In this lesson, you will learn how to multiply fractions. We will emphasize the process of cross cancellation before doing the multiplication, which means that we will pre simplify the fractions before doing the multiplying. In this way, the answer is fully simplified and we don't have to work with very large numbers after doing the multiplication. It is also important to know how to multiply in this way for algebra in the coming lessons.

The visual helps a lot, and I like that you called it "pre-simplifying."

This is FAR BETTER than SCHOOL. Only on KZbin. Why go to school, when you can KZbin it instead? I'm in my fifties and I'm always watching math things, that I roughly know or want to know. Other than that, I'm not an astronaut lol. But I do love computer programming and this helps see numbers much differently, as the more I relearn and refresh my basic math skills. I'm so glad I achieved my G 12 Diploma at the age of 32. I don't regret it at all. Not at all. -:)))

I was taught to think about the Magic '1', that you always have to imagine dropping either at the bottom: Denominator or the top number, if the fractions are flipped upside down. However, you showed me how to CANCEL OUT numbers that go evenly into the crossed numbers either to the left or right. Does this work with the other side, if you cancel as long as the smaller number fits evenly into the bigger number. Then again, I'm still watching this video, but I"m catching on. WOW!

So when you multiply a fraction it’s really taking away
@MathAndScience

Yes! And if the fraction you multiply is greater that 1 whole such as 5/4, then you are multiplying by something larger than one, and so the result is that the answer that you get will be larger than the original fraction.

@@MathAndScience Thank you - so under 1 whole is a minus and greater than 1 whole is a plus with these fractions?
