A gentleman named Mehr Mohamad taught me the robab in Shahr Ara, Kabul. He was from Kohdaman, and from the same village my grand parents lived. He in fact taught me this very song, and I can see his signature in the way he strokes the strings. I still have the robab he gave me, but after 50 years, I am still not able to play as nicely as he did :) He used to play at the radio station and I agree with him when he said that Ustad Umar was a great artist, but his music lacked love. If he is alive, I wish him well, and if he is not alive, rest in peace. Thanks Noor Khan.

This was posted by my good friend Noor, who made this fabulous recording with a Sony Walkman cassette - I digitized it. Anyone remember these times at the Behzad in Kabul, Chari Ansari, Afghanistan? Anyone remember me? Mir, Angela and Barack preferred to call me 'Craig-Jon' to my Indian-given name, bestowed upon me by sadhus on the ghats of the Ganges in Benares. I was the cook, then general manager of the hotel, and would call these parties when I could see the time was right. Mir Mohammed was considered to be in friendly competition with Mohammed Omar, as the best rabaab player in the country. He would play on till 2am, taking the remaining few true music lovers into the sky on his persian-carpet ride... A true master, a truly marvelous time. You may read the story of this very recording at the end of the chapter called "Keeper of the Inn" in my book "Odyssey: Ten Years on the Hippie Trail" on Amazon and Kindle.
