Male Mulan: Forced by society to be part of the army and a 'strong man', even tho he would much rather dress up and do things society sees as 'girly' basically he would be similar to Eugene from the Try guys, just in a more ancient time Edit: Holy fuck, can you guys chill out maybe??? I am curious as to how the story is if the gender was to be switched. Most people would think that "Mulan" would rather dress up and do things as "girly" but I kinda think it's a bit deeper than that. I believe it involved with this music alone. Theoretically, I believe "Mulan" was raised in a certain that he was supposed to "belong" in a society that he is supposed to play his part as it is his duty. How he should act, behave, etc as it could be that he doesn't feel it reflects off of who he is on the inside. (Just like how Mulan feel she may not reflect as the perfect bride) You can think of it in short of a stereotype of how "men shouldn't cry" or "men shouldn't show feelings as it shows weakness" sort of thing.
@icebear11384 жыл бұрын
Everyone wants genderbent Mulan to be into crossdressing and doing for feminine things but that wouldn't fit. Mulan didn't have a secret desire to dress as a man. She wanted to make her family proud, to protect them, and to have her voice heard. I think what you were talking about is much more fitting. Society puts these crazy pressures on men and woman and right now, a lot of people want forget about what those pressures were like for men.
@Kg01.4 жыл бұрын
@@icebear1138 Yeah and not to hate on the idea of "transgender" but I think people just think the idea of it is "cute and original" and keep pushing it rather than seeing what the original intentions actually were.
@Ikajo4 жыл бұрын
@@Kg01. Transgender is a real thing that real people are. So, keep that in mind.
@Ikajo4 жыл бұрын
I agree. There is a bit of an issue with gender stereotyping that comes into play. You don't have be transgender to feel uncomfortable in the role thrust upon you by society. Heck, I'm a woman and no-one would call me girly. So, I can emphasise with someone feeling out of place in their own role.
@Kg01.4 жыл бұрын
@@Ikajo I never once said transgender is a “fake” thing. I only merely said that people tend to overshadow the whole “gender-swap” idea that really other than maybe a few tweaks here and there for story wise. All and all it’s just the same thing but swapped genders. The whole reason why Mulan dressed up and acted as a solider is because she wanted to protect her father and her family. Not only this but she felt she doesn’t see herself fit to be the “perfect bride” as that’s what her role is supposed to be. So in reality she just wanted her voice to be heard. So if we were to swap genders per-say. I would likely imagine that the “Malun” (I’m just gonna call the “boy mulan” as “Malun”) would be for his whole life trained to serve a role as a solider. However he felt he isn’t fit to be one. However in the movie it did show they’re willing to take every *male* off the family. So I would imagine that in order for Malun to protect his father he would first get the letter then so desperately hide it from his father and go out there alone giving an excuse that his father is too ill to be at war.
@myheartwillstopinjoy81424 жыл бұрын
Mulan - Male version of the story by me Ever since he was a child, Mulan (lets keep this name because I don't have any idea for a male name) was a warm and sensitive boy. His family and everyone who knew him found him to be extremely kind and generous. Every time he could, the little boy would help out the poor and comfort anyone who was sad. He'd also often play with children who he loved and who loved him back. One day, the huns attack and the emperor makes it mandatory upon a man from each family to join the army. Mulan is terrified, for he knows he's the only man in the family besides his ill father. But the thing is, the young man was never good at fighting with swords or throwing arrows. He was always the last one in races and fellow young men teased him for it. He knows for sure that if he was to go to war, he'd never come back home to his family. He's in the midst of an internal struggle, when he heard footsteps; it's his father, walking with difficulty to announce that he would be the man that would fight and die for his honor and for the emperor. The night comes, and at the dinner table, no one is speaking. Mulan knows all too well that his family is disappointed. He knows he's not the perfect son, and he knows that even if his father was to die at war, he wasn't enough of a man to take care of his mother and grandmother. He looks at the table and sees with surprise that a tear dropped on his clenched fist. Even sadder, the boy wonder how can he not hold in tears as would do a real strong man. It's enough for him, and he looks at his father. - I will go, father. I will go to war in our family's name. -You aren't ready to fight, son. I'd rather have you stay here than die there. He tried to argue and convince his father, but nothing works. Even his own father doesn't believe he's string enough to be there. He gets up from the table and leaves, feeling worthless, even more than all the times he dropped to the floor after just a punch from his friends, even more than when he was called a weak little girl... All night, he can't sleep, only thinking of when he'd have to say Farwell to his father at dawn. He cries a few times, and dries his own tears with anger. Then he decides. While all the family is sleeping, the young man steals his father's war uniform, and takes the horse. - I'll bring honor to my family.

Mulan always knew that his gender meant an automatic obligation to carry on his father's legacy. But he grew up less inclined to being a warrior and was more attracted to his mother's dresses and make-up. He wanted to be a Dan performer, but Mulan knew that in doing so would bring shame to his family. However as he goes through training under his Captain Shang the young man learns that the Huns have planted a spy among a trope of female and effeminate male Dan performers. Said performers will be going to perform before the Emperor of China - at which point the spy will strike. But there's no way to tell who's who. Seeing a chance to act on his affinity for girly things Mulan trades in his sword and armor for a fancy umbrella and embroidered robe, for only he can get into the trope without detection and find out who the spy Hun is. The only problem is pulling off this solo mission and still performing his duties as a soldier without making Captain Shang suspicious.

I always felt the song reflection could be interpreted as a song for trans guys (and girls but it would be less straightforward) because even though that obviously isn't the intention of the song for the movie, a lot of the lyrics are things trans men can relate to. Not gonna lie: this caused instant crying in me, deep, long, and needed. I've had a mixed relationship with the Mulan movie, because when I was younger I did a solo of "I'll Make a Man Outta You" for high school. Which was great when I thought I was a dude. Not so much with realizations I only finally managed to fully see through as an adult. Realizations that took far longer than they should have because every time I approached them as a child they were constantly obscured by one issue or another, and my mental health was never stable enough to get a clear picture. And yet I'd always had an attachment to this song, as if it spoke to me, but not *quite* spoke to *me.* Like it meant something, or should have meant something, but I wasn't the audience for it. And then as I grew older and joined trans communities, and met my husband who is a trans man, I realized who it was for. Regardless of the original intent of the writers, the song is, more or less, a *perfect* song for trans *men.* For him, when he heard that song in 1998 at only 8 years old, it crystalized *everything.* He knew who he was after that and it took him a long time to get his family to acknowledge it and help him. Which left me wishing that trans *women* could have such a song too, because I feel like if I'd had a similar epiphany at a younger age, maybe I'd be in a better place right now. (Or maybe not. I grew up in mostly conservative type areas where, especially in the early 2000s, I could have been killed going to high school in a dress.) Of course I considered listening to male versions of this song, but I never bothered, because it seemed like a cheap imitation. After all the original has all these visuals that go with it that seal the deal and make it clear what it actually means. So there was no point. And then I stumbled across this. Thank you. Thank you for making this. You just made the lost little girl in my heart happier than you'll ever know.

Funny thing is this is exactly how I see the original song. Always feeling like I might perhaps be a huge disappointment to my dad for not being the son he expected. And yet, he's as kind as Mulan's dad.

I am loving all the strong female characters that disney has created. Moana, Anna, Elsa, Merida, Repunzel, and others are excellent role models for young girls, inspiring them to be kind and follow their own journey and to not let society tell them who they are. A lot of male characters in Disney are not given this sort of opportunity for young boys. Basically every disney "prince" was boring and basic. We need young male characters who are in touch with their emotions and aren't afraid to talk about their problems and insecurities. Male mental health isn't taken very seriously and we need to show our children that it is okay to not be okay. The first step is to ask for help. Suicide rates are so much higher in males than females, and boys and men need to know that they don't have to be big strong walls. Men can be emotional, soft and insecure too. Onward was a good idea executed wrongly. It felt rushed and I wanted to see more of their interesting world and really get to know the characters. I feel it would have been more impactful as a one season television series, something similar to Over The Garden Wall. There would be room for quiet emotional scenes as well as jokes and action scenes. They could take their time with character arc and development, and really give us a chance to immerse in the setting. I want to see disney really get out of their comfort zone when writing a male protagonist. Set an example and create a role model for young boys like they have done for young girls.

I loved the original mulan as a kid but for some reason this kind of hits closer to home as someone who's mostly masculine presenting even though i was assigned female at birth, also I just need to hug this baby bean so much!!! I don't know if this makes any sense? Probably not but idk.

I don't care about who is and isn't transgender, gay or what-have-you, but I miss the world before you people made everything about that. If so much of people's identities consist of their sexuality, or lack-there-of, there's a real problem.
