Of all the Renaissance era films, Mulan was easily the darkest, violent and most tragic story. The last musical number of the film, "A Girl Worth Fighting For", ends with this bloody scene of a massacre and reminds audiences just how devastating war truly is.
@dontrefertome31614 жыл бұрын
it ties with the Hunchback of Notre Dame since both present very real and current issues, although HoND is a little more explicit with it's themes since they carry out through out the whole movie; whereas Mulan really only has a couple scenes before switching back to something goofy lol

Teether Geaver, and because that “A Girl Worth Fighting for” is the last musical number of the film, that means from this point forward, those kid-friendly gloves come off once the real dark side of war starts to kick in.

#Sweet-but-psycho Actually the last song of the film is a short reprise of “I’ll Make A Man Out Of You.” It just wasn’t recorded for the official soundtrack.

@@dontrefertome3161 I find the "goofy" scene serves well to contrast and make this dark scene even more brutal. It contrasts the high-spirited enthusiasm of fresh recruits seeking glory with the harsh nature and reality of war. And it of course, contrasts the "girl worth fighting for" as the potential wife during their march, and as the little girls with their dolls who won't make it if they fail.

I was Shang I would've just killed Chi Fu instead and left his body under the snow. It's not like anyone would've found out. They were in the middle of nowhere with zero witnesses aside from the other soldiers who all agree to not say anything, there's no way they could've done tests and they could just easily lie by saying Chi Fu got killed by the Huns. I think a lot of people miss how the scene with the burned village ties to "A girl worth fighting for" The "girls" the men are fighting for are mostly with women. Wives, people who will cook for them, love them, see them as heroes. This wouldn't appeal to Mulan, so who is she fighting for? The question is answered with the next scene. The girl worth fighting for, to Mulan, are little girls killed by the actions of grown men in war... It also ties in with that early scene of the distressed little girl and the little boy with the sword taking her doll, and Mulan swooping in to return the doll. Same thing but on a greater scale, higher stakes

When you really break this down, the song "A Girl worth Fighting For" probably couldn't have been more perfectly placed than RIGHT BEFORE this scene. These were young men. Young, eager, unaware, ignorant, and more, can deacribe why they didn't understand what was really going on. Heck, they were just trained enough so they can fight, let alone win a war. So, with their youth and excitement to be seen as the heroes of their own stories, they were daydreaming and just goofing around, only to be then smacked HARD with the reality of what they were really involved in: a war that has killed so many people and left nothing in its wake intact, like a monstrous storm. In fact, if you watch the movie carefully, beyond the callback to "To Be a Man", there's no musical numbers once this scene plays, a clever way to portray that things got VERY real for everyone real quick.

This scene hit me more than I thought back then. When we get to the scene of a village razed to the ground, we found all homes burned to ashes, no survivors, and numerous corpses of soldiers who died serving Shang's father against the Hun's attack of the village. There's almost no dialogue here, just the looks of Mulan's, Mushu's and the soldiers horrified, crestfallen, and possibly shell-shocked faces of the massacre's aftermath before them. THAT is what Wars are really like, guys. " In war, whichever side may call itself the victor, there are no winners, but all are losers."
