I was going to title this one "this thing blows" but I figured youtube would flag it LOL

I've got one of those big, tall Vornado Fans made 15 years ago that had it's controller fail, blue led's and all. Of course the fan is just fine! You just short the ultra-cheap transistor to chose the speed you want. SO I just put a blob of solder to set it on max. Worked perfectly for what I needed for years. When I take it out of storage I'll add a radioshack rotary selector switch I've had lying around for ever, and it will have all of it's original features working. That thing was likely expensive, found it on the street.

Interesting. Just when you think it is functional, it starts acting faulty again. I bought a HARLEY endorsed ceiling fan several years ago. It has all the bells and Harley SOUND EFFECTS. Sound of a revving V-twin when I change speed, 3 speeds & reverse spin, and 2 bulb lamp with chrome trim embellishments . Eventually it would only respond to LOW speed. I may dis-assemble it in the near future and give it the ONCE OVER. I appreciate the testing procedure video Dave.

Yes, unusual smelling flux, could be water soluble flux - no good for surface mount ICs. If I find water soluble flux, first things I do is take the chip off the board and look for damage on the board under the chip. Then if OK, clean it all off with IPA (non-hydrous) and, assuming the chip is still good, re-solder using rosin based flux.

@UrbanistBlooms The reason I mentioned it was because I mistakenly used water soluble flux on memory ICs once. It wicked under the ICs and destroyed some tracks. I couldn't believe how destructive it was.

I find it fascinating. But I've always said "why complicate simple things except to make it more likely to fail?" On, off, and speed is all I need on something like that.

Ya think.

The resistors and multi switch would have been more reliable. ' Keep It Simple' if possible :-D

Touch sensitive controls! 😂 The nicer they make them, the dumber it is when they fail yet still work.

Hello! Do you still do service repairs for Sony handycams? I live in California but would be willing to send one over and pay for repair, etc. thank you so much

I work on certain models. The ones from the capacitor plague area are just not worth fixing. The boards are all toast.
