This was back when the stegosaurus herds were just starting to thin out and Moby Dick was a minnow. Hard my two best jobs in New Orleans. In the '70s and '80s I was one of the few white buggy drivers. I even wound up living in the Back o' Town a block away from where Jelly Roll Morton grew up, though the house was no longer there. Then in the '90s I went to sea from the Seafarer's International Union on Jackson Ave. It was great to travel the world and come back to a city that many chose for vacation between ships. Used to catch Roosevelt Sykes at the Leaf a lot. Professor Longhair was on the board at Tipitina's and played there all the time. Every year at Jazz Fest the great musicians that lived locally and the legends that were still touring, like Muddy Waters and Nina Simone played the Fest. I listen to all kinds of music, I don't write off genres, if I tap my foot to it then I like it. My Spotify library looks like it's owned by several people. Same goes for my record collection. But this has a special place in my heart. Old delta blues, the grainy recordings from the 20s and 30s and the sheer skill it takes to play. I saw Muireann on Jool's Holland Hootenanny and became a fan immediately. This young lady has some real skill to play like this and sing. I can just about get through a bastardised version of 32-20 Blues but I have to put a lot of practice into my travis/hybrid picking, and that's without having to sing as well!! For any non-guitarists here just enjoying the music, Muireann is basically having to divide her brain into three playing the melody, maintaining the constant bass note and singing beautifully - and then having it tie back together as one thing. Can't wait for future releases from this talent!
