Post from Canada: Just a little comparison with what happened in Wayanad Vs here in Canada we had similar (if only at a much larger scale) Land Slide at 'Chilcotin River' and how it is being handled. It was a huge land slide that happened last week which blocked a river called Chilcotin. Because of this till yesterday the water was being backup to about 1 km long, 600 meters wide and 30 meters above normal depth levels. We had already evacuated down stream population (about 100 sq. kms) - the breach (water started overflowing the crest) happened yesterday night and the max rate of water discharge recorded is about 750 cubic meters per second. They are still expecting land slides both upstream and down stream because of this. They estimate about 3 million dump trucks amount of debris and sand, rocks to be washed over the breach (this is not including the water). In short, the scale of this is much, MUCH larger and so far everything is going according to plan. They were tracking this thru Lidars and Satellites all the way thru for new deformities on the banks.

Why can’t they make an encasing dam? Make it darn strong so, even if current structure collapses, it should stay.

What I don’t understand is if there are earth anchors 95+ are installed properly and tensioned with the concrete capping why do people make it worrisome. Further, it’s a gravity dam where the weight of the structure can hold the pressure of water from one side. Strengthening of the dam wall with an additional wall at down stream was also done.

The dam is made of surkhi mortar . It is a mixture of lime ,powdered burnt clay and water. One problem with this is that the lime in this mixture reacts to water in the dam over time and will erode away . People were able to see the damage when they were able to visit. But now people aren't even allowed inside . so we can only speculate.

Well yes it’s made of lime as a binding material. However, the strengthening process involved placing / filling the cavities with cement mix, Prior to installation of earth anchors which is at every 10m (say). Considering the widening and the new support made from the down stream the strength would be there. It is only the up stream that may have an issue in the lining. Agree that the lime may not hold over a period of time but then the cavities were filled much later. This means that the inner side is comparatively made better and the down stream side is strengthened properly. Deterioration can happen only in the upstream side and may not have any major impact

The argument that a 136 year old Dam can be maintained long term like this itself is questionable. Especially when the engineer who built the dam forecasted it to be viable for only 50 years.

Why can't TN Govt construct a dam on the opposite side of the Mullaperiyar dam and store the water there, especially during the monsoon season, thereby keeping the storage level very low (below danger level) during the rainy season.

Dam is not in TN but in Kerala. However, custodian and beneficiary of dam is TN. There will be acute water shortage in TN if dam is decommissioned.

എത്രയൊക്കെ മുൻകരുതൽ എടുത്താലും ഇന്നേക്ക് 100 വർഷങ്ങൾക്കുള്ളിൽ കേരളത്തിലെ മാത്രമല്ല ലോകത്തുള്ള മുഴുവൻ മനുഷ്യരും മരിക്കും. അന്ന് അനന്തര തലമുറ ഉണ്ടായിരിക്കും. ഇങ്ങനെ ചിന്തിച്ചാൽ ഒന്നും പേടിക്കാനില്ല. ഡാം പൊളിഞ്ഞാൽ തന്നെ അഞ്ചോ ആറോ ജില്ല പോകുമായിരിക്കും. ബാക്കിയുള്ളവർ ശേഷിക്കുമല്ലോ. ഇങ്ങനെ ഒരു ദുരന്തം ഉണ്ടായാൽ അതെങ്ങനെ സംഭവിച്ചു എന്നുള്ളതിന് ഡാറ്റ കിട്ടും. ആഗോള ദുരന്തം ആയി പ്രഖ്യപിച്ചാൽ ലോകത്തിലെ സകല രാജ്യങ്ങളും സഹായം തരും.നഷ്ടപെട്ടതിന്റെ മൂന്നിരട്ടി കിട്ടും. പിന്നെ ഗൂഗിൾ മാപ്പിൽ ചെറിയൊരു മാറ്റം മാത്രം. കടലിൽ നിന്നുള്ള മത്സ്യങ്ങളെ കാലങ്ങളായി ത്തിന്ന് മനുഷ്യർ ജീവിച്ച സ്ഥിതിക്ക് അവിടെയുള്ള ജീവികൾക് കുറെ മനുഷ്യരും ഭക്ഷണം ആയി തീർന്നു എന്ന് കരുതിയാൽ പോരെ. പിന്നെ കേരളത്തിൽ ജീവിക്കുക എന്നത് തന്നെ വലിയൊരു ദുരന്തമായി മാറിക്കൊണ്ടിരിക്കുന്ന സാഹചര്യത്തിൽ വലിയൊരു ദുരന്തം നിമിഷ നേരം കൊണ്ട് നമ്മളെ ഇല്ലാതാക്കുന്നു എങ്കിൽ അതുമൊരു ഭാഗമായി കരുതാമല്ലോ. ഏതായാലും ഓരോ മഴക്കാലത്തും ഇങ്ങനെ ചർച്ചകൾ നടത്താനും ഇതുപോളിയുന്നത് വരെ ആഘോഷിക്കാനും കഴിയുന്നുണ്ടല്ലോ. ഭാവിയിൽ നടക്കാനുള്ളത് ആരെകൊണ്ടും തടയാനും കഴിയില്ല.
