's hard to boil down or pigeon hole Ali, like he said "I wrote new pages in the boxing book!". What was seen as ill-advised in his day has subsequently been copied in all divisions after Ali retired. True his 70s opponents were much harder, but look how he defeated them! In his second career! Incredible.

I feel Ali clearly beat Norton technically in their 2nd, but in the third and first just could not figure his awkward style out, he said as much himself later on. But he roundly defeated Frazier, who bulldozed everyone else in the 60s and 70s besides Foreman. 70s Ali had such a larger bag of tricks as his body slowed down, it's inspiring to see how he adapted. Iean you say Liston was old, but Foreman was young, arguably stronger than Liston and destroying everyone including Norton! For Ali to beat Foreman...it seals the deal for me, he is the GOAT
