multi strand necklace beginner tutorial

Hello! Today I will show you how to make a multi strand necklase. We will use a mix of glass and acrylic beads to acheive high sparkle without the weight of an all glass design. I will show you how to properly attach crimp beads and go over whay we use certain supplies and tools. This is a basic bead string tutorial. No beading experience is required to do this project.
Supplies:
Acrylic beads (Urban Ice by Jessie James)
Glass Beads: Fire Mountain Gems
7 strand beading wire (BEadalon)
#1 crimp beads
tools:
3 in 1 tool (pliers/wire cutter)
Optional tools
Crimping pliers, flush cutting (diagonal) pliers, bead board

A few suggestions to beginners... First, I prefer to use a wire guard when I'm stringing beads like this. #1, it gives a stronger hold for your clasps. Also, if you are like me, and you prefer to use jump rings with your clasps, a wire guard makes it more difficult for the beading wire to slide through, and slide off. #2, If you are going to use crimp beads, I highly recommend using crimp covers with crimp beads. You do need a crimping tool to use them, but they are worth it for two reasons: 1- sometimes you can get scratched by crimp beads. Covering them with crimp covers prevents this. 2- you jewelry looks more professional with those crimp beads covered. You don't see the crimp, you see a bead. #3, if you end up beading as long as I have, crimp beads will become the bane of your existence! If you don't get the right type for the wire you are using (and even sometimes when you do!) they sometimes break when you are crimping them. If they break apart, they won't hold your wire, but taking off a broken crimp bead can cut and shred the wire you are using, which causes it to lose its integrity. Which means you have to string that strand all over again, wasting wire, and wasting the crimp beads/covers you have already used. I've decided to use Scrimps, instead. They are sold at Fire Mountain Gems, and they are fairly reasonable. It's slightly bigger than a crimp bead, and you don't have to worry about clamping down on the crimp bead wrong and possibly breaking it. Instead, these little scrimps have little screws that you screw down tightly, and it holds your wire like a crimp bead would. Best of all, they look like a bead when you are done, which gives it a professional finish. Just a few things to think about.

Nice job Lindsay. The video gave a whole new approach to thinking a piece through from beginning to end. I've done some beading, but using acrylic beads is a new idea for me. You are right! Not too many people can afford to buy a piece that is worked with sterling silver, gold, semiprecious stones and pearls. Another option for smaller pieces like bookmarks and chaplets are Chinese crystals as opposed to high end Austrian Swarovski crystals. Some of your subscribers will want to check out the resale shops run by local churches for gently worn high end costume jewelry pieces. Consignment shops in large cities can also produce good finds - be prepared to spend a little more for these items. Wealthy women dump clothes, furs, shoes, purses, and costume jewelry after one or two outings. Pearls, turquoise, jade, agate, mountain crystal, silver, and manmade crystals are there for the taking. If you see it a Neiman Marcus - you can count on seeing it in a consignment shop within the next season. There is no thrill greater than walking out with a haul that cost pennies on the dollar. Moreover, never snub the antique beads! All this is called investment shopping. Then there are antique shops. Never under estimate them. That's where I learned, as a teen, to shop and haggle like Mother and her best friend. Two summers ago in Dallas, I found a pre 1960's signed, sterling silver and rare turquoise squash blossom necklace priced at $2K, and walked out with a whopping discount. You never know what you will find. . . or how 'hungry' a seller could be for a cash sale. My 'go to source' for beading inspiration is the Rosaryworkshop dot com, and chaplets are the absolute best place for a beginning beader to jump into the beading fray. Then get inspiring designs from their wearable art pieces using antique beads. I apologize for the tome. . . I'm on a roll this evening. Forewarned is forearmed: being a bead head, shopping and writing about it are all addictive.

That's absolutely beautiful. I plan to try as soon as I have a little more work surface. Since this was a request video I hate to add another to the list.* But I came home today and found 2 pairs of gray turtle doves picking up little twigs and stuff on our property. I belive that one couple is building a nest in a 9ft tall evergreen bush in front of my house. Big surprise since we have only seen crows for the past 10 years or so, because we own cats and many neighbor cats visit. ● *It would be wonderful if you could draw a couple or one grey turtle does with the thick black stripe on the neck. I think it would be lovely in colored pencils with a decent drawing done first or just a shade sketch drawing. Although watercolors would be beautiful , I do not think it would show subtle but defined detail and beauty in the birds. Just Google to see some beautiful pictures. Once again it's the grey turtle dove with the single black stripe on its neck. If you wish to wait till Christmas I can understand why. But just seeing them has brought me joy, but if I could paint or draw them it would bring me more joy I know. Thanks if you get inspired just to put it down on your list.

Great tutorial, as usual! The wonderful thing about your videos is that I always feel like "I can do that". I do have one question. What do you suggest for jewelry findings if you have a nickel allergy? The glass and acrylic beads are a great option for me, but the clasp, and possibly the crimp beads, might be an issue for me. I rarely wear jewelry due to the allergy, but would love to.

You can buy silver or gold filled wire and findings from Fire Mountain gems, filled means it had 40 times the coating of plated jewelry so that might offer enough of a buffer but either way you can ask them what products they recommend, or go to a good bead shop ad ask, it is likely that the folks at the craft sore will not know what will make your allergy act up. An inexpensive option would be to use beading cord (and a beading needle) and string the beads that way. You can stitch a loop at the end and use a toggle bead or button for the other end. No metal on that at all!

Soooooooo the part I needed to see you skipped, after you finish the second strand how do you get it through the end (toggle, jump ring, etc) doubled over with the crimp bean on it?

+pearlsandsilverroses sorry, I like to use 2 crimp tubes, you can do this 2 ways, you can use a larger crinp tube and both strands together and go through the toggle and back trough the bead and crimp or put a crimp bead on each strand and crimp each strand like you would a single stand necklace. My camera was about to shut off so I rushed it, I am sorry. Hope this helped:)

I love multiple bead stranding. I also do a lot of bead weave but, stands help me to use up a lot of stash. I want to copy a necklace I saw in Pride and Prejudice. It was a five strand pearl necklace worn by Mrs. Bennett at the balls. The five strands were graduated in size. The issue is I'm having trouble figuring out the connector that brings the five strands together on the side of the necklace. The other side of the connector is small pearl beads on each side using a clasp on the back. Do you know of a pretty connector that would work? My only other option would be to make my own. Perplexed 😕

I would look at the multi strand bracelet findings. I I have seen them with 5 loops and they aren't too bulky. Another option would be chandelier earring drops, there are many decorative options with many loops to hook jumprings and then your wire to.

You have not done the looping properly and one should not give wire is seen in finish. You should tighten till end and jam with beads. Then it will look fine without wire is seen.

SALOME SOLOMON just make the wire 1/2-1" smaller (shorter:) I tend to adjust it when I put my clasp on but you can just start off cutting the inner strand shorter.

I know this has NOTHING to do with beads but maybe you can help me out with this. I have some digital art work and I want to make multiple prints of it to sell and ship out to people. Now I don't have the proper printer to do this so I was wondering if you knew of any places to go and get prints made? depending on what you can get price wise for your prints you could do anything from a giclee' print (best quality) to posters to color copies, just be sure you let the customer know what you are buying. Pick up an Artist's Magazine and see the ads, often there are coupons there for discounts, you can look at the bookstore and buy a mag you like:) I have use Vistaprint for my promotional items and their service is cheap and good:)

i had problems getting the right length for both layers... when i finished, the 2 layers doesn't sit flat... kind of awkward... then I had to trim down and make it into an anklet instead... sob :(

i would recommend NOT crimping the strands right away. Wait until all done then you can look at your design and see if you want to change anything, make sure they are long enough, etc.

So, super nice person, but because this is a tutorial, it’s too important not to point out that she’s not using the board properly. At all. The grey board is not a generic bead tray, it’s a design board and is particularly useful for 2-3 stranded necklaces. It even has marks on it to help line up the dual strands. It’s one thing to do things your own way, but it someone is doing a specific tutorial, then then they should address the handy board. It’s like having a bed, filling it with all your clothes, then deciding to sleep on the floor.

Each person has a different size neck and different personal preferences as far as length goes, though there are standards (i.e. 16" 18" and so on) so I don't know if exact length measurements here would be very helpful.
