Ali was the reason I became a boxing fan & a big fan of his at12. I’m 70 now, & continue to enjoy replaying Ali’s videos on YT. Still an exciting fight to watch. Muhammad always said Norton was like a “thorn in his side”. No doubt, aside from Frazier, Kenny was his toughest (trilogy) challenge. May they both Rest In Peace.

Alot of people believe Mr Norton won all three fights. I strongly disagree, Ali looks to be the weaker but it's actually the opposite. He never hammered his opponents visually, but his smooth delivery was lethal. In every fight with Norton he out jabbed him 2 to 1 with pinpoint accuracy ,those points overlooked by most were the key to Alis wins. The 1st fight showed how tough and brave a man Ali was going 15 rounds with a broken jaw. Incredible

@Charles A. Annen - Ali's 1st & 2nd fights with Norton were 12 rounders. 3rd fight for Ali's title was 15 rds. And I agree with your fight analysis. I've watched his 3 fights with Norton frequently over the decades, & actually feel Ali deserved a split decision win in their 1st fight !

Ken Norton, years after the fight, actually said that he broke Ali's jaw in the last round not the first........but he kept quiet for years just because it did make Ali look incredible and Ken had a ton of respect for, and appreciated Ali.

I scored the fight 6-4-2 Ali, with Norton winning their Trilogy. Ali seemed to have developed a fear of Norton after losing the first fight, suffering a broken jaw. And Norton approached the last two fights with Ali as such, believing he had a physical and psychological edge, with no fear of Ali at all. And believing Ali couldn’t hurt him in his aggressive pursuit to impose his will.

I think Ali Won the first 6 rounds. His jab was deadly and way too active. Norton got a 10-8 round in the 7th. But I had this fight 8-4 maybe 7-5 if you give Norton a 10-8 for the 7th. Which i think is borderline. This fight wasn't as close as the scorecards. In no universe did Norton win this fight. He did land the heavier punches but Ali scored too many points with his jabs.

With so much trouble he had every fight against Norton I'm still baffled how the f*ck was he able to beat Foreman the next year after this who was still in his prime compared to the older Ali. The same Foreman who destroyed Norton just six months later.

Their styles are very interesting together. Ali found Norton's style awkward and troublesome, as did Holmes. It's difficult to hit Norton with the jab, which are both Ali's and Holmes' primary weapons. You can see also that Norton finds Ali's style extremely frustrating. Norton's hooks at close range look so dangerous. Not surprising he broke Ali's jaw.

Norton won 2 of the fights. i am reviewing this. round 9 ..., and these guys are tired. Norton credited his success as a boxer ... and father to his practice of positive thinking which he said changed his life. well, you gotta walk the talk and in an interview later with Kenny he thanked Ali for all their fights. Now, ... that is walking the talk. Ken and Ali knew that Norton won at least two of the three fights. God bless all these wonderful warriors .

When it came to beating a champion and taking his title Norton missed it by a gnats ass; Ali's punches were deadly accurate and you could visibly see them effect Norton. You could see Ali's command of the fight. They not going to just give you the Champs title, get him to the canvas, cut and swell his eyes and head up. Norton failed to do that, he broke Ali's jaw and Ali still went the distsnce.

@@aarondigby5054 hi Aarondigby. I hear what you say but disagree. I actually remember the 1976 fight. It was shown on UK terrestrial TV and attracted a huge audience. Practically everybody in the UK from pro boxers, commentators, fight fans agreed Norton was robbed. Huge calls for him to retire over here. The truth was it was not “politically correct” for Ali to lose. Stories started to appear exclusively in the US to explain the result ie that well Norton did take the title from the Champion etc or that Norton didn’t knock Ali out therefore Ali gets to keep the title. To British ears and most American ear (at the time) this was utter nonsense.

For some reason Ali seemed to underestimate Norton and the fights ended up really close, Ali was a masterful gamesmanship and bluffer, you couldn't really tell if he was actually hurt like he'd claim to be. Earnie Shavers said that when he fought Ali that when he had Ali in trouble he didn't want to rush Ali suddenly because Ali would bait you.

Ali won this fight. Period. Even though it was close. Ali’s Shots have been clearer and when they’ve landed, they’ve hurt Norton visibly, meanwhile Norton’s shots didn’t hurt Ali at all beside one body shot, even though the commentator said every round „Ali is hurt“ no no my friend, u can’t hurt Ali that easily, even if u have landed a perfect shot. 7-5 for Ali. @@brucescott4261 well yeah not underweight but maybe a little light for his age at 31. 212 was great in the 60's but Ali naturally got bigger as he got older in boxing. 212 was about his weight against Liston nearly 10 years earlier. Light isn't always right. 217-220 would've been perfect for Ali in this fight

@@norrismulgrew859 I wouldn’t say his ass kicked like the first fight. But that one was more closer than people think. I still had Ali winning only bc In ANY Heavy weight Championship, the goal is to take the championship by hurting him, out scoring him or knocking him out. Joe Frazier could do that but Norton didn’t return as much as Frazier, so it made it even harder to score. But bc he never BEAT Ali like he did in 73’ I still gave it to Ali. Damn close fight but you gotta beat beat the champ.

Deserved win.

Ali wasn't convinced that he won and the fight was very hard for him. Bundini was annoying him a bit getting too close, Ali wanted room to breathe. I think Ali was just a bit agitated overall so he shoved Bundini twice, then threw a punch at him. Surprised me as well, I remember that from way back then. That fight was 49 years ago, doesn't seem possible.

Ali's punches are trademark feather light. They can cut & slice opponents but certainly not powerful to knock out. On the contrary, Norton packs power in his punches & his upper cuts & round house hooks can be dangerous. Even with his exhibition type punches, Ali could have ended the fight in round 6. To the disappointment of we his fans, Ali trailed off into siesta in the heat of battle. Of the 2 great athletes, Kenny Norton is the better finisher & businessman. Ali is the ultimate entertainer

One commentator explained that there are 4 criteria used to determine the winner of a round. He gave Ali the first 2 rounds based upon ring generalship, boxing, defense and punching power. That's what most say about scoring a fight, those 4 categories are the tools used. I think it's ridiculous. They don't consider how many punches were landed? This guy said nothing about which fighter lands the most punches, how ignorant. I score based solely on punches landed. Do the people come to see ring generalship and defense, or do they want to see one guy beat the hell out of the other? Is it more effective to hit your opponent more times than he hits you, or to have someone use categories to decide? What are they talking about? The categories they use most often are different than the 4 this guy mentioned, usually there's 5 but regardless, each of those categories are important for what reason? What do those individual things add up to? They contribute to how many punches each guy lands. Better defense means the guy got hit less often. Ring generalship should put you in better position to land punches, keeps the opponent off-balance making it more difficult for him to land punches. They all factor into the bottom line, which is landed punches. Despite that, according to this guy, they don't give consideration to which guy landed more punches. Using only the 4 categories, I'd like the guy to go into detail to explain how you determine who won a given round. He uses 4 categories, obviously there would be many rounds in which each fighter won 2 of the categories, then what? A jump ball at center court, a coin flip maybe? That's all a bunch of shit. Only punching power should be considered other than the number of punches landed by each. Otherwise, 1 guy could land twice as many but potentially lose the round based on some goofy formula that's not easy to translate. Is one category worth more than another? Using that system alone would result in 90% controversial outcomes, and how could anyone argue the matter? If this guy uses those 4 categories alone, wouldn't most rounds be the same between 2 fighters with a set way of fighting? For example, in this fight is Norton ever going to win the ring generalship category with Ali constantly on the move? Is Ali going to win the category of punching power? How could he, they have whatever power they have and that doesn't change, save for getting tired. It's an absurd method that I'll never accept as efficient. If Ali lands 10 power shots and 3 jabs, he wins that round on my card if Norton lands 5 power shots and 4 jabs. Simple, pertinent and fair. I give one full point for a power punch, which are left or right hooks, straight left or right shots to the head and uppercuts. I give a half point for jabs and body shots. No points if a punch is low, to the kidney or back of the head, or for barely grazing punches. No points if a punch lands on an arm, that's considered a blocked punch. Very easy, just count each type, power punch or not, then add them up. How can anyone argue if the numbers show one guy landed more in a given round?

If Ali had instead fought Jose Luis Garcia in July the only man to beat Norton at that point prior to fighting Ken again in September he would've beat Norton more easily but he did hurt Norton in the 6th, the 11th and the 12th round if only he went for the ko

I always liked Ali when he was younger. This fight I saw Norton winning all the way. Broadcasters biased towards Ali. Norton more aggressive and landed more harder punches not called by broadcasters. Ali constantly running away, holding and putting glove around Nortons neck pulling him down then pushes away every time Norton corners him. Ali always holds and holds necks. Judges should prevent that and deduct points. Bad split decision call and Victory for Ali. Norton won this fight!
