Күн бұрын

The horse manure/compost/mulch has finally arrived on the allotment after a huge delay and we are in a mulching frenzy catching up on all the things we've been delaying whilst we waited. So this week i have mulched around the mulberry tree and the apple tress, cleared two of the raised beds that had last winters beetroot and bolted lettuce still in (and mulched them) - all ready for planting out the Pumpkins/Winter Squashes. The varieties we are growing this year are:
Marina di Chioggia
Mash Potato
Waltham Butternut
and the wild card Bright Summer.
We are also growing the spectacular Crown Prince Squash direct in the compost bins hoping for three really happy plants this year.
As the weather was a little overcast we also sowed some more carrots under the carrot root fly box. Its now all systems go in the garden and we have got absolutely masses to do. Nothing is ever finished in a vegetable garden is it?
This was also my last week of proper work so i'm now down to just Fridays for a few weeks before being cut loose to garden for a couple of months!

Jesse, If you take your trowel to a welder they can fix it up with just three small spot welds. Auto body shops will have one or two willing individuals who might even be willing to do it for free if not at a small cost.(worth a try for your favorite trowel!) Good luck.

Defeat slugs in a cold frame. Inch or so of water in a tray. Stand two plant pots in the water and stand the tray of seedlings etc on the pots. Unless slugs can swim or jump they can't get at them. Takes up space but worth doing for plants that really matter.

Your camera work has advanced to a whole new level Jess. Very cool watching you barrow the mulch all that way, goodness what a chore. Hope you and mum had a good supply of icy/hot patches for your sore muscles after. Those ladybird larvae numbers are incredible and congrats on your garlic harvest (mum as cameragirl)! Can’t wait Thursdays “What to plant in July” episode and the pond report/episode after that. Lots to look forward to. Sorry about your reduced work hours, but hey, less stress and more allotment time! I have caught poison oak, I pulled out what I thought was Virginia Creeper when weeding my daylily bed. Silly me. Feeling better now, the itch is lessening. Today I gave everything a long, deep water. We’ve not had rain in yonks. Noticed tomato clusters forming on my Sungold. Not long now. Take care. 🥰🙃🙂

Hahah! Thank you! We’ve done ‘the compost marathon’ in the rain so many times, it was a pleasure in the morning sun this time! And you get a rest on the long walk back with an empty barrow 😄 Mum did a great job as camera girl, she’s getting good! Oh and sorry about the poison oak! Nasty. Hope you’re nearly over it.

I wish I had so many ladybug larvae I think I’ve seen maybe 2 ladybugs so far. Rain what’s that 🥵🥵🥵. I’m totally missing my garden but it’s just too hot during the day 45+ I have tarp or shade clothes everything looks like a circus 🎪 came to town. If your interested I can send you some gorgeous black poppies I will DM you. Funny how compost can make your day I would rather get a present of that than most anything else 😂😂. Funny but when mom was filming garlic pull she sounded like an Aussie. We had tom seedlings in the lawn 😂😂. Yes, please! I love when the variety is in the screen, especially because there are so many its impossible to know them all. Then add in accents and regional pronunciations, and it can be hard to know for sure what a YT'er is talking about. I started gardening just before the world fell apart last year and am part of the reason for the seed and compost shortages, at least in the US. Wish I had started years ago when I wanted to but thought it would be too hard. What started as a container garden ramped up to converting our entire back yard to full fledged garden (and some of the front yard landscaping for edibles). I'm a new subbie and am loving your channel!!! You are just adorable! And I love your cooking vids too 💗

Jess I couldn’t believe you have to wheel barrow through a cemetery to get stuff to your plot. Had me giggling as my mum used to say peaceful neighbours. Couldn’t you get access from the school next to you? It’s great to see your and other people I follow are getting a harvest after such a shocking start to the year. My winter growing is looking good just picked a young cabbage for dinner last night very tender broad beans are tallest I’ve ever had so hoping when time comes I’ll get a super crop. There the only things in the ground everything else are in grow bags or pots. We just had shortest day yippee. I’ll have to start planning again. Take care Jess and mum.

The cemetery is the easiest place! The lorry can’t get any closer and the other gate (that leads onto a main road) is a slightly shorter distance but all up a steep hill! Yeah, it’s slowly starting to ramp up here, picking the odd thing! Soooooo far behind last year though still. Fingers crossed for a long summer as compensation! Well done on the cabbage, I love them when they are like that all tender and sweet. 😄

Jessie I've made a mistake i see you planted the potato squash beside a climbing frame i thought they where like a bush growing plant and where I've planted them i have no way off erecting a climbing frame my first time growing them
@JessieatPlot37

They don’t need a climbing frame! They will just scramble across the ground like a normal winter squash. I’m just trying to save a bit of space by encouraging them to grow up!

Excellent vlog Jessie and good that you have plenty compost now. It's going to get more difficult to get compost containing peat because the government gave retailers until the end of this year to stop selling it voluntary and so far the majority haven't so the government is considering a mandatory ban. This will force more research into alternatives which are more sustainable and environmental friendly.

I don't think a scoop trowel is mentally for digging litteraly just for scooping up compost etc. when filling pots and things the handle to scoop joint is not man enough to handle the strain

Liked the keep fit video at the start. Why can't you get free manure? Is it because if the city location? I share an allotment, gave my packet of Touchon carrot seed to a friend, she sowed the lot and only 3 have come up. Is it because the ground is too free draining and dries out?
@JessieatPlot37
@JessieatPlot37 3 жыл бұрын
Yeah, no such thing as free manure around these parts! Ah that’s a shame! Carrots live free draining soil but they really do need to stay consistently damp until they’ve come up. If they dry out they’re done for! If you sow them, give them a massive soak and then cover them with a board it can help. Just keep checking under the board and whip it off when they start to show.

9:03 Is that a visual description of the arches form or a nodding as in "yes we know the arches"? Btw. pickled peas? Why not? Something for a Thursday Vlog, maybe?

This is beautiful! You do amazing work, you and your mom! Have you ever tried "candied" cucumbers? Only asking because you mentioned pickling/pickled and my brain went down the rabbits hole of food I've eaten hahaha

Good work moving all the mulch ladies I thought we had a trek from parking up! After admiring your raised bed mesh covers I’ve been trying to Google some with not much success. Please could you advise the mesh you use that’s able to bend over but seems sturdy too. If you have a link that would be fab. All looking fab on your plot 👍🏻👏🏻❤️

Thanks Ellie. You know what, I really need to measure the gauge of the mesh. We have 3/4 different thicknesses and I’m not sure which is which but I will do it today and get back to you!

"Which I find pretty alarming..." *ExistentialDreadIntensifies* Ps. I don't know what your broken trowel was like, but the handle looked like it was riveted or spot welded to the scoop? Could you drill new holes into it and rivet it back together? (use a vise when drilling, though.)

How much compost do you produce in your own compost bins? I'm trying to be be self-sufficient but admit I do buy (out of convenience) some manure (yep, I must get along to some stables!!!) & mushroom compost.

I would appreciate your advice. I am growing tomatoes, cucumbers and peppers in my new poly tunnel for the first time. Even though I have a couple bee hives, I am not getting great germination in there. Do you manually germinate? That being said. Plants are 6’ tall. Hope you’re well!
@JessieatPlot37
@JessieatPlot37 3 жыл бұрын
Pollination? Or are you just starting them off? If it’s pollination you can tickle your tomato flowers and that will help! Also are you in the male flower phase of the cucumbers or do you have both?
@scottpadfield1511
@scottpadfield1511 3 жыл бұрын
@@JessieatPlot37 Sorry. I did mean pollination. I have male and female on the cucumbers. Peppers have just started flowering but on a tress of tomatoes I might only get 25-50% at best giving fruit.
