❤❤I copied a Japanese netizen's answer (because in Chinese, those words have the same meaning as in Japanese): Let me explain the "Mu" in Muichiro. First things first, we Japanese write it “無”in Chinese characters, and it means no, nothing, or naught in Japanese. In this episode Yuichiro said "The 'Mu' in Muichiro stands for 'incompetence' and 'meaningless'" he also said "the 'Mu' in Muichiro stands for 'Infinity'" at last. In Japanese, each of them are written for"無能-Munou” "無意味-Muimi" and "無限- Mugen" Let's change the word to make it easier to understand. "Incompetence" to "No talent" "Meaningless" to "No meaning" "Infinity" to "No limit" You can see the word "No" in all of them, but it still means negative in first two and positive in another. It is same in Japanese too. Same word in opposite meaning. It's literally playing on words. It's hard to give a 100% accurate explanation in my second language, but I hope it's useful for you to make sense and have fun with Demon Slayer :) sorry for the long sentences by the way

Easily my favorite episode of the season so far!! Regarding the "Mu" in "Muichirou", it's complicated but I'll try to explain it in a simple way. Muichirou's name is written with three characters as: 無一郎 (mu + ichi + rou)... The last two characters combined (ichi+rou) can mean "a man, a young man or a son". This combination is commonly used for boys names. The first character "Mu" (無) means "Nothingness/Emptiness", and when it's combined with other words it can mean something like "Not" or "un-/in-". For example: -[Munou]: "nou" means "competence". "Mu+nou" means "Incompetence". -[Muzan]: "zan" here means "something you feel mercy/pity for". "Mu+zan" means "Merciless". So fitting for M.J right? :) -[Mugen Train]: "gen" here means "limit/end". "Mu+gen" means "Limitless/Infinity". The movie is called "Infinity Train". In the beginning of the episode, Muichirou's brother was telling him" "The Mu in your name is the same Mu used in "Munou" (incompetence) and "Muimi" (meaningless). He was basically telling him: You are "A man with nothing" (no competence, no meaning, etc.), so don't try to become something by helping others or becoming a swordsman, Helping others can only be done by Chosen Ones. At the end though, it was made clear that his brother was saying all that to protect him, and as he dies he said: "The Mu in Muichirou is the same Mu used in "Mugen" (Limitless/Infinity). So basically, Muichirou is "A man with Infinity" or "A man with No Limit". That's why, he is a Chosen One that can help others without limit. This was the last sentence in the episode! This is so beautiful because Muichirou without his memories was truly "a man with Nothing", we were not sensing anything out of him. But now, he is "a man with No Limit". I'm so exited to see this version of him!! I hope it wasn't very long XD.

So I interpret it as Yuichiro being the first born and becoming the son who exists and Muichiro being born second and being considered the lower of the 2 thus not existing. A lot of ppl have already explained it but I’ll give it my go to make it simple: 無　Mu negates whatever follows/precedes. It’s the equivalent of un-, in-, non-, -less in English. MUgen is IN-finity, or limit-LESS, UN-limited MUnou is UN-skilled. MUimi is meaning-LESS The Mu in Muichiro, his brother Yuichiro said, is the Mu in Mugen (limitless, unlimited. It speaks to his ability to unleash unlimited power for the sake of someone else, as explained by his brother and father. Muzan is a little different because the word itself derives from Buddhism, meaning : breaking rules without remorse. Today it’s used as “cruel.”

Fun fact: Muichiro was a little nerfed in the anime in this part, in manga he doesn't need from the mark to save Kotetsu and kill the fishes, he never believes he won't make it in time bc he has no strenght bc of the poison, he instantly saves him, kills the fishes by instinct and then gets the mark. Tiny change, but works as a fun fact.

Hi, first of all i'd like to say love the reaction and energy from the both of you. There is an anime i would love to see your reaction. Have heard of an anime called 86? its a anime with the main theme of realism of war. Although its in a semi mecha genre, but its not focus on big mecha fight like the gundam series. Its more focus on its story, insane character development and world building. There is a lot of foreshadowing and symbolism in this anime, not to mention the fantastic music. There are small fight here and there but it was short and straight to the point type and when there's a big fight, its a big epic fight. Its a roller coaster of emotion. It might be start alittle bit slow on the first 2 episode for the build up, but it pick up later in the season. Happy to see you react to it.

Interesting point about the manga- the English translations of the “mu in muichiro” scenes, emphasizes that he’s comparing his brothers name to things like “insignificant” or “incompetent”. Usually in English the use of “in” in front of the word leads it to negative connotations. But the “mu in muichiro is the in, in infinity” hits much harder when you pick up on that. (So the anime slips up by just saying the mu in muichiro is infinity, rather than the “in”, in infinity)

The thing is that the names in japanese don't use silent vowels - like in te ,we say it like te in 'taste' but saying it with our tongue on our teeth instead of rolling our tongue. In same way, ma,mi,mu,mo are pronounced like the words maa,mist,moo and monster respectively. In some cases, the vowel u can be silent. There are almost no words which are said normally without vowel except for m/n.
