This is the most informative and the most amusing video on lighting that I've come across :D I like how everything is in its own category, very systematically put together. The names of the color combos are everything, I love it.

I can't believe how much skill this seems to take. It seems the person running the lights must have a very good memory in order to work a good show, as well as be able to focus and be quick. He also must know the music very well as well. This also seems to be the type of thing that requires a lot of schooling, or at least hours and hours of time of figuring it out on your own...just like a musician. Mad, mad respect.

As someone who also fumbled their way through an intelligent theatrical lighting obsession when younger (and subsequently got dissuaded when he couldnt figure out the link between the key framed animations he was building in vixen for Halloween diy show controllers and those super fancy pre programed all the things tables used to control concert lighting.....But then again, Ive always been a more brute force bare metal kind of person so....) I agree with the sentiment that one should find what works for them. However, having a starting point to understand how its thought about by someone in the industry, something to build off of and explore, to then at some point land on a layout that works for them and not just using someone elses layout and fumbling through it, is a total godsend! Absolutely, people, with stuff like this, it is 1000% built how you are comfortable using it. Customize how you see fit. Make it yours But starting from nothing is hard, and its a complicated subject. Old salts, please, share your knowhow. You'd be surprised how little there is to gleam from the outside, stuff yall have forgotten having to learn the hard way. Share it all!

I kinda like your names for things, too. I dig that you don't wanna slum it on the same rig all the time, if you can use the same designs as a starting-point. It's your desk. I'm actually a semi-retired Sound Technician DDL (Don't Do Lights). I like it.

Wonderful Setup and Video! I really love your colour combos and and the psychedelic look. I once used a similar controller layout in M-PC by Martin, but a lot smaller and less complex. It was still great for busking and a lot of fun. How is reliability going with Midi input into MA2?
@Nicpagan
@Nicpagan 8 жыл бұрын
I am currently using MPC and im making my way over to MA but the midi input is terrible however a external app called bomes midi translator is amazing its similar to MPC tools and I use it and created my workflow from martin in MA loving MA so far the only problem is you gotta pay like $50 for bomes.. well worth it!

7:42 in the video. How did you achieve this technique? Did you program the rotation into each position preset while a gobo was on but clear from the programmer?
@TheLightSideLLC
@TheLightSideLLC 6 жыл бұрын
It's not a gobo - It's a prism but the concept is the same. "Cleared from the programmer" is close. I just have the flat prism executor running when I program the positions. You can then turn off "Preset Filters" and store prism (or gobo) information into a position preset. In my show file I actually went into Encoder Groupings and made Beam Position/Index a "Position" attribute instead of "Beam" attribute so that it not only shows up next to Pan and Tilt on the encoders, but you also don't need to disable preset filters and the feature is considered a Position feature!

Hey Luke, have you made that midi sync lua plugin available somewhere? I've been working on an integration with TouchOSC on iPad to busk colors / color combos and I've got a hard coded sync going now through midinote commands on the executor buttons but would love a more versatile way of doing this.

Luke Stratton Designs choice dude. That's neat. Can I ask a question about your positions? I'm sure you said that your up down in out and blind positions define every other effects/special positions size, and all you need to do in a new room is to modify those 5 positions. How do you do that?

They are all linked to a Rate Master Fader, and all the cues are assigned to that Rate Master. There is a separate Rate master that has a Learn button (tap tempo). I have a simple LUA script that runs when you press the GO button. It runs the script and that copies the Rate from the Tapped Rate Master to the Rate Master that is referenced by all the sequences.

How do you do you symetrical effect ?? Mine is alwasys messd up depending on number of lights . I know the basics wit wing etc but howwwww
@TheLightSideLLC
@TheLightSideLLC 3 жыл бұрын
I make them by referencing symmetrical positions for the effect. You can also make them by using a negative value for the pan wings like "-2". Tilt still needs to be Positive.

Hey Dr. Luke, I have a quick question. Your position fade time, is that a speed master or a rate master? Are they just assigned to your position executors as the speed / rate time group? The reason I'm asking is because I'm having a hard time getting my position executors to use my rate master. They just ignore it and move to the new position at the same rate no matter what I do with my rate master. Any clues?
@TheLightSideLLC
@TheLightSideLLC 8 жыл бұрын
I use Rate Masters for pretty much everything. You need to give the cue a fade time. I use 8 seconds for everything. That way when the fader is at 50% (1:1) they take 8 seconds but can be slowed to stop or pushed to infinite.
