Varten, in NJ we have a diner classic called “disco fries.” The dish consists of French fries covered in brown gravy and cheese, usually mozzarella, but the cheese can vary. It’s the NJ version of Canada’s poutine.

in Australia we have our own version of poutine except we just put normal grated cheese on top of our gravy and chips. we can get them at some our local fish & chip places. my local fish&chip places sells chips cheese and gravy in a five and ten dollar boxes

You are correct about America having it's own version of poutine, it's called disco fries with shredded mozzarella instead of the cheese curds. But some places closer to the Canadian border do have the true poutine fries. I grew up in the Adirondack mountains so we were 45 minutes south of Canada and yes I would get poutine or disco fries at the diner or whenever with a side of popcorn chicken especially if it was a drunken night out at 3am lol
