That knockout was a thing of beauty. Blin's out on his feet and doesn't even know it. He tries to take a step back, and his legs give out. He had taken several hard shots in the 30-45 seconds prior to that, and was already a little wobbly. That last shot just connected perfectly, and Blin was done.

He tagged Ali many times but I have to give it to Ali for his courage he never backed away from those onslaughts and showed courage. Most casual fans don't realize the range of small movements Ali used to keep opponents off-balance, second guessing whether to punch, where to punch; his shots came with so little set-up, on the beat, off the beat, that otherwise excellent fighters all said he was nearly impossible to figure out - and most of this was after the unjust three year separation from the sport which cost him his reflexes. People will often say he had no punching power, or that it looks like he's slapping. But Ali frequently did something which gave his punches the ability to separate opponents form their senses and/or motor control - the sudden twist at the end of a seemingly innocuous cross or hook. Watch one of the highlight reels of his KO's. Otherwise durable fighters tended to freeze in place, collapse where they stood, as if electrocuted. It is a different kind of force than we're used to from a big, powerful fighter. Imagine a small stone, traveling twice as fast as a large one, but spinning when it hits its target. Compare that to being clubbed with a big rock, or an actual club. Neither is pleasant. But if you've been in the ring, hit by a muscled powerful but slower dude, and also by a speed demon with great accuracy and the ability to land when you don't have time to react, you'll know just how different the effect is. The men he made look incompetent were among the best heavyweights in history. Every meaningful heavyweight of his generation were in the ring with him, and he beat all, except Holmes....and Holmes fought Ali when Ali was symptomatic with Parkinsons and heavily medicated. Only a few spotted his few weaknesses; Ali made sure to rematch his TOUGHEST opponents, and beat ALL of them in rematches. Want an education in Ali, and the intricacies of the sport? It was too physically taxing to box with Ali. He was bigger and had a longer reach than most of the heavyweights and his agility permitted him to throw the jab from every angle, which gave him a reach advantage even against men his size. And then he had the stamina. The big guys couldnt chase him around for long and the smaller guys, that could chase him, had to eat several jabs to the face to maybe land a single punch on him and be in a constant head movement motion that ate up precious energy. Meanwhile, he was just throwing the flicking jab moving backwards, winning rounds, conserving energy. If he saw his man in trouble he'd move in for the kill, if the man fought back, Ali would again move to safety zone. If someone caught him with a good punch, Ali would hug him and push him back. Other than Frazier, Marciano and very early Tyson I cant imagine of any other fighters in the history of heavyweight division that had the combination of characteristics to take Ali into deep and uncertain waters. You needed superhuman stamina, ability to take punishment, and very high workrate to alternate crippling his midsection with bombs in the head. Then of course you could have the odd ones like Norton, against whom I doubt Ali ever won a round convincingly. Norton had superb stamina, very long hands and developped a specific defense to mess up with Ali's jab, which in turn messed up his whole rythm.

@@nickfanzo Thermonuclear MORONS! Ali's genius talent was beyond question by 1964. Sonny Liston was a terrifying destroyer, and Ali's fearlessness and movement in the ring made Liston look foolish. Good lord.

I've just watched that ending three times and byron elenica is right: Ali could have gone in to finish him off but he pulls his punches and then the ref steps in. Ali always treated his vanquished with respect. Just watch the end of his defeat of Zora Folley in '67, I think Ali's last fight before his imprisonment. Ali is the greatest of all time.
@tonyanderton35214 жыл бұрын
@David Mc Nice joke - Blin / Blind. I appreciate your feedback but - I don't know, I think it's debatable - I don't think that Ali was going in to "destroy" (your word) Blin. After the two jabs then the right that knocks Blin back on to the ropes, Ali hesitates slightly, he know's that Blin is finished. He respects a courageous opponent. Compare with the Ali v Brian London fight. Now that's going in to destroy an opponent!

Never seen this fight or heard of Blin before. Blin could duck and weave, but he swings wide and lunges, loosing his balance.The punches that did connect did not seem to have sting and power like Ali's do. Also, Blin looks like a smaller fighter. Like he is fighting above his weight class.
