I've long been anticipating this video. I have 1 computer dedicated to gaming/mining and another for work. I've also been wanting to add my old xbox 360 to my desk to keep things tidy. This will allow me to do just that---and get a little console gaming in, without the wife knowing that I'm not really working on something important! Hehehe! Thanks, Tech!

I need one of these. My work pc and home pc are both connected to one monitor. And occasionally I’ll need to switch between them but I have to completely shut off one to access the other, and do that whole dance again to switch back. This is what I’m looking for. I’ve come across some really expensive ones but without a proper review on why those are so pricey, I want something more economical. These you’ve shown fit the bill at a fraction of the price. So glad I came across your video!

Great video and I LOVE the white background. Reminds me of 'Old School' TechDeals videos. My biggest reason for a KVM is one of my VM's is secure. Nothing else can be connected. I use a dedicated laptop. It's just an easy way to use all my VM's on one Keyboard/Mouse/Monitor. If I wanted to use my secure VM on my main PC, I have to shut everything down just to log into it. It's a waste of time. So I use a crappy old laptop to connect and a KVM for 'life enhancement'.

Not a true KVM but I just got a USB splitter for my mouse and keyboard. I have a stacked dual monitor set up where both have at least two display port and 1 HDMI. I am fine with hitting the input button on my monitors though and my ultra wide even has picture in picture option so I can run it at the same time on the same screen. (27" 1920x1080 165hz stacked over a 34" 3440x1440 75hz) Where they are set up I typically will play competitive games on the 27" for the higher refresh rate, the higher frame rate I can get on 1080p, and the 1ms response time and then have work flow tasks on the 34" but then when I want to watch movies or lean back and enjoy a cinematic single player experience I will use the 34" I just built a new gaming PC but still have the old one. I have a bunch of data that I need to pull off of the old PC and rather then pulling all of the hard drives out and then using a hard drive dock to pull data off onto the new one I figured I would just leave it all set up and pull it off a bit at a time using an external 1tb drive I got for school work several years ago. But I did not want to have to keep swapping my keyboard and mouse between the two computers. So grabbed a $30 USB switch so I can go back and forth without needing to swap cables or set up a second pair of input devices. Eventually I plan on either turning the older PC into the streaming PC and try to get back into streaming again from time to time if I dont just end up selling off the old one, but I know it is going to take me some time to get everything off it and set up to sell so the switch will let me take my time doing that but actually do it rather then put it off due to having to swap cables every time.

Is there one that you recommend that can handle 2 monitors? Ho we do I know if a KVM has the always on feature?
@danmagoo3 жыл бұрын
I've had the 2-PC version for a couple of years, and it's...OK, works about 90 per cent of the time, until randomly one of the PCs won't recognize the mouse and/or keyboard after switching. And I have 2 monitors, so I still have to mess with the switches on them -- a nice refinement would be if I could change computers for the mouse, keyboard, maybe another 2 USB devices (printer, external drive) AND 2 monitors. If there's a way to do that with the KVM hub, I haven't figured it out. But, this works better than any other set-up I've tried, to avoid having a 2- keyboard, 2-mouse clutter to go between my "home" PC and work laptop.

So my scenario is a bit different. I have my main PC I use for gaming, content creation, Etc. The monitor is 4k 120hz. Tech is right KVM awitches are ideal if you are allways tinkering with computers.We've been using one for about 5 years to switch between our work PC and the one we use for gaming or trying out new hardware. There's no risk that my latest modification on the gaming PC will interupt our work if there's a problem.

Heads-up: I bought this same KVM from the link in the video and it does the USB plug/unplug thing, which causes Windows to re-detect devices every time, the same with the monitor. Just in case you are looking for a DDM class KVM on a dime. I wish they could make that clear in the video.
@TechDeals3 жыл бұрын
Sorry to hear you've had the problem... We finally ended up with one of these that did that, however the first few we bought did not. The one I showed in the video did not, it holds a signal and doesn't cause an issue. I do feel your frustration.

I had a really expensive Emerson/Avocent DisplayPort KVM switch to connect my work/personal PC to my setup. I couldn't get 4K on my personal PC so that was a bummer and cables were a mess. I eventually replaced it with a Samsung monitor with a built in KVM switch...way less cables...better picture quality and easier to connect. Not sure why monitors with KVM switches built in aren't more common. Should be standard IMO.

Sweet I can use the same keyboard and mouse and same monitor for a Windows 10 machine a Linux machine a raspberry Pi and a console. And since my monitor has a headphone jack built in I can get sound through all the devices through the HDMI cable out to 3.5 mm Jack and into my amplifier what about putting an HDMI switch ahead of this device? Could I say plug a laptop and a console into a switch then plug the switch into the KVM and then be able to switch between devices on certain lines of that KVM. That would probably depend on the ability of the HDMI switch to let the data for the keyboard and mouse pass through. Probably going to buy one of these tomorrow

I know I should probably just set up a network base storage solution to keep all my files in one place and fetch them to the device I want to use. But that's not the point. Thanks for the video. I recently got an ultra wide monitor and wanted to switch between 2 computers with my keyboard and mouse. As my monitor had multiple inputs I opted against a kvm switch and just used an iogear switch to cycle to the other computer. I know it's an extra step to change the input on the monitor, but I'm sitting right in front so it's not a big deal to switch the input. However, I do see that in certain cases someone would want a kvm switch.

It is nice, except my old stationary computer just somewhat understands thunderbolt (e.g. it doesn't understand the monitor cable - so I also need to switch channel on the monitor - will upgrade when computer parts become cheap again). Works really nice, to switch between work laptop and old gaming computer for monitor and mouse+keyboard but my use case is a bit different from yours.

I might have to look into these KVM switches, get a couple 1.4 HDMI switch boxes for my old game consoles and a couple 2.0 HDMI switch boxes for the rest of my devices cause trying to plug in everything individually there are WAY too many cables scattered about and not enough inputs on my TVs and monitors.
