Multi Layer SVG from Illustrator for Cricut Design Space - convert text and images with ease
Learn how to create a multi-layer SVG file ready for the Cricut Design Space. The process includes working with text with multiple strokes and a fill and a bitmap image which needs to be traced. Learn how to group shapes into compound shapes so they'll be on the same layer when you open the SVG file in the Cricut Design Space. You will learn lots about expanding and tracing objects, checking your paths are correct and preparing your vectors ready for cutting with your Cricut. If you own a Brother Scan N Cut this video should help you create SVG files that work with your machine too.

This is a great "GoTo" or "Keeper" video for those of us who own an electronic cutting machine, such as the Cricket. Brother has a machine called Scan N Cut which uses svg files as well. These machines come with lots of designs built in, however, if you are a designer and want something of your own cut, the instructions that come with the machines for doing this are somewhat lacking to say the least. I am adding this video to my personal library for reference when I want to design something of my own choice to be cut on my machine.

Thank you Mary. I am glad you liked this. It can be a bit tricky preparing type and images for svg but when you have done it correctly you have something you can use yourself or potentially also sell as a cutting object. I am glad this will work with your Brother Scan N Cut too.

Hi Helen, got a question for you. I was wondering is it possible to have a offset stroke on one side of a line? (I think you call it a open path) I'm trying to do this with a coastline for a simple map. Or am I better off creating a shape that goes off the artboard and then doing a clipping mask or something similar? (also many thanks for the globe video I requested a few months ago :D)

Hi Helen. In AI, does it all need to be within one single layer? Or is it possible to have multiple layers with their own different compound paths?

Hi Helen another great video as always. I learn so much from your videos. I have question I save my svg as save as but you saved the file by choosing export as , is there a reason as to why you saved it that way and if so what a it . Thanks

Great video. I’m having trouble keeping the elements in my design all together but with layers showing in the layers panel when uploaded to Cricut. I either group them all and have one basic cut or have to attach them in Cricut before making the cut.

@@HelenBradley I’m wondering why my text does not stay in place when I bring it into Cricut and select “make it”. I want my customers to not have to weld or attach the file in Cricut before cutting. When I “make it’ letters are all on one side of the cutting preview with the image on the other side. They’re not connected, staying in place.

hi Helen another great tutorial , why did you save it through export and not just save as or is it the same .

This is great. I don't know if you take video requests but I have created text with an offset path stroke in illustrator so there is tansparency between the text and its outline so whatever is under would show through. I have tried everything but can't get that to go into Cricut design space. When I put it in design space it fills the transparent part with the stroke color. Thanks for any advice you can offer.
@HelenBradley
@HelenBradley 3 жыл бұрын
Hmmm, did you expand the text? I would ensure that you have it broken into pieces before saving it as a svg file. Let me know if that helps?

Hello this is a nice video, but I have a Roland BN-20 machine and I wanted to know if you knew how to do this for the BN-20 machine?
@HelenBradley
@HelenBradley 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Melitta. Great question. Have you tried this approach on a Roland BB-20? The SVG file format is pretty standard and as I don't have your machine to test it, it might be appropriate for you to try it yourself? To help you out I have uploaded my finished SVG file here: app.box.com/s/7lya3b8t58xu1ch5y1jcvcq0g6vazj7v Feel free to download it and test it on your machine. If it works, then you know my video instructions will work for you too. I would be interested to hear how you go so please let me know.

It depends on the software you're using. I have a Silver Bullet Cutter and I use SCAL (Sure Cuts A Lot) to cut my designs. If you use SCAL, simply save your AI file as a *.*svg file and open the *.*svg file in SCAL to cut. The steps are probably similar for the cutting software you use on your Roland.

Does the way we save SVG files in Adobe Illustrator matter in cut files? I mean do we have the same result if we save them from the "export as" or the "save as" dialog boxes? Do we also have to tick the "Use Artboard" when we save them from the "Export As" dialog box?
@HelenBradley
@HelenBradley 3 жыл бұрын
Great question Elsa. I believe you can use either option to save your SVG. The Use Artboard selection generally ensures your final document has only the artboard contents in it but it doesn't work quite that way with svg files. With svg files objects that are positioned over the edge of the artboard are not cut off as they would be with a bitmap file format BUT objects that exist totally outside the artboard aren't saved in the file using that option. I hope this helps?
@elsapakopoulou6759
@elsapakopoulou6759 3 жыл бұрын
@@HelenBradley I found this at Adobe's help section: You can save artwork in SVG format using the Save, Save As, Save A Copy, or Save For Web & Devices command. To access the complete set of SVG export options, use the Save, Save As, or Save A Copy command. The Save For Web & Devices command provides a subset of SVG export options that are applicable to web-oriented work.

Is there a trick to retain the layers names/info? When I pull the SVG I saved in Illustrator into CDS, it renames each of the layers the same thing, which is usually what I type in for the file name during importing. I would like to be able to eventually sell some designs on Etsy, but I just can’t get around this one issue.😣
@HelenBradley
@HelenBradley Жыл бұрын
There are some rules about layer names. Do you know these and are you complying with them? Such as all lowercase, no spaces, use dashes and underscores only, don’t start with a number etc. Let me know if this might be the issue.

Everytime I try to make an object a compound path, it removes all the color from the object and just leaves the tracing. When I click off it, it disappears! What am I doing wrong?
@HelenBradley
@HelenBradley 3 жыл бұрын
Monica, that can happen so you might need to reapply the fill color but you should not lose the shape entirely - it should still be there. I don't think you are doing anything wrong, per se. From my quick check, the appearance of the bottom most shape is the one used for the compound path so perhaps you have something selected that has no stroke and no fill at the bottom of your selection? Might be worth checking.
