For an explicit example look no further than another Disney product. The movie Cheetah Girls with an in girl music group of the same name, have a song called Cinderella with the following lyrics, 'I don't want to be like Cinderella, sitting in a dark old dusty cellar, waiting on somebody to come and set me free ...(insert some more lyrics)... The best part of Mulan's character was that she didn't join the army out of her own "want", unlike many other Disney protagonists. She does indeed have smarts and a desire to find herself like they do, but she initially went off to war to save her injured father (similar to how Belle exchanged herself to the Beast to set her own father free), not on a journey of self discovery. I feel like her selflessness isn't as mentioned either and its what also makes her unique. Her father has to be one of the best Disney parents (alive) ever. He doesn't scold her when she fails with the matchmaker, he comforts her by saying that a late blossom "will likely be the most beautiful of all." He is heartbroken and worried for her life when she leaves, rather than angry. When she offers Shan Yu's sword and the emperor's crest to him as gifts for the family, he discards them immediately, saying that having her as a daughter was the "greatest gift and honor". If they weren't so close, she wouldn't have been willing to take his place in the war. Thus, the movie wouldn't have happened. I wish they had included that in the live action (along with a lot of other things. It wasn't very good.)

Oh but it was also a journey of self discovery, I think. She felt powerless, useless cause she was born a woman and couldn't bring honor to her family, even by marrying a man. Chinese families used to cherish boy first borns and not so much girls. She felt like she had nothing she could do in the role she was assigned, and went out both as a selfless act of love for her family, and as a way to find her own worth outside of what others considered honorable and worthy of respect. That's why even though she could have gone back home on her own before taking down the arrow, she stayed and tried even harder to find her worth while helping the ones she now got attached to achieve the same goal.

The fan mulan used is actually masculine when viewed from within a culturally aware lens, leading to two different readings available to western and other audience! (at least this has been what I was told) In the version where Mulan's fan is masculine, she is embracing her more masculine qualities and working with them as a decisive part of her that she's confident in at that point in the movie! An interesting defense for the societal and social inaccuracies of Mulan cutting her hair (it was looked down upon to cut your hair because of parental honorary reasons) is that Mulan is literally in defiance of societal norms and will achieve her goals no matter if she’ll be looked down upon or not. So this hair-cutting scene may just be a subtle way of also showing how she’s cutting herself off from how society is binding her abilities as a woman
@meidogeometry2 жыл бұрын
Chinese men in most Chinese dynasties (but not all, especially in dynasties not ruled by the Han ethnic group) actually also did not cut their hair, but rather tied them into topknots. Realistically, Mulan would not have been able to tie her hair into a Chinese topknot with the length she cut her hair down to. To also add to your point, dynastic Chinese people did not cut their hair because your body was seen as a gift to you from your parents, and to remove stuff from it would be to be unfilial. (Pragmatism did rule, though; they did trim their nails.) The ur-example of this in Chinese literature would be Xiahou Dun from "Romance of the Three Kingdoms", a semi-mythologized account of the eponymous historical period. Xiahou Dun survives being shot in the eye with an arrow in battle, which comes out when he removes the arrow. In a moment that is probably gross to us modern people, but which represented badass-ness and honor to his parents for the audience during this time, he cries out "essence of my father, blood of my mother, I cannot abandon thee", and then proceeds to eat his eyeball. (Whether or not the real historical figure Xiahou Dun actually did this is immaterial; author Luo Guanzhong wrote this clearly because it would telegraph Xiahou Dun as an honorable man to a 14th century audience.)

A "warrior" is not just someone who physically fights. He (or she) is someone quick minded, a strategist and all around tactician. The intelligence and mental skills should be just as vital as the psychical prowess. All traits that you're attributing to Mulan as something unique to her character, as if she's "not just some warrior". What I get from the story is that the army went completely into one side while neglecting the other. Mulan had the intellect and ingenuity and at the end she even showed great psychical ability, becoming the ideal warrior.
@turner153 жыл бұрын
When she says “not some warrior” she’s clearly talking about the archetype of warrior. She knows all those things are related to people who actually do battle, or else she wouldn’t have brought them up in the context of fights. 😑

Watching this analysis makes me sad about how they adapted Mulan in the live action remake. There, Mulan isn't valued for being good at coming up with unorthodox solutions to difficult problems, she just has chi ablities that let her do the same thing the men are doing, but better. For someone who's supposed to be a feminist icon, live action Mulan leans more into traditionally masculine traits, which is pretty disappointing given how well the animation did Mulan justice years ago.

By using her obstacles to her advantage. How did she beat the general twice? By outsmarting him. I didn't notice her willingness to intervene even when it isn't technically her business until now. That's a really good point of potential foreshadowing! Also even though Mulan isn't my favorite per say, that goes to TIana, but I'm gay.

Love the illustrations and analysis! I also really loved this movie for how it captured Mulan's discomfort in trying to adhere to both stereotypical gender extremes--first trying and failing to perform femininity, then masculinity--just to try to fit in *somewhere*. I can't speak for other Asian Americans, but it also really spoke to me and my first-gen friends from that demographic, just for showing this character feeling at odds with the values of her family and community. As relatable and real as all these issues are, the awkward moments they can produce can be funny at times (at least in my experience), so I also appreciated the sense of humor that the movie has. I can confirm that Mulan was my fav and now I'm gay. For what are surely unrelated reasons, all three of your vids have been on some of my favorite series!

I don't see any comments about the Chinese Chess, and although I am not very experienced, I think I could explain what's happening on the board when Mulan moves the piece (11:48). Small disclaimer, I always played on a board with little metal figure pieces rather than the more traditional flat pieces with symbols, so I'm sure what all the names of pieces are. Even so, the movie doesn't have any markings on the pieces, so we'll have to infer what they are. First, the piece Mulan moves is the rook. It's the only piece that can move as many spaces as it wants horizontally (in the player's perspective). The cannon might by able as well, but I don't remember and moving a cannon there wouldn't have changed the state of the game anyways. In other words, she puts the black pieces player in check. Second, the black piece in the middle of the further row back is likely the emperor. In Chinese Chess, the emperor can't leave outside of the 3x3 box with the diagonal lines in the back. It can also only move one space horizontally or vertically in a turn. That means since the red rook Mulan moved covers all possible movement options in that column (in the players' perspectives once again). This essentially forces the only movement option to be moving to the left on the black side. Really quickly, I need to note it's unlikely for another piece other than the king to move the game out of check for the black piece player. The entire row closest to the center split in the board, I think it is called the river iirc, are very likely pawns. Pawns can only move one space, so there's no way they can circumvent the rook from taking the king. There also aren't any pieces in Chinese Chess that can move only one space diagonal outside of the palace, so we can ignore the black piece diagonally adjacent to the red rook Mulan moved. The only other pieces that can move diagonally are elephants which always move 2 spaces diagonally and can't cross the river. With the starting placement of the elephants, it's impossible for any of the black pieces shown to match up with possible positions of black pieces on the board, so we can ignore the black pieces in the backline. There's the one piece in the front on the red side we can probably ignore. The only possible way the black side could go out of check by taking the rook is if the black piece two spaces away from the red rook happens to be another rook, which I doubt Mulan would have completely overlooked. There's also the possibility of blocking the rook with a horse which is fairly probable, but I don't really know how to explain that possible oversight so I will ignore it. I think the black piece in the back was indeed a horse that blocked the rook, it would only take a few turns to take the horse and put the king back in check. Last, I'm fairly certain that the black side would actually be in checkmate. I'm supposing the other red piece on that side of the board is also also a rook since it seems the king would have moved horizontally earlier in the match to move out of a previous check. It's not certain, but it seems to be implied. Conclusion: Mulan probably won the game for the red guy wooooo but you could have already figure that out from the animation but oh well you asked for this Quick note: please add a comma to the title of the video it hurts so bad oh why note 2: favorite movie and bi now, so close enough Other notes just on all the pieces in Chinese Chess: River: The middle row in the board which isn't technically a space you can move into. It has a few properties regarding two Emperor: If you take the other side's emperor, you win. It can only stay within the palace which is 3x3 and marked by the diagonal lines. It can only move one space horizontal or vertical in a turn. Starts in the further row back in the very center. Guards: It can only move diagonally one space, and it has to stay within the palace hence the oblique lines. Its sole purpose is for protecting the emperor. There are two of them that start in the next space adjacently horizontal to the emperor. Elephants: Can only move two spaces diagonally in one direction. Can't cross the river. Two of them that start adjacently to the guards. Horses: Moves one space horizontally or vertically then one space diagonally. Functions completely identical to American chess if that helps. Two of them that start adjacently to the elephants. Rooks: The can go as many spaces forward or sideways in one direction provided nothing is in its path. Two of them start adjacently to the horses. Cannons: I can't quite recall how these work, but I'll try my best. They can move vertically as much as they want provided nothing is in its way. They can only move one space horizontally though. They take a piece on the opponent's side by jumping over another piece and taking the next one over in that row or column. They can jump over both foe and ally pieces, and they still take pieces traditionally where they move to the space they just took. There are two that start two spaces in front and on both sides 3 spaces horizontally from the king. Soldiers: They can only move one space at a time straight forward. They take pieces in a straight line unlike in American chess. Once they cross the river, they can move one space in any cardinal direction. There are five spaced from the edge of the board every other space one row from the river. That was long, but that should be it. Tell me if I missed anything.

Oh, I just want to point out something interesting that the classic Disney films did with its fairy tales that was markedly different from modern Disney fairy tale movies - not bad, just different. In modern Disney films, they change the characters to make them be more . . . we'll go with developed, even though that isn't always the right word, I think, but it gets the point across. They make the films all about the main characters from the fairy tales, but expand the characters. Classic Disney, on the other hand, preserves the more arch nature of fairy tale characters, leaving them with limited personality, but frames the story from the perspective of minor characters who have almost no role in the story, expanding them instead. Snow White? It's actually told from the dwarves perspective. Sleeping Beauty? Told from the perspective of the fairies. Cinderella? Told from the perspective of the mice. Like I said, this isn't a bad approach, just different, an I find it interesting.

(Warning, long comment) (tl,dr: Mulan check mated that sucker with one move. ) Hi, I know commenting now might be a bit too late despite this being a video 1 year ago, I'm no expert but let me try to explain the chess in 11:28 on why Mulan is able to win the game in one move. Using the reference picture in 11:19 . Chinese chess unlike English chess places on the cross between the squares instead of on the squares. So,lets talk about the 2 main chess pieces involved: 1) 将jiāng/jiàng -same as the king in chess is only able to move 1 square/move horizontaly or vertically around the part of the four squares that looked like a spider web spinned by a drunk spider located in the middle of the board and does not have the ability to go out side of the box. 2) 車chē/jū -same as the castle in chess is able to move horizontally/vertically through the board. Now in 11:45 , the king is cornered to the botton right corner by a castle and the other castle is a line below the castle which has checked the king. So moving the castle to the king's position will end in a checkmate. For those who read the whole comment, Thank you for your time

Oh I know that Chinese chess game. One of my old teachers taught me how to play it. But it seems like whoever made that scene hasn't actually played it. Red has more pieces overall, and black only has 1 piece in enemy territory. It really makes no sense for black to be this smug; even a new player could tell that red is a superior position. Or maybe the writers did it intentionally as a joke, I dunno. I can't clearly tell what the symbols on the pieces are, but it looks to me like Mulan checkmated him, as she moved a rook (or whatever it's called in this game) to check the king, and I think the other red piece nearby is also a rook. And the king isn't allowed to move outside his castle (the 3x3 area marked with the cross).

She actually was the first character I thought of when you asked who the smartest Disney princess was, because we actually see how she uses her smarts to effect the plot, see how she’s smart, vs just kind of... being told that she is. Belle was one of my favorite princesses too growing up, but we never really see her love of books effect how she interacts with the world if that makes sense? It’s been a while since I watched beauty and the beast so I could be wrong about that-even though I loved belle I didn’t connect as much to the actual movie, unlike with Mulan. Mulan’s creativity is baked into her character, so it’s harder to forget about.

Mulan was my favorite Disney character when I was a kid. I loved Kita too. I ended up with a lot of Belle related merch since I couldn't find any of Mulan, let alone Kita. Belle is great too but Mulan wins in my book. I always wanted to grow up to be like her.

her intelligence and quick thinking is underrated when discussing about her as they always talked about just a badass for the sake of badass when she's so much more than that.

I flippin love Mulan. I watched the movie over and over again as a kid. I could just relate to her in a way, and I clearly remember wishing to be more like her.

One little thing you glossed over in the point between the avalanche and the emperor being kidnapped is that after being abandoned in the snow, Mulan chooses to go after the Huns. Like the moment before climbing the pole when she's dismissed from the army- like a lot of her choices in this movie, like giving the girl back her doll or choosing to go in her father's place- she had every reason to stay back. Nobody would've known or blamed her for not doing the right thing. She might even face negative consequences for acting. And she does it anyway because it's the right thing to do and nobody else will do it.

Mulan uses her wit, which gives her an advantage to the other soldiers in some cases (like, idk, slaying almost the entire hun army). She is their equal in training however, which is a really nice message to convey, but she's incredibly smart which comes in handy since she's the main character. I just adore how she finds her own gender identity, not hyper-feminine, not hyper-masculine, just her. I also appreciate greatly how her friends dress up in drag in the finale, to make the message go both ways. They aren't ashamed to present feminine to reach their goals, just like how Mulan wasn't ashamed to present masculine to reach hers. Something else to note and an insanely clever thing of the creators to do, was to make Mulan not save the emperor out of loyalty (thus upholding the patriarchy her morals and identity contradict), but saving him simply as a fellow human being. She doesn't really bow down to him, he and the entire kingdom bow down to her, which is a really nice message, and ALSO THE BIGGEST FUCKUP IN THE LIVE ACTION REMAKE where Mulan fucking goes 'I know my place" like her fucking dad telling her to in the animated version when they fight... this dude legit says "I know my place, it is time you learned yours" AND LIVE ACTION MULAN LEGIT GOES "I KNOW MY PLACE" AT THE FINALE LIKE "I have to serve my emperor" like wtf is this fk propaganda???? Thanks for butchering one of the greatest animated movies ever Disney, thanKS. Also yea great on Pocahontas for romanticizing the kidnapping of a 14 year old.. :/

RE: "LIVE ACTION MULAN LEGIT GOES "I KNOW MY PLACE" AT THE FINALE" The live action was made not only in China, but with the cooperation of the government. That would not have happened without such a concession.

I love Mulan. She was the coolest thing to me growing up, and one of the few Disney princesses I think I genuinely liked, rather than just enjoying their movie as a whole. Of course, it helped that the movie she was in was also great. I'm an LGBT ally, but not LGBT myself.

Mulan was soo well done, definitely my second favorite (goddammit but Atlantis was godly). I never felt that Mulan was meant for "girls only" as she was a compelling and autonomous character all around and as a young boy i thought she was cool af. The new movie just took away everything that was good in Mulan. Her determination in the live action just feels like unfounded arrogance, she doesn't really develop her character and the message is that she was already perfect to begin with. The addition of magic into the mix is just disrespectful imo, because the only reason she succeeded was because she was born with powers and it's essentially saying that a normal farm girl couldn't do what she did. Honestly they tried to make it better and disturbed the beautiful balance of themes in the original.

Mulan was and always will be my favourite Disney prince (before anyone jumps… I’m using the anime version of the term prince especially the type from yuri anime and manga like Kase-san) and definitely helped awaken me to the truth that I was not cis. She, and the voice actress Ming-na Wen, are absolutely amazing and I definitely agree she deserves the title this vid gives her. The absolute smartest princess in the Disney Princess roster.

People sleeping on my girl Jane again; she's honestly one of the most realistic female characters. She's a London girl with a natural curiosity and artistic talent who reacts very realitically to being out of her element. Plus being hilarious and voiced by the great Minnie Driver helps too.

I feel like Mulan's intelligence is key to the movies themes about gender and gender expectations, because when the gender expectations for Mulan's world are "Women are beautiful, graceful, and docile, and men are powerful, strong, and stoic" instead of the movie just being like, "Girls can be powerful and strong too, not just boys" the fact that intelligence is not really a central value of gender expectations for either men or women, the theme becomes, "If we pigeon hole people into one of two roles based on gender, thereby ignoring individual traits and strengths, both the individuals and society will be worse off for it."

Fun fact about official movie ratings: before the 2000s, anything Western and animated was automatically assumed to be for kids and that was enough to slap a G rating on it and call it a day. And that is how Mulan got a massive body count and how The Great Mouse Detective had a cabaret show with strippers, a bar fight, and drugged drinks ALL IN THE SPACE OF TEN MINUTES

It weirds me out sometimes how much the popular conceptions of certain Disney princesses differs from how they're actually portrayed in the films they originally came from. For instance, Mulan is seen as a fighting swordswoman, Belle as an intellectual bookworm, and Jasmine as a sheltered noble...but in their respective movies, Mulan never wins a single fight with a sword (only explosives), Belle is only explicitly shown reading fairy tales and romance novels, and Jasmine uses her skills with con artistry multiple times to save Aladdin's butt. People really see whatever they want to see when it comes to Disney's "Disney Princess" brand, honestly!

It’s always weird to me that people call Belle an inventor, like, where? She’s the daughter of an inventor, she seems to know the tools he uses and their function, but she never actually creates anything within the text. Like, maybe she picked up a thing or two from Maurice, who knows, not me cause we never see anything like that (though I’m only talking animated Belle, fuck the live-action).

I mean the biggest example of her on the fly strategies that save everyone, even thought it's "not her business", is her dressing as a man and going to war instead of her father. She literally had no ways to stop her father from going to war because she wasn't a man and had no brothers, but she found the only way possible, "becoming" a man and going in his place. It's the main event of the movie and the biggest way in which she makes alternatives and solutions out of situations where there was "no solution". I love your essay and I love Mulan exactly for everything you said.
