Yes, bodies leak when they’re decomposing, right through the caskets. In a mausoleum, under each casket, there is a trough that tilts to the back where all of the chambers are connected to a drain pipe that empties into a septic tank; there is also a small stack pipe that draws fresh air in to keep things flowing and lessens decomposition odors. If the stack pipe isn’t maintained by pulling out leaves and debris, it plugs up and the drains won’t work at all, causing fluid to build up, which is a combo of rehydrated body liquids and condensation(there’s a LOT of condensation) and will drip out and down the front.
@bridgetbright62583 жыл бұрын
I thought once they are embalmed that decomposition stops?
@happymack66053 жыл бұрын
@@bridgetbright6258 Hi there. Embalming only slows down decomposition for a little while; just enough so they don’t smell during time before burial. The embalming fluid also is tinted so the body looks more natural after the blood is drained. Placing the body in the refrigeration unit after it’s prepared(embalming, clothing, makeup and hair) does most of the work at slowing decomposition before the wake and burial 💕

You can just opt for a green burial if you want to return to nature quicker I think green burial should be standard instead of putting people in mausoleums that eventually leak We should be allowed to bury our own dead There should be a designated place where people can do just that if they have the means to move the body as soon as you can get approval from the morgue and funeral home confirming that the person is indeed dead I think there should be an option for self-service just like in Bible days people buried their own dead Like you wash your own clothes at the laundromat, there should be something similar, a self-service funeral facility that anyone can use It would be user-friendly and you can choose green burial if that's what you want It would be much cheaper to engage the family if such a place existed They buried their own dead back in Bible days, and we need to bring that back, and make it an OPTION For those who don't have family, there should be Advocate for those specific individuals, advocates who will respect that person's wishes to the fullest Special advocates would be volunteers from the community to step up to the plate in place of the family they don't have In order to gain respect ror others, we need to pull together and learn how to participate and help out our funeral workers when possible Remember, your funeral workers do eventually go through some level of burnout sooner or later, so why not help them out when possible? They GIVE SO MUCH of THEMSELVES to US, WHY NOT GIVE BACK?

The Good Shepherd has gotten a lot of media coverage regarding its abandonment, and the dilemma of what to do with the property and the remains of loved ones who are still there. Last I'd read, there was a local funeral director who was assisting families with expenses and logistics to relocate some of the caskets. Think that the house you mentioned was an office and maintenance building, of sorts. It's gotten to be a very sad situation. Thank you for giving a recent survey of this site. Hopefully, the local authorities and community can come together and figure out a plan for its future fate. There's a duty of care for remembering and honoring humanity, here.

As a former funeral service advisor, you can do what you want, but personally I would never entomb any loved one in a mausoleum. Unless you are cremated with fire or alkaline hydrolysis there will be decay and smell. A crypt burial is very similar to a ground burial as far as the breakdown of the body. A good, maintained crypt will have drains, vents, and fans behind the scenes to reduce the smell. However, depending how the corpse drains in a crypt the body may somewhat mummify, preserving bone and skin a little longer than a ground burial. In 20 years most of the decomposition is usually done. Hope that helps.

Those fun liquids are what’s called human soup. Putrefaction occurs as part of the decomposition process, and when a body is left in a sealed casket the lack of oxygen combined with a dozen other factors causes the soft tissue to liquify. As the body decomposes, gasses build up and eventually the expanding gas will cause the tissue to rupture and explode, and eventually the gas will fill the casket and the pressure will cause the gasket to pop and the casket will leak. You don’t notice it in a ground burial and a properly maintained mausoleum with a properly maintained drainage system won’t ever show these signs either. The real problem here with moving remaining bodies is going to be the numerous biohazards the bodies present. Don’t forget that not only are we talking about human soup in ruptured caskets but whoever does the cleanup is contending with untold gallons of formalin which is heavily carcinogenic. The bodies at this point will also probably need to be cremated unless they haven’t liquified yet, though I wouldn’t put a lot of money on that being much of a possibility. At this point it’s probably better to seal the whole thing up so the formalin doesn’t seep into the ground or present an undue hazard to the living.

Funny thing is I used to work part time in a funeral home and I picked up some neat info. Most of the time if you get embalmed youve got about 2 weeks max before decomp takes place (not including things like caskets etc.) Also in mosoleums if the pressure changes due to not being sealed, heat etc and you bloat like stated above, when you pop you can actually blow the faceplate off the wall and now youre running down on to the floor in one big puddle.

That brown stuff on the carpet is moss which is formed in damp places. Since the mausoleum had so much dampness from the leaks and poor conditions, that's why it formed. The markings running down the stones of the mausoleum is simple age-related wear and tear due to being in the elements. All that being said, it is a true shame what was allowed to happen to this place. Caring about cemeteries seems to be a lost art. Okay here is my 2 cents! My dad was in the burial vault business for many years and growing up I learned just about everything about the death industry! I first would say that whom ever owns the property must figure out how to redeem this back to beauty and yes I believe it's doable. Modern mausoleums use a plastic liner under the casket to prevent embalming fluid from leaking out as noted in the video! I would begin by power washing the entire place with disinfectant to get ride of the mold. Many molds are black but not dangerous. Microscopic exam would be necessary to confirm the type of mold. Then each niche would be opened, cleaned and a liner placed under the casket [not coffin we do not use coffins in U.S.A.] and resealed. The core of the building seems OK and that would be mostly cosmetic while the wings or outside would need demo and rebuilding. Grounds mowed and cleaned with a landscaping plan for new ground interments based on a new map plan. This stuff is all doable and this place could be a real beautiful place of peace and re dedication to perpetual care. Various local agencies, and possible federal funding to supply the funds for the work to be done. Local churches from the area who do not have their own cemeteries could have dedicated areas as well ! A local volunteer plan for beautification, etc.This video is 3 years old and I will research it's now status? Food for thought!

I do genealogy research and I've found a few cemeteries that questionably reinterred bodies. One I found a few months ago did what amounted to a mass burial in a heavily wooden area BEHIND a cemetery. The cemetery, though, has lots of unused space- go figure. Thank God for the local genealogists who keep records of original and relocations.

3:27 I don’t know why I felt the need to pause here but as I saw this couple I was for one reason or another interested in who they were, Thomas Van Scoy was a WW2 veteran, Diamond Mine founder with jewelry store across the East from PA to FL, he was a boxer who of 89 fights lost only 2, an author, a avid supporter of racing having sponsored early NASCAR events, and what seems like a decent human being. So sad he rests here.

After going in there I would clean your shoes really good. That fluid was from inside those caskets. There was possibly fluid from the bodies on that floor and it's on your shoes. Edited: just like everyone has been saying in the comments. You should've put on a respirator before you went in there because it will ruin your lungs since there is a lot of mold in there.

CORRECT INFO: 1983 Westminster Memorial Garden Inc. took possession of the property. It went bankrupt. 2005 the County Government took possession & sold it to Lawrence Lee who thought it was just a house. He has no paid taxes. Normally the county would take possession but the leaders don’t want a cemetery either. So it sits in limbo.

That's what happens to public cemeteries when they fill up and the money runs out to take care of the grounds they just get abandoned as to where national cemetery is run by the government they always get taken care of

I didn’t know this until I watched an episode of Ask A Mortician but: the reason why properly kept mausoleums don’t smell as much as you’d assume is due to controlled temperature and drainage on the inside. Since this mausoleum is abandoned there’s no temp control inside and it’s been left to bake. Heat is a corpse’s worst enemy. Plus, the liquid draining out the front of the plaques occurs when there isn’t a caretaker who keeps up with the drainage side of the internal room. Mausoleum bodies still leak even though they’re embalmed. Liquid needs to be drained out of each interred casket Oh plus, have you heard of exploding caskets? 🌞

Heat is not a bodies worst enemy, it’s moisture. If it’s dry and hot or dry and cold a body will naturally mummify, moisture is what will cause bodies to rot

Thank you so much for covering this story, Lamont. It's yet another good example of why mausoleums are not a good idea for burial. There are more and more mausoleums all over the US falling into disrepair and abandonment.. because sooner or later the money for perpetual care runs out or is embezzled. Besides, buildings don't last forever. Aquamation for me! And I've told my family I will come back and haunt them if they don't respect my wishes. I will too!
