Multi Recording Tutorial - Yamaha Genos. Create your own band on the Genos!

The Yamaha Genos is a state of the art arranger keyboard and excels in what an arranger keyboard should do. In this video I walk through the steps to create a song using the midi multi recording feature.
The song created was spontaneous with no prior preparation. I did edit out the occasional 'ahs' and 'hmm's.

Thanks for the tuition. I’m a PROUD Genos owner and I make excellent use of it. The only trouble I’ve had is when I’ve saved a recording, it’s not saved the changed including balance, panning and or other changes but only resaved the recording.

Hi John, it would be handy to know off the back of this tutorial how you edit any mistakes made when building up each element of the song. For example, I have recorded the accompaniment, beat & chords. I have attempted then to record a guitar sound over the top of the first recording but made some errors with the notes played. Is there a way you can edit that layer of recording without harming the underlying part of the recording? Also, once saved, whereabouts in the keyboard do you find your recording - for example from scratch after you've turned the keyboard back on? Sorry if these are silly simple questions - still learning! ha ha - Many thanks

Hello. I've just got the genos and I have a couple questions, coming from Korg. Firstly, how do you record s pattern and put it to a track? Secondly, is there a way to copy measures on a track? For instance, I've recorded 4 (1-4) measures on a track, and want to copy those measures to measures 5-8. Is this possible? Thank you.

Super video John, thank you. I have a question about the arranger loop function. 20 years ago I used the "arranger loop" function constantly on my Roland E-86 (made in 1994), to play or create the underlying chord progressions (often spontaneously), and then use two hands to play solos (LH on the modulation wheel or pitch bend, RH play saxophone or whatever); or, in a live setting, while leading worship I could establish a chord progression, and then physically depart from behind the keyboard, walk out to the front of the stage, and sing and lead the people in worship WHILE the E-86 kept playing the progression - and then after a while, go back behind the keyboard and seamlessly pick up in midstream (to play reharms or go into the chorus or B-section, etc). It was wonderful! Fast-forward 25 years, and now I use a Tyros 5, and it's a great keyboard, BUT sadly it doesn't allow for either of these powerful and useful functions. My Left Hand is forever trapped having to play the chord progressions, with only spits and spurts darting over the left to adjust the mod or pitchbend wheels, and always having to zip back to play the new chord on the down-beat (which is often the very moment when mod or pitchbending is most needed in an effective solo). And another thing: with the Tyros, my body is physically trapped behind the keyboard. I can't depart from behind the Tyros to get more physically present to lead or exhort the people. Alas, how I miss the arranger loop function! (I'm much less effective as a live performer without it.) So I'm very excited to see that the Genos 2 has the arranger loop!! Way to go Yamaha! So now.... I wonder: since this appears to be primarily a software update (and not a hardware feature that requires a separate set of buttons, like on the E86) ... could this feature possibly be programmed into an updated firmware or software version for the Tyros 5? Does anyone have any idea? I don't really want to leave my Tyros 5 yet, it's still an awesome keyboard; plus, the learning curve to learn the Genos is as much a deterrent as is the price to upgrade from the Tyros. So hopefully Yamaha will see fit to program this arranger loop function into the Tyros software or firmware, and not force us who REALLY need this feature, to buy a Genos2. Would love to hear from you John if you have any knowledge about this, or for that matter anyone who might know?

Buy a Roland RC1 Looper and connect it to the Tyros 5. Job done for £70 pprox.

Hello. In Audio multi Recording, I used to save my music easily on my USB stick. Today, I can't save anymore. I do Menu, then Export and at the top of the screen I find Cancel, New Folder and Export again. I no longer have Save here. Do you know how to recover this function? Thanks

Hi Sunder - Yes there is. If you go to Song > Choose Song A or Song B > Play, in the list of buttons along with 'Play' you can find the loop button at the end. It tapped, it will turn green to signify that the loop is on. Now if you play the song it will loop infinitely. Hope this helps!

So, is it necessary to add auto accompaniment styles before doing the multitrack recording part, or can you just record without any auto accompaniment style, like in GarageBand?

Hi Tejas - Thanks for the question. Yes, you can in fact use all the 16 tracks for instruments alone. Make sure you use the metronome to keep your timing if you are not having drums prior to your recording.

Hi Kerri - This is part of the Yamaha Genos inbuilt instruments set. It can be accessed from Woodwind > P3 > IrishPipesAir. It’s sounds brilliant isn’t, especially pair it with the Art., it sounds magical?

Hello John. thanks very much for this detailed information. i am interested in what is the step edit function in this multi recording page. And orher question is it possible; for example i wrote a piano sound in track one. than one note is absent. So can i write it without deleting track one. So can i overdub it? i do not know if you used korg or not but there is a function owerdub and owerwrite on same channel on Korg. i will transfer myself to Genos but i have these questions without answer. if you help or take a video will be very thankfull :)

Hello Her - Great questions. Step edit is Yamaha's effort to provide a detailed midi editing feature for its users but unfortunately, they failed miserably on that front. Especially people like you who are from a Korg background, step edit is not the best thing to edit your midi. To your question on adding that missing piano note, step edit should be able to add that note, but it is not straight forward and easy. I will surely dig into it and add a video since there are NOT many videos on KZbin explaining this feature. Regarding your question on overdub, I used to own a Kronos before and absolutely understand the usefulness of "overdub". Unfortunately, the Genos does not provide overdub on individual channels (at least not that I know of). The only place the Genos provides overdub is when you Record > Audio > Multi recording. If you record once, you will see an "Overdub" button. Even though it is for Audio recording Yamaha allows you to record over and over again everything (Right 1,2,3, Left, Multipad, Accompaniment, harmony/arpeggiator). I personally don't like this overdub since there is no way to edit tracks once you overwrite (except there is one step UNDO) and it is recorded as a WAV file. I use Logic for all types of midi editing and the flexibility it provides cannot be beaten. Hope that helps!

Hey Gary - Thank you! Appreciate it. The Genos is an arranger keyboard and placed pretty high in the arranger keyboard segment. Sequencing is not it's biggest strength though it has very basic sequencing capabilities. I wouldn't buy it for sequencing. Hoped that helps.

I know I am asking all these question, and I don't even have my Genos until next month :) but can you tell me please, after recording in Midi, once you are satidfied with the way it sounds, can you then record you Midi file to Audio and transfer to a USB stick? I basically want to end up with two recordings of the same thing , one in Midi (incase I need to alter anything at some later date) and Audio (the finished product) Thank you in advance

@Kerri Powles Hi Kerri - Absolutely yes! Whatever you do on the Genos would be saved internally as a .midi file. You can export that file to your external storage. You can bounce the midi as an audio file at any point. You can even export the midi to any standard DAW of your choice, make modifications and bring it back to the Genos. The possibilities are endless. Congratulations on your Genos!
