Mule Britchen - How to Adjust the Britchen, Do Not Use A Crupper

The most important thing to know about the mule / donkey britchen is that you must ALWAYS ride with one.
Flat ground, uphill, downhill - it doesn’t matter. You must ride with a britchen.
The britchen does a lot of the work to keep your saddle in place - preventing it from rolling left or right and working with the front cinch, rear cinch (yes, rear cinch), and breast collar to keep the saddle from moving forward (riding up on the neck) or backward (riding back on the kidneys).
The second most important thing to know about the britchen is that it constantly needs adjusting. You want the position of the britchen to match the terrain you’re riding - including flat terrain. If you’re not actively adjusting your britchen, you are actively causing problems that may not show up for
The third most important thing to know about the britchen is that you cannot substitute it with a crupper. The animal’s tail and back cannot take the pressure put on by a crupper..

I know you say never buy a mule that previous owner didn't use one but is this for every where? I live in the flat lands. 98 percent of people don't use britchin around here. I will always use one because I ride all over the USA . I am looking for a new mule, but everyone around here doesn't use these, and I know you said don't buy them. Is this for mountain areas only?

So if 1.5 inch spacing on a breeching is normal for flat ground what do you do on really long (20+mins to get down) and steep (your leaning back in the saddle to keep balance) hills. Do you tighten it till it touches or even tighter if so how tight??

I’m looking at getting one for my horse. The trails are our new barn have a lot of steep ups and downs, do I need to adjust anything different for a horse vs a mule? Also my saddle only has on D-ring on the back behind my seat, if the britchin has two straps on the hip plate like yours can I just hook both on the same D-ring or do I need to buy one with only one strap? Thanks!
