The mustard factory has 20,000 ounces of mustard to put into small packets. If each packet holds 1/4 ounce, how many oackets can be filled? My instincts tell me that this is a division problem, but multiypling is what gives me a believable answer. Can you explain whether I have to multiply or divide? And explain why? Thanks.

Great question! Do 20,000 divided by 1/4 because you are splitting the 20,000 ounces into groups of 1/4 ounce. Your answer is going to be greater than 20,000. It may seem odd that you are getting a larger answer in value than what you started with, but it is because you are dividing by something less than 1 whole. Think of it like this… if you have 1 ounce and you are dividing that 1 ounce into 1/4 ounce packets, you actually end up with 4 packets. The 20,000 ounces is just that same problem on a bigger scale.
