Rafi sahab is the king or badshah and will remain for ever , Mehdi Hassan sahab is the master of Ghazals with all its finer nuances. Also, a lot of credit should go to all the great Indian music directors who explored Rafi sahab's talent with variety of songs which I think Pakistani film industry lacked.

He could sing each song in many ways according to looks and style of the actor. i heard he had bleeding throat during high notes of a song. However, Mehdi Hasan was the best Ghazal Singer ever born

Rafi Sahab was far ahead... Mehndi Hasan had a subdued voice suitable only for ghazals and low pitched soft songs...for flamboyant songs even our Kishore Kumar far outstripped Mehndi Hasan...! Any fast number that Mehndi Hasan sang Kishore Kumar would have sung it much better...and Rafi Sahab...he was the singing Colossus...the singing Atlas... playback singing was given its true meaning by the Singer of the millennium Mohammed Rafi Sahab...!

Rafi Sahab was far far better than everyone because what he could do with ease no other singer could do with lots of hardwork and difficulty. Rafi Sahab could easily sing like kishore kumar,mehdi hassan, Nusrat fateh ali khan if he wanted to but no body could sing like him. But he was such a humble and unassuming soul that he never disrespected anybody. In fact just by depth of talent he possessed ,it is very difficult to believe today that he was a human. He was voice of God.

Both were very gifted singers.Mehdi Hassan was primarly a Ghazal singer par excellence while Rafi sahib was a versatile geet singer.Rafi sahib was better at film songs but Mehdi Hassan had few peers in non film ghazals…I saw both performers and the contrast was evident…when you come to a concert by Mehdi Hassan you feel you are at a royal darbar…Rafi sahib reminded me of a faqir who sang in streets…his songs in the film Dosti defy description…simply amazing.I salute both and love both equally.

There is absolutely no justified comparision between the two legends as they are both excellent in their own genre of singing: Menhdi Hassan in the field of ghazals and rafi saheb in the field of playback singing. Menhdi Hassan surpasses all in ghazal singing but does not have the versatility of Rafi saheb.rafi saheb could sing a wide variety of songs and he also had the range .M.Hassan had limited range and he would have had difficulty in singing the high-pitched songs that Rafi saheb sang with relative ease. Can you imagine MHassan singing for Shammi Kapoor :aasmaan se aaya farishta or chahe koyi mujhe junglee kahe-songs which are out of MHassans vocal range but yes MHassans voice is ideal for ghazals and sounds pleasant to the ears.
