This is an educational video that I want to share. I stabilized and edited the original video that I posted.
If you look at my nature videos you can see that I try to show extraordinary and beautiful things, even in harsh conditions. Last year, I was on a Safari at Masai Mara National Park in Kenya this year for the “Great Wildebeest Migration”. Every year during the season of the Great Migration the zebras must risk crossing many rivers to get to the grass that they badly need in order to survive. If the zebras do not get to their food they can die. Sometimes, after crossing a river full of hungry crocodiles, the zebras do not find good grass on the other side of the Mara River. Then they will turn around and go back through the same river to face the vicious crocodiles all over again.
My video shows the amazing and strong will to live of the animals of Masai Mara National Reserve. I am happy that many of my viewers have picked up on this.
I was watching from our truck on the Kenyan side of the Mara River while filming the video. The zebras were running across the river to the Tanzanian side to eat the grass there.
It was very difficult to watch and witness in person. I did feel very bad for the suffering that the zebra went through. In no way do I wish to disrespect this zebra by showing its' end. She was so very strong, she took on 4 crocodiles and was still standing. I will never forget how hard this zebra wanted to live and did not give up easily. It makes me feel an even greater respect for life and all living things. Life is so fragile and precious. This happens every day in the wild where no one can see the intense struggle to live that goes on. There have been many comments suggesting the baby zebra did not feel a lot of pain due to adrenaline. However, I believe it must have been excruciating. Masai Mara National Reserve, like many of the wild places left in this world, is beautiful and harsh. It was hard to watch the zebra fight and do nothing. However, there was no way I could have intervened to save the Zebra from her fate. The Masai Mara National Reserve in Kenya does not permit interference and no guns are allowed into the National park.
I am not a professional photographer. I basically just pulled my cell phone out of my pocket and started recording. But it does make the footage even more amazing that it got so many millions of views. National Geographic would love to get such video. I'm sure they carry around tens of thousands of dollars of equipment. I did not have an expensive camera like large professional productions use. There was also a lot going on during the filming. The wind was blowing, and we had been waiting out in the sun for many, many hours. I was kind of exhausted and sort of balancing on the top of the truck. There was nowhere to put a camera stand. Every breath I took shook the phone. At times I was holding my breath for long periods trying not to move the phone/camera. I actually could not even see what I was shooting at because of the sun. I was just recording blindly in the direction of the action. Only afterwards when I was looking closely at the video did I clearly see what I had filmed.

This type of Safari is called a "Game Drive". The local African guide in this video that I used was a tribal man named Johnathan Lenjir. Jonathan took me to see this amazing zebra attack by crocodiles. Johnathan is a Maasai Warrior from the Maasai tribe in Kenya. Johnathan Lenjir would be happy to take you on this very same safari in Africa. He is very affordable.

🦓 Hello, I was the one who filmed the video. I was on top of a Safari vehicle while filming this video in Kenya. I was shooting the video out of the roof of the truck. You cannot leave the vehicle or you will probably be attacked by an animal. If you need to use the toilet you have to be driven somewhere safe. Animals are waiting in the tall grass everywhere and will jump out and attack you. Also, I hired a great guide who was protecting me. My guide was always looking to protect me. Typically, the animals will not jump into the truck to attack you. As long as you stay inside of your vehicle you are pretty much safe. We had to wait inside of the vehicle for many hours for the zebras to finally decide to cross the Mara River into Tanzania. Thank you for watching!

Comment section full of absolute idiots trying to impose their concept of morality onto wild animals. This is nature; this sort of thing happened for millions of years before humans evolved the ideas of cruelty and kindness. It will continue to happen long after we are gone. Nature doesn’t care what we think, it just goes on. Absolute arrogance to think our opinions matter in the slightest to the animals for whom this is just another day. Can’t believe people actually choose to click on these sorts of videos then have the gall to whine and cry in the comments about how awful they think reality is. Why watch it? If you hate it so much, why engage with it in any way? All you are doing is teaching the KZbin algorithm that these sorts of clips get you engaged. It is life. It is death. It is nature. It happens every day whether we notice or not.

I agree. If the crocodiles all starve and die it will throw off the balance of nature. It would have tragic consequences. Yeah, either the zebra dies with a few minutes of extreme pain, or the crocodile dies with many weeks or months of pain caused by starvation. So nature has an ethical dilemna which it has solved by saying 'It's just luck! There's just a chance of either the predator dying or the prey dying. But one of them must die. "

🦓Instinctively, the herd of zebras actually want their population to be lowered. Somehow, the herd of zebras know that they must control their population because there is not enough food for them all to eat. The herd of zebras purposely cross the river over and over again, so the weak zebras and sick zebras are taken out by the crocodiles. This is how evolution works. The herd of zebras will turn around and cross the river again so even more of their numbers will be thinned out. It may seem harsh, but this is how nature works. It is survival of the fittest.

Seeing it trying to fight back with half of its face gone has me feeling terrible. Nature is just terrifying, and survival instincts really are something else.

In her last moments that little zebra looked up and stared into my eyes. I will never forget that moment. I wanted to help, but I knew i would get killed. Our eyes connected in those final seconds before her suffering finally ended. I believe the soul of that legendary zebra lives on in me. I carry the memory of her final battle. SHe took on 5 giant crocodiles. Even with her muzzle gone she remained standing and fought for life till the end.

I understand exactly how you feel, and my heart goes out to that Zebra. She suffered a horrific and painful death. Everything on this planet works in cycles, and biosystems, large and small, have to balance out. I may not be popular for giving this comment, but you have to understand, crocodiles and alligators are predators that keep the population of animal groups with much higher birth rates in check, maintaining that balance that nature needs to keep functioning properly. All that being said, don't ever even think of interfering with the process of nature and causing a man-made imbalance. Jason Wampler

Crocodiles can go for several months without eating. In extreme cases, they can go 3 years without eating anything! They conserve their energy by staying motionless or moving slow.

There have been many comments suggesting a bridge be built for the zebras to cross the river I understand your sympathy for the zebra. However, the other side of the river is the country of Tanzania. So, it would have to be an international bridge between the countries of Kenya and Tanzania. Also, the Masai Mara wildlife park is trying to stay as natural as possible without creating man-made structures such as bridges. In addition, there are many other rivers the zebras must cross to get to their food source. Should there be bridges built everywhere for the zebras to use? You would need to build a bridge every few hundred feet for hundreds of miles. Even then the animals might not choose to even use the bridge. The Crocodiles can also lay and wait on top of bridges too. Kenya is a 3rd world county with many other issues that should take priority over building bridges for zebras. Also, if the crocodiles all starve and die it will throw off the balance of nature. It would have tragic consequences. I know people believe zebras are cute and most people don't find crocodiles to be beautiful. That doesn't mean that crocodiles are evil and zebras are good. Thank you for watching.
