Sebastian Vettel's reluctance to follow Ferrari team orders at the Russian Grand Prix brought back memories of the Red Bull 'Multi 21' controversy he sparked by overtaking Mark Webber to win the 2013 Malaysian Grand Prix. As well as hearing from Webber on what he thinks about the incident today, we take a look back at the fallout from the race, including the questions it raised about Red Bull's management

My late brother & I went to the Malaysian Gp in 2013 (we're Australian's) & were so happy when MW took the lead as it looked a sure win -until - Vettel's - pass. MW did try to hunt him back down but just couldn't catch him. @@Rocky712_ you misunderstood mate. You said that Ferrari should not do team orders. So if that should happen then everyone should not do team orders as well. @@swisscheese1084 Haha, i did not misunderstand it. :D I know Mercedes used team orders before and F1 Fans (as I am) hated it. But because you called Bottas, I thought about Mercedes 2019 season compared to Ferrari's one. They were totally different. They [Mercedes] never really had to do team orders because they never really had the two mercedes fighting for position because of pace difference....maybe Azerbaijan if you want to count it. I am not a Ferrari Hater. Ferrari is one of my most loved teams (maybe the most loved) with two of my favourite drivers while I am bored by Mercedes, do not like Hamilton at all (on character). But I still cheered for this Mercedes 1-2 at Russia 2019 because Ferrari deserved to lose this race due to their disrespecting, anti-racing mentality. I literally do not know how you came to the absolutely wrong conclusion, that I am a Ferrari Hater. :D I mean even many other Ferrari Fans disliked this team order and I am not an exception for this. Even as a Fan, I should critisize wrong decision, because I would critisize Mercedes in this situation the same.

Vettel disobeyed the multi-21 team orders because of Brazil 2012, when he not only had to fight both Ferraris, but also Webber, who pulled off a crazy move at one of the restarts. In fact, the only reason he was behind Webber in Malaysia was a too early switch to slick tires, after which Vettel was repeatedly undercut by Hamilton until the Mercedes driver had to back off to save fuel. In clear air Vettel was clearly faster than Webber, but due to the time lost behind Hamilton it took him the entire race to catch up again. As much as I'd love to see Webber win, he didn't really deserve it.

Vettel even managed to crash into the side of Webber on a straight while Webber was driving in a dead straight line, and then got out the car and have “idiot” single finger gestures at Webber. But hey let's bush over Vettel's long history of petulance and deflect this onto Lewis. We get it, you don't like Lewis, but not every news story must be about Lewis. This one is about Vettel.

Unlike Mercedes and Ferrari? Schumacher? Hamilton? Ferrari claiming Vettel was the first driver at the beginning of the season. Ordering Leclerc to let him by at the most stupid moments. Now in Russia letting Vettel stay out for four laps just to let him get behind Leclerc. Remember Bottas the last couple of years. How many times has he been orderd not to attack Hamilton or to let him by. The strange rule he explained at Singapore where he needed to slow down for Hamilton. Hamilton has always been the first driver since Rosberg left. At least when Ricciardo and Verstappen were teammates they let them race. Unlike Mercedes and Ferrari where they never let them race. Albon and Gasly just arn't good enough. People claiming they get a worse car then Verstappen because Redbull want him to look good are just plain stupid. They want to finish top in the constructors more than making Verstappen world champion. The money comes from the constructors.

I agree, but I do believe that a team needs to have a #1 and #2 driver... I don't see how a team can have equal drivers... Just look at the history... whenever a team tried to treat both drivers equally, the result is that the drivers start fighting between them, which is exactly what a team does not want. The team wants the #2 driver to help the #1 driver, just like we see in MErcedes whenever Ham is P1 and Bottas is P2, they will use Bottas as a buffer to block Ferrari & Red Bull. I know it's not fair, and I personally want to see both drivers treated equally, but in reality this is not what happens, despite what the 3 big teams say in front of the cameras. This is also proven by the fact that Ham wanted to keep Bottas for next year. Ham knows he's faster than Bottas, so Ham is the #1 driver, and Bottas is able to help him with Ferrari & Red Bull.

He won his championships with Red Bull because he was able to adapt to the blown diffuser driving style very well, plus he was good on cold tires (and still is). He could qualify at the front, jump out of DRS range while the tires were still warming up, then just manage it till the end. Even under the Red Bull dominant years there were signs of his inability to cope with pressure. The way he reacted to Danny coming to Red Bull, and the subsequent very noticeable mistakes at Ferrari in the years since just strengthen this hypothesis.

Then both drivers were told to turn down engine modes, gearbox settings, etc. to preserve the car, after all the same components needed to be used in the next race in Bahrain as well, so there was no point in putting extra stress on them. Webber complied with everything he was told and was running with about 70bhp less than normal. Thats the only reason Vettel even cought up to him. Webber did not expect an attack from Vettel since he knew Vettel had confirmed to stay behind. When Vettel attacked anyway Webber was completely defenseless. We all want to see teammates fight. If Vettel wanted to win that race he should have said that, instead of telling the team he is OK with second. But with eaqual weapons he had no chance that day, so he made this deceitful play.

We all know, why Seb did what he did. Seb is a team player whether you like or not. He is never bigger than the team, and he knows that. But regarding Malaysia 2013, he wanted pay back for Brazil 2012, when webbed unnecessarily pushed him to the pit wall in that race and costed him many positions, all confirmed by Horner himself in the F1 podcast. He did one selfish thing in his whole career, bar China 2014, when he reluctantly gave away to Ricardo.

Bullshit, he's the exact same opposite of what you said. He's a good team player when he has no other chance, like he did at Spa this year, but when there's even the slightest chance of winning, he's the most unsportsman-like and bratty man who's ever driven an F1 car

Michele Cozzarin exactly, you really think racing driver do what they do to come second? Lol name one racing driver who isn’t a multiple World champion who wouldn’t do the same. You really think, guys like alonso, senna, Michael, Hamilton, Vettel would roll over when they have a chance to win. At the end of the day, the team is first, but there is chance to win, you will take it.

It could be argued that better leadership from the team would have stamped out issues such as Multi 21 at Malaysia 2013 and the fight for the title at Interlagos 2012. You could almost say the issues really came to the forefront during Istanbul 2010 - the fact that Horner seemingly wasn't in control of his drivers three years later should have been rightfully concerning. Ferrari risk the same issues now if they continue to allow Leclerc and Vettel to butt heads on and off track. There's not really a clear cut right or wrong in my mind, in either the Red Bull Vettel vs Webber situations or the Ferrari Vettel vs Leclerc situation unfolding now - I think Webber was justified in trying to force his case when the team clearly started to favour Vettel, but at the same time it was his decision to continue with Red Bull all those years.

according to me, from past events seb has done good for his team and for his own,he knows the situation of the race and act accordingly despite team orders. sometimes team orders prove to be loss for the team. ferrari shouuld knew he was faster than leclerc from the starting of race,he didnt need to give back the place mercedes was too close. last year in sochi, mercedes gave team orders as ferraris were way back. vettel did right in malaysia 2013 as he was faster than mark and mercedes was end of his tail. in brazil 2012,mark should let vettel go as there was no point for fighting for wdc as they already won constructors and vettel's important day. in turkey 2010,mark was struggling for grip and vettel was faster despite he was too young and hot headed. in 2014,vettel let go ricciardo ahead of him as he knew he was struggling with car's pace and obeyed the team order every time.

Peter Zwegert Still it depends what was agreed within the team, Valtteri got equal treatment at the beginning of the year so he could try and put up a title fight and he is driving in a team with a five time world champion, obviously now he doesn’t get equal treatment anymore because Lewis is almost champion again. But Malaysia was the second race of the 2013 campaign so it isn’t weird there were teamorders that didn’t favor Seb.
